Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies in Urban Parks as a Basis for Their Sustainable Management

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 21 - 32

Astratto

Abstract

The goal of this paper is to present interdisciplinary environmental studies in urban park. Simple measures are proposed here for evaluating the status of vegetation and its habitat. When systematically applied, these measures could be a basis for sustainable management of the park greenery. Studies performed in Skaryszewski Park in Warsaw are as an example. Studies confirmed the assumption that simple and relatively cheap field and laboratory methods could be a good basis for recognising the status of plant habitats in parks.

Functioning of Hydrogenic Landscapes the Upper Włodawka River Catchment Basin

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 33 - 49

Astratto

Abstract

In the dissertation, I analysed two aspects of the Polesie Lubelskie landscape. The first is the historical aspect – changes in the landscape in the 19th and 20th centuries. In evaluating such changes I relied on the existing maps and relevant literature. The second aspect is the contemporary functioning of the hydrogenic landscape, changes over the course of the year or seasonal changes. This is to allow an assessment of contemporary changes in the environment.

The fieldwork focuses on three components or three factors of the environment: water, soil and vegetation. The water factor is analysed by measuring oscillation of the ground water table as well as the chemical content of river and ground waters. The soil component is examined to determine distribution of various soil types in the study area. Vegetation is analysed by spatial distribution of floral assemblages. I am researching chemical features such as the levels of Ca, HCO3, Mg, N, P K, Fe, S, Cl, Si and pH.

Geographical Research of the 30th Polish Antarctic Expedition at Arctowski Polish Station (King George Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica)

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 51 - 56

Astratto

Abstract

This paper presents the scope of geographical research conducted at Arctowski Station during the 30th Polish Antarctic Expedition. The research included meteorological, climatological, geomorphological and glaciological issues. During the expedition, research was conducted on sandur sediments on the outwash plain of Sphinx Glacier, the size of the aeolian transport, intensity of periglacial phenomena, and the way in which environmental conditions are recorded on quartz grains collected on the Admiralty Bay beaches. Detailed measurements of the basic meteorological components were made, geomorphological maps of the outwash plains of Sphinx, Baranowski, and Windy Glaciers were also completed.

Cyclic Changes of Climate in Europe During the Last Millenium According to Dendrological Data

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 57 - 66

Astratto

Abstract

The paper discusses periodic climate changes in Europe determined on the basis of dendrochronological data dating back one thousand years. In tree-ring width sequences of trees growing in Poland there are approximately 8-, 11-, 100- and 180- year periods. The tree-ring widths of oaks growing in Poland for the last centuries are characterised, without any significant amplitude, by 8- and 11-year periods (Tab. 1). In turn, chronologies of pine, spruce, larch, oak and fir growing in Europe are characterised by 100- and 180-year periods (Tab. 2). Cycles of dendrochronological variables approximate cycles of air temperature and North Atlantic Oscillation NAO as well as those of solar activity. The forecast of annual growth (ring width) for 2001-2100 was calculated by interference of the tree-ring width cycles determined by the sinusoidal regression method. Because of much longer empirical sequences of specific periods, the credibility of forecasts for tree-ring widths is greater than that for air temperature.

Storms in Europe (1994–2005) – Their Relationship with Continentality of Climate

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 67 - 75

Astratto

Abstract

The objective of the paper is to determine the influence of continentality of Europe’s climate, increasing to the east, on the number of days with thunderstorms during the years 1994–2005 in ten chosen European cities.

In Europe, days with thunderstorms come from cities located in zones from the west to the east, beginning from Dublin, through London, Paris, Munich, Prague, Minsk, Kiev, Kharkov and up to Moscow. The well matched stations show the gradually increasing continentality of Europe’s climate.

From an analysis of the number of days with thunderstorms, the Gorczyński continentality index and the long-term mean annual amplitude of air temperature it may be concluded that, in as much as the values of the amplitude and index increase with distance from the ocean, it is not always so with the number of days with thunderstorms. Despite greater climate continentality, Minsk, Kiev and Moscow have much fewer storm days than Warsaw or Prague.

