TECHNIQUES IN ADVANCING THE CAPABILITIES OF VARIOUS NITRATE DETECTION METHODS: A REVIEW

Abstrakt

Abstract

Strategies to facilitate detection enhancement in various methods of nitrate detection are presented in this paper. The main nitrate detection methods for the past 10 years will be reviewed according to their advantages and disadvantages, followed by a focus on the techniques on increasing detection capabilities. For each detection method, an investigation of the technique of improvement is carried out. The utilisation of advance material such as membranes, reduction agents etc. is also identified as the key aspect for system improvement. Many researchers in the field of potentiometry, electrochemical, and biosensors have focused on miniaturising their detection systems to enhance the capability of nitrate in-situ measurement. The performance of miniaturised sensor systems is comparable to that of conventional systems.

Abstrakt

Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an expression, sometimes abused by companies given the absence of an unambiguous meaning, that indicates the upcoming evolution of Internet as it has been known so far. In fact, all objects will have network capabilities which will be exploited to overcome, in certain situations, human intervention. Thanks to the direct cooperation of new class of devices, aware of their operating scenario and interconnected in subnetworks, our life style will be strongly enhanced and simplified. IoT, however, is not yet the “El Dorado” of technology, capable of revolutionizing everyday life: some aspects and open issues have to be carefully analyzed. The huge complexity of this new technology forces companies to select a specific research field: for this reason, they focus only on some features that an IoT device should have to guarantee fulfillment of requirements. In this context, this research work concerns an analysis of features, operation principle and limits of SPI and I2C communication protocols followed by the proposal of a new hybrid protocol suited for embedded systems, named FlexSPI, thought as an evolution of the classic SPI. Thanks to a robust software architecture, it is able to provide many features that can be used by smart objects to enhance their capabilities. In this way, sensors and actuators or, more in general, subsystems, can quickly exchange data and efficiently react to malfunctioning; moreover, number of devices on bus can be safely increased even while smart object is performing operations.

EDA-BASED ESTIMATION OF VISUAL ATTENTION BY OBSERVATION OF EYE BLINK FREQUENCY

Abstrakt

Abstract

This paper describes the relationship between visual attention and eye blink frequency. In an experiment, we prompted the activation of a subject’s visual attention and examined the influence of visual attention (as measured using electrodermal activity (EDA), which is meaningfully correlated with visual attention) on the subject’s eye blink frequency. Experimental results show that engagement of visual attention decreased eye blink frequency and that when visual attention was not activated, eye blink frequency increased. Knowledge of this relationship provides a technique using EDA to objectively determining a subject’s visual attention status.

APPLICATION OF RADIAL BASIS FUNCTION NEURAL NETWORK TO PREDICT EXCHANGE RATE WITH FINANCIAL TIME SERIES

Abstrakt

Abstract

The literature indicates that exchange rates are largely unforecastable from the fact that the overwhelming majority of studies have employed linear models in forecasting exchange rates. In this paper, we applied Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN) to predict exchange rate, motived by the fact that RBFNN have the ability to implicitly detect complex nonlinear relationships between dependent and independent variables as it “learns” the relationship inherent in the exchange rate data presented to it. The model learning algorithm uses a diverse data set for training so as to adapt itself quickly for new exchange rate data. We apply the RBFNN to panel data of the exchange rates (USD/EUR, JPN/USD, USD/GBP, USD/CHY) are examined and optimized to be used for time-series predictions, some experiments testified the proposed method is effective and feasible.

EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON MULTI-OPERAND ADDERS

Abstrakt

Abstract

In this paper, different multi-operand adders have been analyzed in terms of propagation delay, power consumption and resource utilization. The functionality of the adders have been verified using Verilog hardware description language and synthesized in Xilinx ISE. The device chosen for implementation is Virtex 6 (XC6VLX240T) with FF1156 package. Simulation results show that Wallace tree adder is the fastest adder and consumes least amount of power. The Wallace tree adder also consumes the least amount of hardware resources as per the synthesis results.

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF 3D PRINTED MYOELECTRIC ROBOTIC EXOSKELETON FOR HAND REHABILITATION

Abstrakt

Abstract

The development of dynamic rehabilitation devices can be evaluated as a research fastgrowing field. Indeed, robot-assisted therapy is an advanced new technology mainly in stroke rehabilitation. Although patients benefit from this enormous development of technology, including the presence of rehabilitation robots, the therapeutic field still suffering a lack in hand robotic rehabilitation devices. In this context, this work proposes a new design of a 3D printed hand exoskeleton for the stroke rehabilitation. Based on the EMG signals measured from the muscles responsible for the hand motion, the designed mechatronic system detects the intention of hand opening or hand closing from the stroked subject. Based on an embedded controller and five servomotors, the low cost robotic system is able to drive in real time three degrees of freedom (DOFs) for each finger. The real tests with stroked subjects showed that the designed hand exoskeleton architecture has a positive effect on the motion finger range and mainly in the hand ability to perform some simple tasks. The case studies showed a good recovery of the motor functions and consequently the developed system efficiency.

