Pattern Adaptive and Finger Image-guided Keypad Interface for In-vehicle Information Systems

Abstrakt

Abstract

In this paper we propose a pattern adaptive keypad interface for in-vehicle information system. The keypad interface recommends the estimated input sequence to fit the user’s preference based on individual model of operation pattern. Pattern (shape) of button switches corresponding to the estimated input sequence is actively reformed. Button switches are displayed tactilely and visually. Finger image is shown on the monitor in real-time in order to guide input operation on the tactile input device. To confirm the effect of the keypad interface, experiments are performed comparing with a touch screen on which pattern (shape) of buttons switch is unchanged.

An Embedded Wireless System For Estimating The Exposition Risk In First Emergency Management

Abstrakt

Abstract

In this paper we propose the design of a wearable embedded system1 for wirelessly delimiting an hazardous area during emergency, alerting the rescue operators when entering in it and measuring the consequent exposition time. (The dangerous area is previously identified, e.g., through suitable instrumentation). The suggested approach, which is identically effective in indoor and outdoor environments, significantly extends existing solutions by not requiring any absolute position information for delimiting the hazardous area or fixed infrastructure as requested instead by GPS and UWB solutions. The proposed low-power system can be easily retrieved after use and ready to be deployed in a new environment.

CO2 sensing characteristics of Sm1-xBaxCoO3 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2) nanostructured thick film

Abstrakt

Abstract

SmCoO3 gas sensor has been developed with high sensitivity for CO2 gas by doping Ba. Nanostructured SmCoO3 and Sm1-xBaxCoO3 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2) were obtained by EDTA-Glycol method. The operation temperature falls and sensitivity increases from 425 to 370°C when Ba concentration in SmCoO3 changes from x = 0 to x = 0.1. Ag impregnation over Sm0.9Ba0.1CoO3 sensor, on exposure to CO2 at about 360°C showed an increased sensitivity as well as the response time also decreases. The possible CO2 sensing mechanism is proposed on the basis of available literatures.

Abstract

The testing of various carrier materials for circuit paths on the basis of tracking indices determination is of particular interest for many modern sensing technologies, especially for technologies based on capacitive methods, as well as for the protection of circuitries by means of sealing in insulator material. This paper discusses observations for the determination of the tracking indices for elastic insulators according to the DIN standard EN 60112. The appearance of burn-in patterns on the insulator surface and the peculiar decrease of current peak amplitudes with increasing number of electrolyte droplets are investigated and possible causes are discussed, based on Finite Element Analysis and camera images of conducted experiments

High Performance Macroporous Silicon Chemical Sensor With Improved Phase Detection Electronics

Abstrakt

Abstract

In this paper, a high sensitive, stable and reproducible electrical chemical sensor system based on macroporous silicon has been developed. Screen printed metal contacts have been taken from macroporous silicon layer which result in extremely stable, quasi ohmic and reproducible contacts. Such a sensor structure has been characterized for different organic and ionic solutions commonly used for biochemical applications. The sensitivity of the reported sensor at a particular frequency has been found to be almost ten times compared to previous reports of macroporous silicon sensor where contacts are taken from the backside and also in comparison to interdigited electrode array structure. The improvement and variation of sensitivity with frequency for different solutions has been explained taking into account the dependence of double layer impedance with frequency, distributed RC networks of the macroporous silicon structure, ionic conductivity of the solution and effects of ion sizes. However, from the impedance measurement it has been observed that the sensor capacitance with such stable contacts has an ultra low-Q value and to exploit such sensor for portable field use systems, an embedded signal conditioning unit has been realized to display the measured capacitance value after offset compensation and reduction of parasitic effects.