Tendencies in Climate Changes in Poland and Ukraine During the Last Centuries and Their Causes

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 77 - 88

Astratto

Abstract

The paper describes tendencies in changes of air temperature in Poland and Ukraine on the basis of a long series of measurements made in Warsaw (1779–2000), Cracow (1826–2000), Lviv (1824–2002) and Kiev (1812–2002). Air temperature in these cities in the years 1825–2002 is positively correlated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) Index. Values of the r correlation coefficient are much higher in winter months than during the summer and they decrease with distance from the Atlantic Ocean. Of interest are air temperature changes in Warsaw, Cracow, Lviv and Kiev in the XIXth –XXth centuries together with forecasts until the year 2100. Significant dependence of the climate of Poland and Ukraine on the NAO index stems from similar temperature cycles and the eight-year, eleven-year and one-hundred-year NAO index. Forecast credibility results from the similar periodicity of air temperature, the NAO index and solar activity. The forecast mean annual temperature values for 2001–2100 were obtained from the interference of statistically important temperature cycles, determined by the sinusoidal regression method.

The Influence of Cloudiness on Air Temperature and Precipitation on the Territory of Poland (1951–2000)

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 89 - 103

Astratto

Abstract

Analysis of time series was performed of cloudiness, air temperature and precipitation for the years 1951–2000, the data used representing lowland Poland. The properties of the temporal course of these elements of climate and the interrelations between their variability in time have been determined. The strength of dependence of precipitation and temperature upon the magnitude of cloudiness in the annual cycle has been assessed with the linear correlation coefficient. The essential climate-forming role of cloudiness has been confirmed. The magnitude of cloudiness over Poland explains up to 70% of variability of temperature and precipitation. These interrelations are the strongest in the warmer half of the year. Atmospheric circulation and cloudiness explain up to 85% of variability of the climate elements studied.

Differentiation of Thermal Conditions in the Vertical Profile of Natural National Park of Carpathians

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 105 - 111

Astratto

Abstract

In the paper, the results of field studies using automatic meteorological stations are presented. The studies were conducted in July 2005 – July 2006 in the vertical profile of Natural National Park of Carpathians. The results show that the thermal conditions in the area under research is strongly differentiated. Particularly large differences have been observed between the lowerings of the terrain (where the range of annual air temperature changes reaches almost 70°C, exceptionally high and exceptionally low temperature occurs often, and thermal inversions are frequently encountered) and the summit region (where the range of annual air temperature changes barely exceeds 50°C and the mean changes of daily air temperature are consideraly smaller).

Daily Oscillations of the Air Temperature in Selected Coniferous Communities in the Borecka Forest

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 113 - 120

Astratto

Abstract

Two coniferous forest communities were selected for analysis: a marshy coniferous forest and a young spruce forest, both located in the Borecka Forest. Thermal conditions develop differently in each community during the spring, due to different tree crown closure, which influences the amount of direct solar radiation reaching the substratum. Soil humidity is another factor influencing the air temperature, since the capacity and thermal inertia of the soil depend on its humidity. The results of the study are compared with thermal conditions outside the forest.

Water Level Fluctuations in the Turawa Reservoir in Relation to the Tourist Use of the Water Body

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 133 - 144

Astratto

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to assess the fluctuations of water levels in the Turawa Reservoir (50° 43’ N, 18° 08’ E) in relation to the tourist use of the water body. The reservoir is situated within the macroregion of the Silesian Lowland in the mesoregion of the Opole Plain. In administrative terms, the reservoir is situated in the pole Province within the borough of Turawa. In hydrological terms, in turn, it is situated in the catchment area of the Mała Panew river, which belongs to the basin of the Odra river. The Turawa Reservoir was opened for use in 1938, and in 1948 it was filled with water to its maximum for the first time. At present, the surface area of the reservoir, when it is filled with water to its maximum, is about 20.8 km2, its volume 99.5 mln m3, and its depth exceeds 13 meters. In the period of hydrological years 1976-2000 water levels in this reservoir were characterized by high, unnoticed in natural conditions, amplitudes of changes reaching 6.99 m. Anthropogenically stimulated fluctuations in the water level result in conflicts in terms of tasks and functions that the Turawa Reservoir was designed for. Changes in the level of the water surface in the Turawa Reservoir resulted from the impact of the natural factors (thaw and rainfall related high water levels), as well as anthropogenic ones (the need to improve sailing conditions, water supply for industrial and municipal needs). Decreasing the fluctuations of water levels in the Turawa Reservoir is necessary in order to maintain its tourist-recreational functions and keep the ecological condition of its waters at the appropriate level.