OUTPUT BASED INPUT SHAPING FOR OPTIMAL CONTROL OF SINGLE LINK FLEXIBLE MANIPULATOR

Abstrakt

Abstract

Endpoint residual vibrations and oscillations due to flexible and rigid body motions are big challenges in control of single link flexible manipulators, it makes positioning of payload difficult especially when using various payloads. This paper present output based input shaping with two different control algorithms for optimal control of single link flexible manipulators. Output based filter (OBF) is designed using the signal output of the system and then incorporated with both linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and PID separately for position and residual vibration control. The Robustness of these control algorithms are tested by changing the payloads from 0g to30g, 50g and 70g in each case. Based on MATLAB simulation results and time response analysis, LQR-OBF outperformed the PID-OBF in both tracking and vibration reduction.

Watermarking is an advanced technology that identifies to solve the problem of illegal manipulation and distribution of digital data. It is the art of hiding the copyright information into host such that the embedded data is imperceptible. The covers in the forms of digital multimedia object, namely image, audio and video. The extensive literature collected related to the performance improvement of video watermarking techniques is critically reviewed and presented in this paper. Also, comprehensive review of the literature on the evolution of various video watermarking techniques to achieve robustness and to maintain the quality of watermarked video sequences.

SMART SENSING SYSTEM FOR ENHANCEING THE RELIABILITY OF POWER ELECTRONIC DEVICES USED IN WIND TURBINES

Abstrakt

Abstract

Reliability of modern power systems, in particular those use wind and solar energies, is affected by the relatively short lifetime of the associated power electronic converters (PECs). Thermal stress has been identified as one of the commonest causes for failures in PECs. However, existing thermal monitoring systems are expensive, bulky and with no intelligent capabilities, which limit their full acceptance as monitoring and control tools in operational power plants. This work presents autonomous and inexpensive microcontroller-based system for monitoring and predicting thermal behaviour of switching devices used in PECs. System’s inputs are non-intrusively measured voltages and currents drawn by those devices while in operation. The developed system also determines lifetime consumption and has the ability to communicate with external monitoring and control systems e.g. supervisory, control and data acquisition (SCADA) platforms. The performance of the developed system was critically assessed and compared with high-resolution thermal imaging camera. Good agreement between both systems was achieved and the inexpensive developed system was found to have an accuracy of 95%.

TRACKING AND AUTOMATING A LIBRARY SYSTEM USING RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION TECHNOLOGY

Abstrakt

Abstract

This paper discusses implementing a Location-Aware Library RFID service employing Radio Frequency Identification as a communication technology. Automating a library system with passive RFID tag infrastructure is proven to be feasible, and can be achieved with even distribution of RFID Antennas, well designed RFID network, an appropriate middleware, and a library application with an accurate error function that minimizes the error in the detected location to an acceptable distance, for instance, 35 cm. The paper first discusses the effect of using RFID on the upper application and System layers. A simulation of randomly distributed tags with spatially distributed antennas is shown. Simulation results are provided to prove the validity of the proposed approach, which proves that adding a localization feature to the system layer is feasible with an acceptable error range that does not exceed 1.1%.

Abstract

Two controllers are proposed in this paper. These controllers have been designed and implemented on the rectifier and quasi impedance-source inverter (QZSI) in the wind energy conversion system based on permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Model based predictive control strategy (MBPC) has been used at the proposed design for both controllers. Control of parameters such as load current, inductor current and capacitor voltage are the major aim of design of predictive controllers; hence; two cost function (CF) are employed to realize this subject which in those exist objective controls. The MATLAB-simulation and experimental results show that the predictive controllers can be robust and effective in controlling the desired parameters.

However, existing thermal monitoring systems are expensive, bulky and with no intelligent capabilities, which limit their full acceptance as monitoring and control tools in operational power plants. This work presents autonomous and inexpensive microcontroller-based system for monitoring and predicting thermal behaviour of switching devices used in PECs. System’s inputs are non-intrusively measured voltages and currents drawn by those devices while in operation. The developed system also determines lifetime consumption and has the ability to communicate with external monitoring and control systems e.g. supervisory, control and data acquisition (SCADA) platforms. The performance of the developed system was critically assessed and compared with high-resolution thermal imaging camera. Good agreement between both systems was achieved and the inexpensive developed system was found to have an accuracy of 95%.

Abstrakt

Abstract

This paper discusses implementing a Location-Aware Library RFID service employing Radio Frequency Identification as a communication technology. Automating a library system with passive RFID tag infrastructure is proven to be feasible, and can be achieved with even distribution of RFID Antennas, well designed RFID network, an appropriate middleware, and a library application with an accurate error function that minimizes the error in the detected location to an acceptable distance, for instance, 35 cm. The paper first discusses the effect of using RFID on the upper application and System layers. A simulation of randomly distributed tags with spatially distributed antennas is shown. Simulation results are provided to prove the validity of the proposed approach, which proves that adding a localization feature to the system layer is feasible with an acceptable error range that does not exceed 1.1%.

Abstrakt

Abstract

Two controllers are proposed in this paper. These controllers have been designed and implemented on the rectifier and quasi impedance-source inverter (QZSI) in the wind energy conversion system based on permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Model based predictive control strategy (MBPC) has been used at the proposed design for both controllers. Control of parameters such as load current, inductor current and capacitor voltage are the major aim of design of predictive controllers; hence; two cost function (CF) are employed to realize this subject which in those exist objective controls. The MATLAB-simulation and experimental results show that the predictive controllers can be robust and effective in controlling the desired parameters.
