Biomonitoring Laboratory Oriented to Software Applications Development

Résumé

Abstract

This paper presents a project-oriented laboratory. It is intended to provide an educational and research environment that stimulates innovative solutions in the growing field of Bioengineering. The authors took the advantages of the emerging technology and the increasing popularity of wearable biomonitoring devices, to teach students the key elements regarding the application of Information Technology in health monitoring. The students were involved in a complex project, along which they gain basic knowledge about the software development for biomonitoring, and apply it to effectively develop common structures and software applications. There are presented the stages of the laboratory work, with illustrations of the applications implementation at different levels of the hierarchy, starting from collecting data from the biomonitoring device, and finalizing with the data visualization by the end-user.

Analysis of Energy Efficiency and Financial Profitability for an Active Filter Equipment Used for Large Industrial Consumer

Abstract

The aim purpose of this paper is to analyze the efficiency of active filtering equipment use for a large industrial consumer connected to the national power system. Based on data acquisition system the technological process of the consumer is identified and modeled, and then is optimized from energy consumption point of view. The compensation of power factor by reducing the consumption of reactive power and the filtering methods for current harmonics are due by using active filters. The measurements of the power quality parameters with active filter installed, being compared with the ones without filter, confirm the results of research and clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the implemented solution. To prove the effectiveness of the investment is developed a financial and economic calculation, making a benefit and cost ratio, calculation which clearly proves the profitability of this investment.

Four-Axis CNC Machine with Microcontroller for Cutting Polystyrene with Hot Wire

Abstract

Numerically controlled machines require precise control, because it is always necessary to know the placement of the effector. Control involves the use of electric motors that can be checked with precision. Therefore stepper motors are preferred. A further advance in stepper control is to incorporate a reaction mechanism for the rotor (for example, an encoder) so as communication is optimal for generating the torque, depending on the position of the rotor. This turns the motor into a servo mechanism with very high torque and very good position resolution. An advance in this technique is to operate the motor in a closed loop only if the error of rotor positioning becomes too high. This will allow the system to avoid oscillation while searching for a position, a problem that commonly occurs with servos. The supervision of a numerically controlled tool is limited to the control of electric motors that actuate mechanical assemblies. Control can be implemented by using specialized integrated circuits or microcontrollers. This paper presents a numerically controlled (CNC) machine with microcontroller.

Prototype of an Electric Drive Elevator

Abstract

The research purpose of the authors is reducing the energy consumption of the main worldwide consumer - the electric motors- by useful utilization of the input energy through the Regenerative Electric Drive System having also the power quality features. The prototype of the electric elevator consists mainly of two trolley: one serve for the active load, and the other as counterweight, gearbox, power converter, induction machine and chain transmission. The elevator is driven by using 4kW three-phase induction machine through AC-AC power converter and has the capacity of 450 kg. The numerical simulation results and the experimental platform are shown.

Abstract

The development of rechargeable electrochemical sources, especially those based on Li-ion technology, has opened the way for their use in various fields ranging from electronics and IT to electric cars. New ideas appear, such as using replaced the batteries from electrical vehicles in the development of energy storage devices for critical consumers such as Data Centers. New uses impose detecting the unfavorable operating conditions which may endanger the power supply of Data Centers. This paper, by modeling and simulation, analyzes some particular problems of Li-ion batteries that appear due to the differences in state of charge of the cells.

Flux Weakening Optimal Control of the Three-Phase Induction Motor

Abstract

This paper illustrates the importance of control on energy saving opportunity in electrical drives systems. The paper’s objective is to develop an optimal control law for a variable flux drive systems with induction machines. The optimal control provides dynamic regimes with minimum input energy and performs the minimization of the copper losses from induction motor. The solution of the problem uses optimal control theory and the numerical integration of the matrix Riccati differential equation. The synthesis of the optimal energetic control law is accomplished by comparing, via simulation, the two control methods: conventional and optimal.