Soils and Chemical Cycling of Elements After Land Use Changes (Case Studies)

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 145 - 151

Astratto

Abstract

The process of abandonment of arable land seems to be one of the main factors of changes in landscape and soil properties. This problem occurs on nearly 10% of arable land in Poland. The natural aspect of transformation is connected with the entrance of birch trees on uncultivated land and the anthropogenic aspect is associated with pine plantations. In the beginning, the appearance of trees on the former arable land changes soil properties because soil (and plant) is the most dependent component of the natural environment. In this paper, the role of birch and pine was analysed in comparison to arable land, abandoned land without trees and birch tree communities of different age. After the entrance of birch trees, soil profiles were enriched in nitrogen and elements such as aluminium, iron, cadmium, lead, cobalt, zinc, which were moved from the sod horizon of soil or come from the atmospheric load and were accumulated in litter or the humus horizon. Compared to arable land, some elements, e.g. calcium had lower concentration under birch trees. In comparison to cultivated land, birch and pine trees made the soil environment more natural, as expressed in the chemical properties of soil.

Impact of Agricultural Use on Chosen Soil Properties

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 153 - 162

Astratto

Abstract

Agricultural use may change soil. These changes may be observed by examining certain soil properties. In numerous cases of agricultural use, soil compaction may be observed at the depth of 25–35 cm. After many years of use, this may lead to the creation of a plough sole. On arable grounds, which are generally fertilized by minerals, a decrease in organic matter content and soil acidification are frequently observed.

Will Xerothermic Grasslands of the Ponidzie Region Survive?

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 163 - 168

Astratto

Abstract

Xerothermic grasslands are veritable botanical gems of the Ponidzie region, located in the upland zone of Poland. Most of these exceptional plant communities have been formed as a result of deforestation, in habitats characterized by specific climatic, hydrological and soil conditions. The result of the natural reserve protection of the xerothermic grassland, however, is opposite to the desired result. The survival of the xerothermic grassland depends on the change in the approach to their protection. Xerothermic grasslands are an excellent example of the difficulties with maintaining very valuable, but semi-natural and anthropogenic communities, related to a large extent to traditional, extensive forms of agriculture. Similar problems occur in the case of gladiolus meadows in lower subalpine forest zones or of once-mown molinion meadows in river valleys.

Distant Yet Linked Places – A Theoretical Outlook on Geography of Contemporary Economic Activity

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 169 - 175

Astratto

Abstract

As number of studies show, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have become important factor of economic activity worldwide.

This article presents a proposal of a theoretical approach to contemporary geography of economic activity – a phenomena narrowed here to business processes usually referred to as information or knowledge-based sector of the economy. The reasoning is based on a theoretical model presented by Michael Storper that has been developed further. The output shows the existence of a distinctive paradox of digital era: the ICT potentially being able to overcome spatial barriers, lead to refocusing on spatial dimension of business. It is concluded that ICT introduce new dimension of division of business process and labor, namely a spatial one. It is leading to worldwide reconfiguration of the geography of economic activity developed under fordist regime of production – hitherto separate areas and territories are being transformed into network economy of distant yet linked places.

Image of Warsaw in the Consciousness of Its Inhabitants, Entrepreneurs and Tourists

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 177 - 185

Astratto

Abstract

The objective of the paper is to determine the characteristics and components of the Warsaw image residing in the consciousness of three investigated groups: metropolitans, entrepreneurs and tourists. A public opinion poll indicated that the prevailing features of respondents’ associations with Warsaw were related to the city particularity as the capital of Poland. Metropolitans and entrepreneurs’ conscious imagination of War-saw were observed to be very suggestive, while tourists’ were observed to be weak. The respondents regarded the city of Warsaw as the most attractive in Poland to run a business in and to visit, and as possessing many historical and cultural assets. The research showed that the majority of the investigated metropolitans, entrepreneurs and tourists judged the living conditions in the capital as good or very good.

