The Primacy of the Mental in the Explanation of Human Action

Online veröffentlicht: 31 Dec 2018
Seitenbereich: 73 - 88

Zusammenfassung

Abstract

The mentalistic orthodoxy about reason-explanations of action in the philosophy of mind has recently come under renewed attack. Julia Tanney is among those who have critiqued mentalism. The alternative account of the folk practice of giving reason-explanations of actions she has provided affords features of an agent’s external environment a privileged role in explaining the intentional behaviour of agents. The authors defend the mentalistic orthodoxy from Tanney’s criticisms, arguing that Tanney fails to provide a philosophically satisfying or psychologically realistic account of reason-explanation of action.

Yablo’s Paradox and Beginningless Time

Online veröffentlicht: 31 Dec 2018
Seitenbereich: 89 - 96

Zusammenfassung

Abstract

The structure of Yablo’s paradox is analysed and generalised in order to show that beginningless step-by-step determination processes can be used to provoke antinomies, more concretely, to make our logical and our ontological intuitions clash. The flow of time and the flow of causality are usually conceived of as intimately intertwined, so that temporal causation is the very paradigm of a step-by-step determination process. As a consequence, the paradoxical nature of beginningless step-by-step determination processes concerns time and causality as usually conceived.

On the Rationality of Decisions with Unreliable Probabilities

Online veröffentlicht: 31 Dec 2018
Seitenbereich: 97 - 116

Zusammenfassung

Abstract

The standard Bayesian recipe for selecting the rational choice is presented. A familiar example in which the recipe fails to produce any definite result is introduced. It is argued that a generalization of Gärdenfors’ and Sahlin’s theory of unreliable probabilities — which itself does not guarantee a solution to the problem — offers the best available approach. But a number of challenges to this approach are also presented and discussed.