New Pumped Storage Plants as Renewable Energy Sources in Romania

Abstract

In Romania, there are no pumped storage plants (PSPs) significant from the point of view of the National Power System (NPS). For more than 30 years, one site is expected to achieve 1000 MW PSP, using the existing reservoir Tarnita, on Somes river, as the lower reservoir. Recently, Hidroelectrica launched a study identifying new potential sites for PSPs in the Eastern part of Romania, where there is a huge development for wind farms and where Cernavoda nuclear power plant is located, with 2 units of 700 MW each in operation and other 2 units to be built until 2035. These PSPs will cover the ancillary services and, according to a new Government Ordinance, will enable a better integration of the existing RES into the NPS, and will increase the generation of electricity from RES by their own production of electricity.

Modeling the PV Power Systems Storage Batteries Charging Characteristics

Abstract

In this paper, a numerical method is presented for measuring and analyzing the characteristics of the charging process for nine photovoltaic panels storage batteries systems. The data was collected with the PV charger module which has a built-in data acquisition board. A source code algorithm written in Matlab is developed to obtain a mathematical model for the characteristics of the charging process of the batteries connected to the PV panels. Using the interpolation method, a mathematical model is obtained. The numerical error between experimental and theoretical results prove that the method is accurate.

This paper deals with a new coaxial linear permanent magnet motor. For a designed physical model of this motor, the representative magnetic spectrums are determined: the spectrum of the excitation field provided by cylindrical permanent magnet, and the spectrum of total magnetic field given by superposition of permanent magnet field and of energizing coil field.

Abstract

The advance in the field of augmented reality (AR) allows newer approaches to traditional activities, such as service, maintenance or intervention in various field operations. The idea of this paper is to present the design for an innovative AR platform which is currently under development and is designed to be used in Electrical Power Stations. Field data from sensors and additional information stored in QR tags placed on equipment’s are transmitted to a server and from here to the AR equipment’s carried by the intervention personnel. In this case, real time data can be displayed, enhancing the perception of team members and providing additional info that can help them to fulfill their mission.

Digital mammograms are a useful tool for breast cancer detection. The quality of digital mammogram image can have a negative effect on the computer-aided diagnosis system. We investigate the use of automatic image thresholding methods for microcalcification detection in mammographic images. Experimental results on the BI-RADS 4 images dataset confirm the proposed approach.

Analysis and Visualization of Natural Threats Against the Security of Electricity Transmission System

Abstract

Electricity is one of the crucial energies of modern society, but it is greatly threatened by various kinds of menaces, especially natural hazards. Although they rarely happen, their occurrence may hugely affect the operation of power system. In this paper, we firstly, according the impact on power systems, classify natural threats into two categories (natural disasters and extreme weather conditions) and several subcategories (geological, hydrological, meteorological and climatological). Then the changes in natural threats to power systems and their trends during recent decades are discussed, along with a review of events that pose natural threats to the power system. Finally, the georeferenced model based on the Italy transmission system for natural threats analysis is presented.

Abstract

The analyses concerning an electric consumer may consist in determination of several components of electric current, injected by this consumer, in the electric network. Regarding sequence negative and sequence zero components of electric current, the unbalanced electrical consumer is the cause of its presence. Regarding harmonic components of electric current, the non-linear consumer is the cause of its presence. The efficiency about electric energy consumption may be characterized by the values of those components; the paper describes several considerations regarding those components of electrical current and its flow.

Review on Electromagnetic Stimulation of Alive Tissues

Abstract

The electric, magnetic or electromagnetic phenomena that occur in the biological tissues include: the behavior of excitable tissue (the sources), the electric currents and potentials in the volume conductor, the magnetic field at and beyond the body, the response of excitable cells to electric and magnetic field stimulation (through changes in their electrical activity, changes of chemical transport through cell membrane); the intrinsic electric and magnetic properties of the tissue. This paper presents an overview of fundamental phenomena occurring in the application of stimuli with a future purpose of focusing on several models of external electromagnetic stimulation. The target is to create models of the electroconductive anatomy of some alive tissues will be proposed, in order to investigate the fields and the currents generated by the on-set of an electric field (in the first case) or a time-variant magnetic field (in the second case) or the superposition of the two types of stimuli.

