Regional specialization and geographic concentration: experiences from Slovak industry

Pubblicato online: 08 Nov 2016
Pagine: 5 - 13

Astratto

Abstract

This paper attempts to indicate changes in industry during the period of economic restructuring and European integration in Slovakia in the regional and sectoral contexts. The concepts of geographic concentration and regional specialization are used in order to achieve the envisaged aims. Based on the relationship between the change in the specialization index and the change in the number of companies in three size categories, the main aim is to show the strategies used in the transformation of the regional industrial structure. It is expected that the largest category of industrial companies, those with 250 or more employees, will be a significant factor in explaining the changes in regional specialization. The main output will be a graphic model of transformation strategies and the identification of regional industrial types.

Comparison of factors influencing the Internationalisation Process in France and Poland

Pubblicato online: 08 Nov 2016
Pagine: 14 - 18

Astratto

Abstract

The aim of this article is to reveal crucial factors (political, administrative and financial) that influence the attitudes of local governments in the internationalisation process. The paper’s conclusions are based on a study referring to various types of analyses, both quantitative and qualitative, of official documents, databases as well as in-depth interviews. The study was conducted in Lublin, Poland and Nancy in France.

The research shows that the local governments’ attitudes towards international cooperation depend greatly on political factors. In both cases (Lublin and Nancy), despite the differences in political and administrative systems; the nature, activity and range of the existing cooperation is governed much more by the mayor’s ability, his/her individual attitude and approach than by the city’s councillors.

The application of a modified Monte Carlo method in the simulation of settlement pattern’s spatial development in the example of Mstów (Śląskie voivodship, Poland)

Pubblicato online: 08 Nov 2016
Pagine: 19 - 31

Astratto

Abstract

The first aim of the article is to propose the simulation of the settlement patterns development as an element of spatial planning methodology. In order to conduct such a simulation, a modified Monte Carlo method can be used. It approximates the spatial distribution of a studied phenomenon based on numerical calculations and implemented variables. Referring to previous works in which the method was applied, the author tested it on the village of Mstów. It was assumed that this method could highlight land features that are unreachable using traditional approaches in complex systems analyses.

The second aim was to investigate some of the determinants of contemporary spatial development. The conducted simulation demonstrated features of Mstów settlement pattern and proved determinants in its future development, including: the existence of areas especially predisposed for building, the decreasing number of new buildings being built, the decreasing importance of factors that were relevant in the past, and a significant relevance of the human factor. It was also proven that land development may occur on areas less predisposed to building.

IPO in the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council

Pubblicato online: 08 Nov 2016
Pagine: 32 - 36

Astratto

Abstract

The Arab States of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) host one of the fastest developing, yet one of the most closed groups of securities markets in the EMEA region. This study provides an analysis of the regional securities market and compares it with global securities’ market trends for the period 2000 to 2014. The study refers to regional IPO activity as a reflection of the level of maturity of the local economy. An IPO Market Ratio is introduced in this study as an instrument for measuring the national economy so as to be able to further compare it to other economies. The study provides descriptions of the financial markets of all GCC economies, outlines their developmental history, and develops a ranking of GCC countries based upon weighted normalized IPO Market Ratio data. The collected information and the results of the analysis are presented both in table and graphical formats.

Local Tax Competition in Poland?

Pubblicato online: 08 Nov 2016
Pagine: 37 - 43

Astratto

Abstract

The concept of tax competition has been successfully applied in an analysis conducted in several European countries, but so far it has not been systematically tested either in Poland or in other countries of Central and Eastern Europe. There are two types of competition discussed in the article: classic competition for mobile tax base and ‘yardstick competition’, in which local politicians compete for political capital being related to the comparison of tax rates with neighbouring municipalities. It is expected that in Poland the ‘yardstick competition’ is more important from the classic competition for the mobile tax base.
