Natural conditions for the development of sustainable agriculture in the eastern part of the Łowicko-Błońska plain

Pubblicato online: 18 Oct 2012
Pagine: 5 - 10

Astratto

Abstract

In present times, when human interference in nature can be quite substantial, solutions are needed to protect the natural environment. Sustainable farming is much more beneficial to the environment than traditional one. The Łowicz-Błonie Plain, and its eastern part in particular, has good soil and climatic conditions which can support the development of agriculture and the water conditions are only slightly worse here than in the neighbouring areas. The tessellated nature of the soils supports a wide variety of crops, which in turn allows farmers to plan crop rotation so as to enrich the region’s biodiversity and protect nature.

Cavernous weathering forms in SW Iceland: a case study on weathering of basalts in a cold temperate maritime climate

Pubblicato online: 18 Oct 2012
Pagine: 11 - 16

Astratto

Abstract

The article is a case study of the development of cavernous weathering forms (alveoli and tafoni) on a sea cliff near Keflavik on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland. The majority of forms are found on vertical or inclined rock faces and cluster around the uppermost edge of the cliff. Single hollows gradually evolve due to back wearing of their sidewalls into complex caverns, until finally the whole outermost layer of basalt is removed. Particular attention is paid to mineralogical changes of basalts due to chemical and salt weathering. Chemical decomposition of feldspars, pyroxenes and olivines followed by precipitation of iron on and within the weathering rind, the presence of micro- and macro-pores such as gas bubbles and delivery of marine salts are proposed to be the key factors influencing cavern development.

The Russian economic space: evolution during periods of reform, growth and crisis (1990–2010)

Pubblicato online: 18 Oct 2012
Pagine: 23 - 28

Astratto

Abstract

The aim of the article is to identify the main tendencies in the dynamics of interregional disparities in the level of socio-economic development in Russia during periods of economic growth and crisis. These trends have been identified on the basis of an analysis of the regional coefficient of asymmetry of key per-capita indicators (GDP, investment in fixed capital etc.) as well as indicators of spatial concentration in Russia and deviations from the average (for GDP, per capita GDP and investments) at the federal district and regional levels. The main factors driving the dynamics of these disparities were the economic crisis, government anti-crisis measures and measures of social support. Comparison of the level of interregional disproportions in Russia and abroad indicated that the differences between levels of socio-economic development at the federal level are comparable with differences in EU countries, but at the level of regions - with countries of the world.

Contemporary migration of Poles to Lebanon and Egypt

Pubblicato online: 18 Oct 2012
Pagine: 29 - 35

Astratto

Abstract

The article describes the contemporary Polish diaspora in Lebanon and Egypt. The similarities and differences between the two communities are examined in detail. The contemporary phases of the migration of Poles to Lebanon and Egypt are listed and described, the Polish diaspora is mapped and its typology in these countries is outlined. In addition, the issues faced by mixed marriages are described as are the difficulties Poles have in adaptating to life in countries with different cultures.

Description and course of backpacking trips depending on the nationality of the tourists

Pubblicato online: 18 Oct 2012
Pagine: 36 - 42

Astratto

Abstract

The following article discusses the differences between backpackers and mass tourists. Its objective is to describe the nature of backpacking trips and to present the dependencies between the course of a trip, the reasons for taking the trip and the nationality of the respondents. The study is based on the results of a survey carried out among backpackers from Israel, Japan, Poland and Germany. Well-defined differences were revealed by the responses given by the Israeli and Japanese backpackers.

Reasons for choosing geography studies. Comparative analysis of two academic centres: Warsaw and Kielce

Pubblicato online: 18 Oct 2012
Pagine: 43 - 48

Astratto

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to compare the reasons for choosing a degree in geography by students starting their studies in two academic centres: Warsaw and Kielce. The first is a big city with rich traditions and one of the best academic centres in Poland, while the second is regional, much smaller but developing. In the research, special attention was paid to the reasons for choosing geography as a major, a variety of ideas considering future job and professional prospects open to geography graduates as well as attitudes toward the profession of a geography teacher. The research involved interviews with first and second-year students in both centres.

Neighbourhood coefficients of cellular automata for research on land use changes with map algebra

Pubblicato online: 18 Oct 2012
Pagine: 57 - 63

Astratto

Abstract

The dependency of land use and the neighbouring land cover patches is related to the existing neighbourhood or the predominant land use types in a given region, which stimulates further land changes of the lot being observed. Land use changes can be considered a complex and (to an extent) random process. The complexity of interactions means that the conventional deductive models are constrained, particularly in the case of the spatio-temporal phenomena, and implies the application of cellular automata to spatial research. Cellular automata are similar to the map algebra models in GIS. The concept of using neighbourhood coefficients in the analysis of land use changes is based on the combination of map algebra with two-dimensional cellular automata. The aims of this research included formulating the theoretical structure of neighbourhood coefficients, analysing their operationalization and testing their practical application. The verification of research and procedures included maps and statistics of simulations of land use changes in Poland.