Abstract

Feedforward and feedback control are new control algorithms used in industrial processes control and very suitable for grinding systems control. The purpose of this paper is to provide a design technique for a control system of a grinding circuit using the feedforward and feedback control. The control scheme is based on the undercompensation of the milling feed flow. The best value of the undercompensation is chosen after analyzing several scenarios. The controller design based on this value proves to provide improved productivity.

Smart Thermal Grids – A Review

Abstract

In line with the Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC), EU member states have intensified their efforts to increase the share of renewable energy in energy supply. Renewable energy sources will be a challenge for the current district heating concept, requiring system flexibility both in terms of heat supply and heat consumption. Besides, they are hard to accommodate in areas with high population density, as it is the case with many towns and cities. The municipalities will have to identify suitable locations, which in turn will lead to distributed heat supply. The requirement of the 2010/31/EU (EPBD) Directive that all new buildings will have to be nearzero energy buildings will result in buildings fitted with solar collectors; some buildings will produce more energy than they can use. To accommodate all these challenges, the scientists have come up with the new concept of Thermal Smart Grids. The renewable energy will then be shared with the whole district heating grid, and the network will also be used for heat storage when consumption is lower than production. Smart thermal grids are expected to be an integrated part of the future smart energy systems, integrated electricity, gas and thermal grids.

Choanal Atresia – A Permanent Challenge in Rhinology Pathology

Abstract

Choanal atresia is the most frequent nasal congenital malformation, which, depending on the unilateral or bilateral location, has a different symptomatology. The diagnosis is confirmed through the patient’s medical history, nasal endoscopy and imagistic examination (computed tomography). The treatment is surgical and aims the (fibrous and bone) tissue disintegration which blocks the choana, and is performed through endoscopic surgical techniques. The blocked area is maintained functional by mounting a stent at the choanal tunnel level. The authors aim to describe their own experience regarding both the diagnoses as well as the treatment of this pathology, the results being compared to those from the quoted literature. The surgical technique differs depending on the type of choanal atresia: bone or membranous. The duration to maintain a fix position of the stent and the material used for the stent represent the variables which provide the success of the endoscopic surgical intervention of the choanal atresia. Subsequently, the patient is followed up at 2, 6, 12 months in the first year and then annually until 18 years of age. Choanal atresia is solved through endoscopic surgical techniques by mounting a silicone stent which shall be maintained in position for a minimum period of 3 months. The endoscopic approach of the unilateral choanal imperforation is the method of choice with minimum complications, increased success rate and fast recovery.

Development of User-friendly Tool for Energy Behavioral Change of Consumers

Abstract

This paper purposes to provide an user-friendly intelligent tool, integrating fuzzy controllers and multi-agent techniques, able to motivate and to support behavioral change of energy end-users, having as main objective to re-define the role of energy consumer in “prosumer” in the context of a reorganized decentralized energy market, now reported to intelligent grids (smart grids). Integration of interactive technologies in a decision support system for microgrids energy management optimizes: functioning from an economical point of view, active control of distributed generation, controlled consumption, loading the storage equipment. The added value of the proposed tool consists of integrating decision theory and artificial intelligence concepts in monitoring and control actions, allowing “prosumers”: to make energy usage data accessible and to demonstrate that energy savings can be achieved without compromising comfort levels.

Abstract

As a real progress evolves in the field of wastewater treatment, the scientific community is addressing new challenges at different design levels. One of them constitutes the optimization of energy consumption and the use of various renewable energy sources. In this article technological models of wastewater treatment plant are developed in order to analyze the energy delivered by PV system. The technological models are closely associated to an optimum energy consumption of the plant and the simulation results validate the proposed methodology.

Telecommunication industry is based on the optic fibre technology used as a transmitter, providing very high transmission speeds (40Gbps). For the maintenance of the optic fibre network there are various instruments for testing and measuring, having diversified capabilities. The paper aims to analyse some events that occurred in optic fibres.