PV Maximum Power Point Tracking Through Pyranometric Sensor: Modelling and Characterization

Abstract

Solar trackers represent apparatuses that may significantly improve electric power production of photovoltaic panels. For detecting solar position, the trackers use different sensors (e.g. photoresistor, photodiode receiver, phototransistor, etc..). This research proposes an alternative way, the use of the sensor par excellence for retrieving solar radiation; the pyranometer. A design and tests have been performed in order to show the improvements. A comparison has been made between this alternative mounted on a solar follower plant and another tracking system called S.A.I.S. which does not use any solar position sensor but tracks the panel by solar position calculations, from the ad hoc knowledge of longitude, latitude, date and hour. A second comparison has been also made between the above pyranometer architecture and a specifically designed solarimeter

Abstract

This paper presents a novel, agent-based sensing-system reconfiguration methodology for the recognition of time-varying-geometry targets (objects or subjects). A multi-camera activevision system is used to improve form-recognition performance by selecting near-optimal viewpoints along a prediction time horizon. The proposed method seeks to maximize the target visibility in a cluttered, dynamic environment. Simulated experiments clearly show a tangible potential performance gain.

Cooperative Multi Target Tracking Using Multi Sensor Network

Abstract

Sensors provide a key feedback link allowing robotic and autonomous systems to react to their environments. Without this feedback, robotic and autonomous systems will operate in an uncontrolled manner, since they don’t have the ability to perceive and respond to their environments. The limited capabilities of static sensors especially in complex applications and environments force the use of multiple sensors operating dynamically. This paper addresses the development of multiple objects tracking system using multiple mobile sensors. For the purposes of surveillance and security, trackers use an Extended Kohonen neural network to track the moving targets in their environments. The proposed tracking algorithm can be used for single and multiple target tracking. A clustering algorithm is used in order to minimize the number of active trackers over time and hence save energy. An auction based algorithm is used for the purpose of optimizing the cooperation between trackers. Quantitative and qualitative comparisons with other recent multi target tracking approaches show that our proposed tracking algorithm can provide a good coverage, and a better energy saving.

Humanitarian Demining Robot Gryphon – Current Status And An Objective Evaluation –

Abstract

Mechanical systems or robots to assist landmine detection are expected to greatly improve quality of humanitarian demining tasks. These new systems could provide: i) safer operation; ii) advanced methods for automatic target recognition and discrimination; iii) consistent performance with less influence of “human-factors”; iv) better detection performance, i.e., higher probability of detection (POD) and lower false alarm rate (FAR); among others. However, despite many research/development efforts around the world, no practical landmine detection robot has yet achieved maturity for practical use. Nonetheless, the humanitarian demining robot Gryphon, which current status of development is described in detail, is close to meet the requirements for practical use. This paper analyses the results from latest on-site tests underwent by Gryphon in Croatia (2006, 2007) and Cambodia (2006), to make a critical and objective evaluation of its validity, and clarify the points that still require further development in order to realize a practical humanitarian demining robot

Railway Wheelset Parameter Estimation Using Signals From Lateral Velocity Sensor

Abstract

A type of parameter estimation technique based on the linear integral filter (LIF) method, the least-absolute error with variable forgetting factor (LAE+VFF) estimation method, is proposed in this paper to estimate the railway wheelset parameters modelled as a time-varying continuous-time (C-T) system. The inputs to the parameter estimator are the control signal and the railway wheelset system output, which is the wheelset’s lateral velocity. The algorithm includes an instrumental variable (IV) element to reduce estimation bias and a variable forgetting factor for good parameter tracking and smooth steady state. Simulation results have shown that the LAE with fixed forgetting factor gives better parameter estimates compared to the recursive least-squares error (RLSE) method, whereas the LAE+VFF offers even better estimation and tracking of system parameters that are subject to abrupt changes, provided that the fs and lf values are chosen accordingly. It has also been proven that the estimation error of the proposed LAE+VFF estimation algorithm is bounded.

Hydrogen Gas Sensing Performance Of Pt/Sno2 Nanowires/Sic Mos Devices

Abstract

This paper presents material and gas sensing properties of Pt/SnO2 nanowires/SiC metal oxide semiconductor devices towards hydrogen. The SnO2 nanowires were deposited onto the SiC substrates by vapor-liquid-solid growth mechanism. The material properties of the sensors were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The current-voltage characteristics have been analyzed. The effective change in the barrier height for 1% hydrogen was found to be 142.91 meV. The dynamic response of the sensors towards hydrogen at different temperatures has also been studied. At 530°C, voltage shift of 310 mV for 1% hydrogen was observed

Leak Rate And Location Analysis Through Slits And Cracks In Pipes By Nano Porous CeramiC Humidity Sensors