Attitudes of Local Government Authorities Towards a Neighbouring Town

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 187 - 196

Astratto

Abstract

As a result of suburbanization, intensification of urbanization processes in suburban areas is taking place. The suburban zone is understood to be an area located in direct neighbourhood of a city or town, related to it and being systematically transformed. It is also defined as a transient area between a village and a city/town, mainly in spatial terms (mixed forms of space development and transient settlement types). The aim of this paper is to define the attitudes of suburban local government authorities towards neighbouring city/town. In order to achieve this aim, methods of analytic description, direct observation, analysis of documents such as “Local development plans”, “Development Strategies”, “The study of causation and directions in spatial management” of suburban municipalities in the Kielce county were used.

Cosmopolitans of Small Fatherlands

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 197 - 208

Astratto

Abstract

The paper investigates into the specific features of the residents living in the metropolitan areas (MAs) in Poland. Basing on the statistical data and survey conducted in the two Polish MAs we draw conclusions on the spatial and political behaviour of metropolitan residents and on their territorial identity. The results show that a fair share of metropolitan residents live in a scale wider then their home municipality. Moreover some citizens (especially those who migrated to suburbs recently and those with higher education) reveal stronger spatial identity with the whole metropolitan area then with their home municipality. Delocalisation is also reflected in the lack of interest in municipal politics and low trust in suburb municipal politicians, while their interest in general politics remains on a high level.

Transformations of Tourism in the Colca Valley – New Actors and New Patterns of Local Development

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 219 - 229

Astratto

Abstract

The article presents history and dynamics of tourist movement in the Colca Valley. Analyzing results of field research conducted in 2003 and 2007 the authors describe main changes in the attitudes of local inhabitants and authorities towards tourism and identify their character. Tourist activities based on the Colca Canyon natural attractions, remaining under total control of external tour operators since the eighties and perceived as a burden in the area, are seen now as a possible important factor of local development. New bottom-up initiatives are spreading in the Colca localities supported by NGOs and a public development program. Patterns of more sustainable tourism emerge and local culture is turning into an important element of the Colca tourist product.

Tourism in Rural Areas of Castilla-La Mancha

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 231 - 237

Astratto

Abstract

The rural areas of Castilla-La Mancha have managed to preserve a unique natural and cultural character. A great diversity of touristic qualities makes the region especially attractive for development of rural tourism.

For many years, the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha had to cope with numerous socio-economic difficulties. Development of the tourist industry resulted in diversification of income sources and higher level of employment. Another positive effect of the process was activation of female members of the community. The principle aim of this article is to underline the complementary role of tourism in rural areas in relation to agriculture and urban tourism.

Changes in the Environment and Migration in Southern Morocco – Example of the Mhamid Oasis

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 239 - 250

Astratto

Abstract

The subject of the article is an analysis of changes in the environment and economy of oases in southern Morocco, on the basis of a case study of Mhamid. The conclusions are that water investments carried out in the Draa Valley intensified the desertification process. This is exemplified by a stronger aeolian deflation, worsening living conditions of the population, limiting of arable areas and finally, migration. Paradoxically, because of desertification, the region has a chance to develop economically because the newly created sand dunes fields stimulate development of tourism.

Madagascar – An Island or a Continent? On the Notions of ‘Island’ and ‘Insularity’

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 251 - 258

Astratto

Abstract

The impreciseness and conjectural character of the notions of island and continent have been the subject of many debates. Most researchers agree that unique features of an island include isolation and significant linkages between the economy and life of the inhabitants with the sea. Some characteristic features are related to spatial development and a concentration of towns and the transport network near the sea. However, Madagascar, which is regarded as an island in all kinds of classifications, fulfils only some of the above criteria. As far as the natural life is concerned, some consequences of spatial isolation can be observed, particularly the predominance of endemic and relict species in the fauna and flora, whereas in the economic and social sphere, Madagascar reveals features which are characteristic of continents. Is therefore Madagascar rightly considered an island?