New Pumped Storage Plants as Renewable Energy Sources in Romania

Résumé

Abstract

In Romania, there are no pumped storage plants (PSPs) significant from the point of view of the National Power System (NPS). For more than 30 years, one site is expected to achieve 1000 MW PSP, using the existing reservoir Tarnita, on Somes river, as the lower reservoir. Recently, Hidroelectrica launched a study identifying new potential sites for PSPs in the Eastern part of Romania, where there is a huge development for wind farms and where Cernavoda nuclear power plant is located, with 2 units of 700 MW each in operation and other 2 units to be built until 2035. These PSPs will cover the ancillary services and, according to a new Government Ordinance, will enable a better integration of the existing RES into the NPS, and will increase the generation of electricity from RES by their own production of electricity.

Modeling the PV Power Systems Storage Batteries Charging Characteristics

Abstract

In this paper, a numerical method is presented for measuring and analyzing the characteristics of the charging process for nine photovoltaic panels storage batteries systems. The data was collected with the PV charger module which has a built-in data acquisition board. A source code algorithm written in Matlab is developed to obtain a mathematical model for the characteristics of the charging process of the batteries connected to the PV panels. Using the interpolation method, a mathematical model is obtained. The numerical error between experimental and theoretical results prove that the method is accurate.

This paper deals with a new coaxial linear permanent magnet motor. For a designed physical model of this motor, the representative magnetic spectrums are determined: the spectrum of the excitation field provided by cylindrical permanent magnet, and the spectrum of total magnetic field given by superposition of permanent magnet field and of energizing coil field.

Abstract

The advance in the field of augmented reality (AR) allows newer approaches to traditional activities, such as service, maintenance or intervention in various field operations. The idea of this paper is to present the design for an innovative AR platform which is currently under development and is designed to be used in Electrical Power Stations. Field data from sensors and additional information stored in QR tags placed on equipment’s are transmitted to a server and from here to the AR equipment’s carried by the intervention personnel. In this case, real time data can be displayed, enhancing the perception of team members and providing additional info that can help them to fulfill their mission.

Digital mammograms are a useful tool for breast cancer detection. The quality of digital mammogram image can have a negative effect on the computer-aided diagnosis system. We investigate the use of automatic image thresholding methods for microcalcification detection in mammographic images. Experimental results on the BI-RADS 4 images dataset confirm the proposed approach.

Analysis and Visualization of Natural Threats Against the Security of Electricity Transmission System

Abstract

Electricity is one of the crucial energies of modern society, but it is greatly threatened by various kinds of menaces, especially natural hazards. Although they rarely happen, their occurrence may hugely affect the operation of power system. In this paper, we firstly, according the impact on power systems, classify natural threats into two categories (natural disasters and extreme weather conditions) and several subcategories (geological, hydrological, meteorological and climatological). Then the changes in natural threats to power systems and their trends during recent decades are discussed, along with a review of events that pose natural threats to the power system. Finally, the georeferenced model based on the Italy transmission system for natural threats analysis is presented.

Abstract

The analyses concerning an electric consumer may consist in determination of several components of electric current, injected by this consumer, in the electric network. Regarding sequence negative and sequence zero components of electric current, the unbalanced electrical consumer is the cause of its presence. Regarding harmonic components of electric current, the non-linear consumer is the cause of its presence. The efficiency about electric energy consumption may be characterized by the values of those components; the paper describes several considerations regarding those components of electrical current and its flow.

Review on Electromagnetic Stimulation of Alive Tissues

Abstract

The electric, magnetic or electromagnetic phenomena that occur in the biological tissues include: the behavior of excitable tissue (the sources), the electric currents and potentials in the volume conductor, the magnetic field at and beyond the body, the response of excitable cells to electric and magnetic field stimulation (through changes in their electrical activity, changes of chemical transport through cell membrane); the intrinsic electric and magnetic properties of the tissue. This paper presents an overview of fundamental phenomena occurring in the application of stimuli with a future purpose of focusing on several models of external electromagnetic stimulation. The target is to create models of the electroconductive anatomy of some alive tissues will be proposed, in order to investigate the fields and the currents generated by the on-set of an electric field (in the first case) or a time-variant magnetic field (in the second case) or the superposition of the two types of stimuli.