Abstract

Nano porous sol gel thin film humidity sensor was studied using commercially available reference humidity sensor from Honeywell Corporation. The main advantages of our developed set up for humidity measurements is low cost and high resolution yielding a full set of information on the variation of humidity at 250°C. Humidity is considered to be one of the most effective indicators of the leakage. On this ground we developed nano porous sensor which can be used for LBB (Leak before break) application. The ceramic sensors, based on sol gel thin film are shown to increase its capacitance upon water adsorption over the temperature range upto 250°C. The variation of capacity to voltage is shown to provide useful information on both break rate and location. The sensor installation spacing on the outer surface of the piping is determined as a function of the detection sensitivity. In this paper we have summarize the results of the development and characterization of ceramic humidity sensor for leak rate and location analysis by a microcontroller device

The study is focused on the analysis of the diffusing-wave-spectroscopy signal recorded in-vivo on the ocular fundus of a rabbit eye. The motion of the scattered sites was measured as a function of the pressure exerted by a Goldmann contact lens and during the moderate temperature increase induced by a therapeutic laser diode. Temporal fluctuations of the signal revel motion of molecules and thus changes in tissues temperature and chorioretinal blood velocity. Experimental results show the ability of the system to detect motion of the scattering sites in the ocular fundus layers during variations of the ocular pressure and laser heating

Determining The Step-Change Conductivity Profiles Within Layered Metal Structures Using Inductance Spectroscopy

Abstract

This paper presents an inverse method for determining the conductivity distribution of a flat, layered conductor using a multi-frequency electromagnetic sensor based on phase signature alone. Eddy current sensors are used in a wide range of non-destructive testing (NDT) applications. Single frequency sensors are very common, however, the potential of an eddy current sensor with spectroscopic techniques offer the ability to extract depth profiles and examine more fully the internal structure of the test piece. In this paper, we found a simplified model that can estimate the phase signature of a cylindrical coil above a conductor with an arbitrary conductivity profile. This simplified model improves the computational efficiency by many fold compared to the complete analytic solution. For inverse solution, a simplex search method was used to fit a set of multi-frequency phase values in a least-squared sense. Experimental eddy-current tests are performed by taking the difference in inductance of the coil when placed in free space and next to a layered conductor over the range 100Hz -1MHz. Good estimates for the conductivity profile from experimental and simulated data were obtained

A multi-camera activevision system is used to improve form-recognition performance by selecting near-optimal viewpoints along a prediction time horizon. The proposed method seeks to maximize the target visibility in a cluttered, dynamic environment. Simulated experiments clearly show a tangible potential performance gain.

Cooperative Multi Target Tracking Using Multi Sensor Network

Abstract

Sensors provide a key feedback link allowing robotic and autonomous systems to react to their environments. Without this feedback, robotic and autonomous systems will operate in an uncontrolled manner, since they don’t have the ability to perceive and respond to their environments. The limited capabilities of static sensors especially in complex applications and environments force the use of multiple sensors operating dynamically. This paper addresses the development of multiple objects tracking system using multiple mobile sensors. For the purposes of surveillance and security, trackers use an Extended Kohonen neural network to track the moving targets in their environments. The proposed tracking algorithm can be used for single and multiple target tracking. A clustering algorithm is used in order to minimize the number of active trackers over time and hence save energy. An auction based algorithm is used for the purpose of optimizing the cooperation between trackers. Quantitative and qualitative comparisons with other recent multi target tracking approaches show that our proposed tracking algorithm can provide a good coverage, and a better energy saving.

Humanitarian Demining Robot Gryphon – Current Status And An Objective Evaluation –

Abstract

Mechanical systems or robots to assist landmine detection are expected to greatly improve quality of humanitarian demining tasks. These new systems could provide: i) safer operation; ii) advanced methods for automatic target recognition and discrimination; iii) consistent performance with less influence of “human-factors”; iv) better detection performance, i.e., higher probability of detection (POD) and lower false alarm rate (FAR); among others. However, despite many research/development efforts around the world, no practical landmine detection robot has yet achieved maturity for practical use. Nonetheless, the humanitarian demining robot Gryphon, which current status of development is described in detail, is close to meet the requirements for practical use. This paper analyses the results from latest on-site tests underwent by Gryphon in Croatia (2006, 2007) and Cambodia (2006), to make a critical and objective evaluation of its validity, and clarify the points that still require further development in order to realize a practical humanitarian demining robot

