Physical Model of Energetic Processes in the Marine Diesel Engine

Astratto

Abstract

The paper describes the preliminary physical model of gas-dynamic processes that take place in the cylinder of marine diesel engine. The model is a part of the work undertaken at the Institute for Construction and Exploitation of Ships at the Polish Naval Academy. The physical model is the basis for the development of a mathematical model of marine diesel engine, which will be useful for determining the energy efficiency of Polish ships, as well as for diagnostic purposes.

Abstract

This article describes the proposal to use the M2M communication to enhance the safety of people, ships and other marine infrastructure, in broadly defined marine systems. In addition, there are numerous examples of planned solutions to be implemented in the near future as well as new services. The proposal for M2M communication system architecture is described below. In addition, the use of the STRUGA system radio interface as the M2M communication interface is proposed.

Abstract

The article presents the impact of major maritime accidents on the development of international regulations concerning the safety of navigation and environmental protection of the seas and oceans. It contains analysis of the reasons and consequences of maritime disasters like the accidents of: ‘Titanic’, ‘Torrey Canyon’, ‘Amoco Cadiz’, ‘Herald of Free Enterprise’, ‘Exxon Valdez’, ‘Estonia’, ‘Erika’ and ‘Prestige’ as well as international agreements established in order to prevent this type of accident in the future or, at least, limit their consequences.

Semi -Markov Reliability Model of Two Different Units Cold Standby System

Abstract

A semi-Markov stochastic process is used for solving in a reliability problem in the paper. The problem concerns of two different component cold standby system and a switch. To obtain the reliability characteristic and parameters of the system we construct so called an embedded semi-Markov process in the process describing operation process of the system. In the model the conditional time to failure of the system is represented by a random variable denoting the first passage time from the given state to the specified subset of states. We apply theorems of the Semi-Markov processes theory concerning the conditional reliability functions to calculate the reliability function and mean time to failure of the system. Often an exact reliability function of the system by using Laplace transform is difficult to calculate, frequently impossible. The semi-Markov processes perturbation theory, allows to obtain an approximate reliability function of the system in that case.

In the paper, there have been constructed discrete models of the non-classical Bittner operational calculus that are related to the notions of Jackson and Hahn derivatives, both known from the quantum calculus. To achieve it, we have used the Bittner operational calculus representation for the forward difference.

Automatic Identification System (AIS) Dynamic Data Estimation Based on Discrete Kalman Filter (KF) Algorithm

Abstract

Due to the safety reason, the ship movement on the littoral area should be monitored, tracked, recorded and stored. Automatic Identification System (AIS) is the perfect tool to ensure this requirement. The limit probability for the AIS dynamic data availability can be limited by the lack of Global Position System (GPS) signal, heading (HDG) and rate of turn (ROT) data in position report. Availability of data link is an additional limitation. For this purpose, it is possible to attach the Discrete Kalman filter (KF) for the position, and course estimation. Coordinate estimation in the absence of a transmission link can improve the quality of AIS service at Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) stations. This article presents Kalman filtering algorithm to improve the possibilities of ship motion tracking and monitoring in the TSS (Traffic Separation Scheme) and fairways area. Only 39 iterations were presented to familiarize how the Kalman filter algorithm works. The archival data from 2006 were used deliberately. During that time, there were problems with the AIS availability service. With the use of measurements series from those years, it is easier to observe the effectiveness of Kalman filter in absence of AIS data.

Abstract

The Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering is an heir to the Faculty of Technology of the School of Naval Cadets established in Toruń in 1931. This article presents the most important events associated with the development of the faculty in its 85 years of uninterrupted activity, including the WW II period in Great Britain, when the first in the history of Poland maritime school abroad, was established aboard ORP ‘Gdynia’ in the British sea base of Devenport. The first part of the article concludes in 1955, i.e. the moment the Higher Naval School (undergraduate school) was established. The second part will cover the period of 1955-2016, i.e. the Naval High School and the Naval Academy.

Application of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to Photogrammetric Developments

Abstract

The article presents the possibility of using unmanned aerial vehicle to perform selected photogrammetric studies. The first part shows the mathematical basis of aerotriangulation based on a series of images. Next, a photogrammetric system consisting of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a camera and specialized software for recording and processing images was presented. The main part shows the stages of the photogrammetric processing from the images i.e. mission plan of the incursion, creation of a thick cloud of points and a three-dimensional model. It also shows the analysis of the quality of the developed orthophotomap and a numerical model of the surface area, including photopoints by comparing them to orthographic images that are shared on Google. The final part contains generalized conclusions derived from the conducted research.

Safety of Navigation in the Arctic

Abstract

This article presents the results of research based on analysis of ice conditions on the Arctic Sea in recent years and consequences of these changes. The Arctic ice extent are changed due to global warming. Reducing the ice surface leads to intensification of the navigation of the waters of the Arctic Sea, resulting in a significant reduction of the distance between the ports of Europe and East Asia and the North and South Americas. This phenomenon is conducive to the opening of new shipping routes leading through the Arctic Sea. After the entry into force of 1st January, 2017 The International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code) is expected to improve the safety of conducting the navigation of the waters. Analysis of maritime accidents in the Arctic waters shows that the number of accidents has a growing trend, however, last year brings them a significant decreasing.
