Laboratory Investigations Applied to Wood Dust Emmited by Electrical Hand-Held Belt Sander

Abstrakt

Abstract

Aim of this paper was to investigate the effects of grit size and wood species on mass concentration and size distribution of wood dust produced by hand-held belt sander. Experimental study was designed as 2x2 full factorial experiments. Experimental parameters and their levels were abrasive grain size (P80, P120) and wood species (European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), Norway spruce (Picea abies)).The mass concentration of emitted wood dust was measured using aerosol monitor (TSI Inc., DustTrak DRX 8533). Sampler head was sited in place representing breathing zone of operator of sander. The results was analysed employing the analysis of variance (ANOVA) with 5% of significance level. Real-time measurements demonstrated that spruce wood generated higher dust concentrations than beech wood due to difference in abrasion durability. Compared to sanding belt with P80 grit size, approximately 16%-32% higher dust concentration was generated when the sanding belt with P120 grit size was used.

Specifics of Management of Enterprise Innovation Activities in the Czech Republic – The Decision-Making Mechanism

Abstrakt

Abstract

The majority of Czech managers are aware that the long-term competitiveness of the company depends primarily on the use of innovative technical solutions and investments in new technologies. Despite awareness of the importance of innovation, many companies do not know how to manage, implement, and evaluate them. Empirical research showed that most innovation firms implement, but do not systematically manage the implementation of innovative projects and the allocation of funds. There is a contradiction between companies’ ability to orientate themselves in the approaches available in the area of innovation management and the existence of a large number of approaches that can be used to address a particular type of innovation problem. A set of innovation concepts has been created to solve those challenges. Practical steps of the decision-making mechanism for selecting innovation concepts have been proposed. The decision-making mechanism is based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and serves primarily for managers of medium and large enterprises.

Mobile Test Stand Validation for Measuring Friction Coefficient of Carrying Rope with Friction Lining

Abstract

The article presents the problem of friction between the rope and the friction liner of a mining hoist very important for the safety of human transport. The friction linings approved for use in the Polish mining industry and their basic mechanical properties are presented. Laboratory and operational methods of friction feedback are described. This article presents an innovative mobile research stand developed at the Department of Mining Mechanization and Robotisation. The mobile test stand validation was presented.

Effect of Temperature of Heat Treatment on Energetic Intensity of Flat Milling of Picea Abies

Abstrakt

Abstract

The paper deals with the research of the influence of thermal modification temperature of spruce wood on the electric energy consumption of its face milling. Samples of spruce wood heat treated at temperatures of 160, 180, 200 and 220°C were milled at the cutting speed of 20, 40 and 60 m.s-1, the feed rate of 6, 10 and 15 m.min-1, the rake angle of 15° with the depth of the cut of 1 mm. The energy consumption was evaluated from the cutting power, which was based on the difference during milling and idle cycle. The analysis of variance showed a decrease in cutting power with an increasing temperature of thermal modification. The average cutting power value is 137.7 W at the native sample and 80.8 W at the sample treated at 220°C. The Duncan’s test of statistical significance has shown that the thermal modification has a statistically significant effect on the cutting power values.

Methodology of Problem Analysis in the Quality Management System with the Use of Systems Approach

Abstrakt

Abstract

In the work there is an innovative methodology of problem analysis presented in the quality management system with the use of systems approach. The methodology serves for determination of action mechanism of unfavorable phenomena occurring in the systems and for explaining their causes. There are assumptions of the elaborated methodology described. For the first time there are the rules of systems thinking used for the analysis of unfavorable phenomena and the system archetypes were applied. Special attention is paid to appropriate presentation of the examined situation in a perspective of systems thinking as well as correct selection of systems archetype. There is a need emphasized concerning examining the situation with the inclusion of numerous variables and necessity to reach to the primary causes of the analyzed phenomena. The elaborated methodology was proceeded to validation on the basis of two threats described by different systems archetypes. There are schemes presented which feature the action mechanism of unfavorable phenomena. The confirmation of methodology in practice proved its application possibilities. Finally, the elaborated methodology was subject to analysis. The discussion of its possibilities and limitation was also conducted.

Cost of Mining Coal as an Element of Multi-Criteria Assessment Using the Development Measure – A Case Study

Abstract

The paper presents the possibilities of applying one of the multi-criteria assessment methods (the development measure method) in the processes of multi-variant design of technical and organizational solutions on the example of selecting equipment for a newly designed mine working in a hard coal mine. Using the case study, the authors proposed an alternative solution for decision-making problems in mining companies in relation to solutions based solely on unit costs of coal mining. The case study is preceded by the presentation of general principles regarding cost accounting in mining companies as well as the use of multi-criteria assessments.