Railway Wheelset Parameter Estimation Using Signals From Lateral Velocity Sensor

Abstract

A type of parameter estimation technique based on the linear integral filter (LIF) method, the least-absolute error with variable forgetting factor (LAE+VFF) estimation method, is proposed in this paper to estimate the railway wheelset parameters modelled as a time-varying continuous-time (C-T) system. The inputs to the parameter estimator are the control signal and the railway wheelset system output, which is the wheelset’s lateral velocity. The algorithm includes an instrumental variable (IV) element to reduce estimation bias and a variable forgetting factor for good parameter tracking and smooth steady state. Simulation results have shown that the LAE with fixed forgetting factor gives better parameter estimates compared to the recursive least-squares error (RLSE) method, whereas the LAE+VFF offers even better estimation and tracking of system parameters that are subject to abrupt changes, provided that the fs and lf values are chosen accordingly. It has also been proven that the estimation error of the proposed LAE+VFF estimation algorithm is bounded.

Hydrogen Gas Sensing Performance Of Pt/Sno2 Nanowires/Sic Mos Devices

Abstract

This paper presents material and gas sensing properties of Pt/SnO2 nanowires/SiC metal oxide semiconductor devices towards hydrogen. The SnO2 nanowires were deposited onto the SiC substrates by vapor-liquid-solid growth mechanism. The material properties of the sensors were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The current-voltage characteristics have been analyzed. The effective change in the barrier height for 1% hydrogen was found to be 142.91 meV. The dynamic response of the sensors towards hydrogen at different temperatures has also been studied. At 530°C, voltage shift of 310 mV for 1% hydrogen was observed

Abstract

Nano porous sol gel thin film humidity sensor was studied using commercially available reference humidity sensor from Honeywell Corporation. The main advantages of our developed set up for humidity measurements is low cost and high resolution yielding a full set of information on the variation of humidity at 250°C. Humidity is considered to be one of the most effective indicators of the leakage. On this ground we developed nano porous sensor which can be used for LBB (Leak before break) application. The ceramic sensors, based on sol gel thin film are shown to increase its capacitance upon water adsorption over the temperature range upto 250°C. The variation of capacity to voltage is shown to provide useful information on both break rate and location. The sensor installation spacing on the outer surface of the piping is determined as a function of the detection sensitivity. In this paper we have summarize the results of the development and characterization of ceramic humidity sensor for leak rate and location analysis by a microcontroller device

The study is focused on the analysis of the diffusing-wave-spectroscopy signal recorded in-vivo on the ocular fundus of a rabbit eye. The motion of the scattered sites was measured as a function of the pressure exerted by a Goldmann contact lens and during the moderate temperature increase induced by a therapeutic laser diode. Temporal fluctuations of the signal revel motion of molecules and thus changes in tissues temperature and chorioretinal blood velocity. Experimental results show the ability of the system to detect motion of the scattering sites in the ocular fundus layers during variations of the ocular pressure and laser heating

Determining The Step-Change Conductivity Profiles Within Layered Metal Structures Using Inductance Spectroscopy

Abstract

This paper presents an inverse method for determining the conductivity distribution of a flat, layered conductor using a multi-frequency electromagnetic sensor based on phase signature alone. Eddy current sensors are used in a wide range of non-destructive testing (NDT) applications. Single frequency sensors are very common, however, the potential of an eddy current sensor with spectroscopic techniques offer the ability to extract depth profiles and examine more fully the internal structure of the test piece. In this paper, we found a simplified model that can estimate the phase signature of a cylindrical coil above a conductor with an arbitrary conductivity profile. This simplified model improves the computational efficiency by many fold compared to the complete analytic solution. For inverse solution, a simplex search method was used to fit a set of multi-frequency phase values in a least-squared sense. Experimental eddy-current tests are performed by taking the difference in inductance of the coil when placed in free space and next to a layered conductor over the range 100Hz -1MHz. Good estimates for the conductivity profile from experimental and simulated data were obtained