The aim of the article is verification of possibility of use of UNEP isolation indicator for measuring isolation of tropical islands for tourism purposes. 30 tropical islands were included in the study. The correlation between intensity of tourism movement and isolation indicator by Spearman rank correlation was –0,46. More isolated islands have smaller intensity of tourism movement and less isolated have higher intensity of tourism movement ratio. But there are also exceptions from this rule – territories which are more isolated and with higher intensity of tourism movement such as Maldives and less isolated with the smaller intensity of tourism movement such as Sao Tome and Principe. UNEP isolation indicator is not ideal measure for tourism purposes.

Stages of Development of Cartography as a Science

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 267 - 276

Astratto

Abstract

Three essential periods may be singled out in the development of cartography as a science:

1. From the beginning of the last century to the mid-sixties is the period of development of cartography as a distinct science.

2. The period dating from the mid-sixties till the eighties is the golden age of development of theoretical cartography with special amplification of discussions on the subject of the theoretical fundamentals of cartography. At the end of the former period and at the beginning of the latter, cartography finally distinguished itself as an independent science. In 1959, the International Cartographic Association was founded. In 1961, the International Yearbook of Cartography was published for the first time and beginning in 1969, Polski Przegląd Kartograficzny (the Polish Cartographic Review). A year earlier, Komisja Kartograficzna Polskiego Towarzystwa Geograficznego (the Cartographic Commission of the Polish Geographical Society) was established.

3. Since the mid-eighties, and even somewhat earlier, use of new IT technologies, especially interest in the map as an element of geographic information systems, has become the dominating trend in cartography.

Cartographic Methods and Their Correctness on Maps in the Polish Press Since the mid–19th Century

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 277 - 288

Astratto

Abstract

On the background of the conditions of functioning of the Polish press since the mid–19th century, the paper describes cartographic and graphic methods used on press maps, with the emphasis on the quantitative methods of information presentation. The qualitative methods were mostly used in a proper way. The factors determining the level of press mapping were the skills of map makers and the limitations resulting from the letterpress printing technology. The application of computer technology and the shift to offset printing in the last decade of the 20th century overcame these obstacles. New possibilities of the creation of maps with richer content and more graphically effective emerged. Despite these new possibilities one still needs at least basic knowledge on cartographic methods and map graphics in order to be able to prepare the cartographically correct maps. The maps presented in this paper focus on the presentation of the most common mistakes, with less emphasis put on the cartographic methods and map graphics.

The Vistula River as One of Poland’s Symbols and Its Perception by High School Students from Vistula Towns

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 299 - 308

Astratto

Abstract

This paper presents the perception of the Vistula river, the most important of Poland’s rivers, by high-school students from selected Vistula towns and cities. The study of the perception of this river, conducted in 2006-2007, concerned, among other things, the symbolism of the Vistula, its role in nature and landscape of Poland, as well as the course of the river flowing through Poland. It was ascertained that most students perceive the Vistula as a symbol of Poland or the longest river in Poland, but they do not notice, for instance, its ecological role, although they are aware of its role in the landscape of Poland. The results of the study determine the direction and the topics of the geographic education concerning the Vistula river in Polish schools.

Geographical Paths as an Auxiliary Didactic Resource – A Study Proposal

Pubblicato online: 25 Nov 2018
Pagine: 309 - 314

Astratto

Abstract

Didactic paths play a very important part in modern education, on the primary school level as well as at universities. Beside other things, they let students compare book knowledge with the real world. Unfortunately, there are only a few geographical didactic paths, as opposed to those in history or science.

The new offer for preparing methodological geographical paths begins with an analysis of documents as a curriculum model or a syllabus with chosen items to be taught which can be discussed during outdoor lessons and finally examines the area which fulfils a large number of requirements.

It is possible that in this way of preparing methodological geographical paths the boring, monotonous area will give many possibilities to discuss teaching items.

Abstract

Examples of unusual and unconventional graphic solutions which we can often find in the times of fast developing computer technology are discussed in the article. Many of them are suggested by various GIS programs, few of them may be found in the press or on the Internet. This means that their users are people who are not associated with cartography and who are not familiar with the framework of cartographic methods.