A Control Design Technique for Grinding Systems with Feedforward Undercompensation and Feedback Control

Abstract

Feedforward and feedback control are new control algorithms used in industrial processes control and very suitable for grinding systems control. The purpose of this paper is to provide a design technique for a control system of a grinding circuit using the feedforward and feedback control. The control scheme is based on the undercompensation of the milling feed flow. The best value of the undercompensation is chosen after analyzing several scenarios. The controller design based on this value proves to provide improved productivity.

Smart Thermal Grids – A Review

Abstract

In line with the Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC), EU member states have intensified their efforts to increase the share of renewable energy in energy supply. Renewable energy sources will be a challenge for the current district heating concept, requiring system flexibility both in terms of heat supply and heat consumption. Besides, they are hard to accommodate in areas with high population density, as it is the case with many towns and cities. The municipalities will have to identify suitable locations, which in turn will lead to distributed heat supply. The requirement of the 2010/31/EU (EPBD) Directive that all new buildings will have to be nearzero energy buildings will result in buildings fitted with solar collectors; some buildings will produce more energy than they can use. To accommodate all these challenges, the scientists have come up with the new concept of Thermal Smart Grids. The renewable energy will then be shared with the whole district heating grid, and the network will also be used for heat storage when consumption is lower than production. Smart thermal grids are expected to be an integrated part of the future smart energy systems, integrated electricity, gas and thermal grids.

Choanal Atresia – A Permanent Challenge in Rhinology Pathology

Abstract

Choanal atresia is the most frequent nasal congenital malformation, which, depending on the unilateral or bilateral location, has a different symptomatology. The diagnosis is confirmed through the patient’s medical history, nasal endoscopy and imagistic examination (computed tomography). The treatment is surgical and aims the (fibrous and bone) tissue disintegration which blocks the choana, and is performed through endoscopic surgical techniques. The blocked area is maintained functional by mounting a stent at the choanal tunnel level. The authors aim to describe their own experience regarding both the diagnoses as well as the treatment of this pathology, the results being compared to those from the quoted literature. The surgical technique differs depending on the type of choanal atresia: bone or membranous. The duration to maintain a fix position of the stent and the material used for the stent represent the variables which provide the success of the endoscopic surgical intervention of the choanal atresia. Subsequently, the patient is followed up at 2, 6, 12 months in the first year and then annually until 18 years of age. Choanal atresia is solved through endoscopic surgical techniques by mounting a silicone stent which shall be maintained in position for a minimum period of 3 months. The endoscopic approach of the unilateral choanal imperforation is the method of choice with minimum complications, increased success rate and fast recovery.

Development of User-friendly Tool for Energy Behavioral Change of Consumers

Abstract

This paper purposes to provide an user-friendly intelligent tool, integrating fuzzy controllers and multi-agent techniques, able to motivate and to support behavioral change of energy end-users, having as main objective to re-define the role of energy consumer in “prosumer” in the context of a reorganized decentralized energy market, now reported to intelligent grids (smart grids). Integration of interactive technologies in a decision support system for microgrids energy management optimizes: functioning from an economical point of view, active control of distributed generation, controlled consumption, loading the storage equipment. The added value of the proposed tool consists of integrating decision theory and artificial intelligence concepts in monitoring and control actions, allowing “prosumers”: to make energy usage data accessible and to demonstrate that energy savings can be achieved without compromising comfort levels.

Abstract

As a real progress evolves in the field of wastewater treatment, the scientific community is addressing new challenges at different design levels. One of them constitutes the optimization of energy consumption and the use of various renewable energy sources. In this article technological models of wastewater treatment plant are developed in order to analyze the energy delivered by PV system. The technological models are closely associated to an optimum energy consumption of the plant and the simulation results validate the proposed methodology.