The Comparing of the Selected Temperature Sensors Compatible with the Arduino Platform

Abstrakt

Abstract

One of the most frequently measured quantity is temperature, which is also one of the most important physical quantities. Temperature has influence on the almost all states and processes in the nature as well as in technique. A wide range of temperature sensors is currently available on the market. They use different measurement principles and exist in many designs. According to the location of the sensing element in the measured environment, they are divided into two main groups: contact and non-contact. Further, we can divide the temperature sensors according to the physical principle on which they work. The article deals with the analysis and comparison of selected Arduino-compatible contact temperature sensors. The temperature measurement of machine functional nodes and its diagnostics are part of maintenance and engineering diagnostics. At present, NC and CNC machine diagnostics are an important trend in machine condition monitoring and machine status prediction to maintain production quality. Machine status monitoring allows reducing of machine service costs as well as maintaining the high production quality.

The Influence of Chemical Composition of Tough-to-Machine Steels on Grinding Technologies

Abstrakt

Abstract

The main purpose of processing of tough-to-machine materials is improving of cutting process of steels with different physicochemical properties and alloying by means of various chemical elements in combination with heat treatment. Producing of high quality surface layers depends on properties of material used to make details, that is why reasons of tough machining were identified: influence of chemical composition and resulting structure. The studies of grinding of tough-to-machine materials were undertaken by means of grinding wheels made from synthetic diamonds as they are most resistant and highly-productive. Based on the studies recommendations for using of characteristics of grinding wheels and tough-to machine steel grades are given.

Research on heat processes during grinding allows us to determine patterns showing how cutting speed, detail motion speed, area and action period of contact influence temperature and speed of heat processes in surface layers as well as depth of heating. These patterns also give the chance to show interrelation between temperature and rate of heating and cooling. This gives an opportunity to predict state of structure of surface layer of details made of tough-to-machine steels under different machining conditions reasonably.

Social Perception of Hard Coal Mining in Perspective of Region’s Sustainable Development

Abstrakt

Abstract

This article presents a pilot study on the local community’s social perception regarding coal mines in Upper Silesia. The research was performed in connection with the smog, which was persistent and harmful to residents during the winter months of 2016. The researchers put forward to the local community the following two survey questions: 1. Is the image of coal mines in the eyes of the local community positive or negative? 2. Are coal mines socially responsible and is coal a good energy source? The aim of this article is to indicate the relationship of the local community to the presence of hard coal mines in the neighbourhood and their social role. Also, this work looks to identify the nuisances perceived by the inhabitants of the examined region about mining enterprises and whether these burdens should result in abandonment of hard coal mining. Pilot studies were conducted with the use of a diagnostic survey. The study was carried out in January 2017 on a sample of 267 people, comprising Silesian University of Technology students residing in Upper Silesia. An environmental survey technique was used. The researchers hypothesise that the image of mining and coal as a fuel for the local community is negative and the mines are not socially responsible enterprises. This research shows that the operation of mines is essential for society and its stability as it affects economic, social and energy safety. A large proportion of the respondents defined the image of mining as positive (108 people), but 76 people indicated that the image was rather negative. Most respondents pointed to the benefits of the mine’s operation. Opinions on social responsibility were divided, and most respondents failed to provide concrete examples of social engagement, so the first hypothesis was partly confirmed. Although the respondents pointed to various nuisances resulting from the mining companies operating in their environment, they also recognised significant social aspects related to employability and access to relatively cheap fuel. However, they do not realise the social involvement of mines, which is one of the conditions of sustainable development. Pilot studies allowed for the initial identification of problems and verification of the research tool utilised in this study.

Complex Evaluation of Safety Culture Determinants in Manufacturing Companies in Slovakia

Abstrakt

Abstract

The paper addresses complex evaluation of safety culture in Slovak manufacturing enterprises by utilizing specific determinants. To accommodate conditions of enterprises in Slovakia, a specific research method was developed for the study of safety culture, which can also be used for manufacturing and non-manufacturing enterprises. We have selected the questionnaire method. Due to the scope of the research, we have defined ten determinants, which form the basis for evaluation of safety culture elements. When determining the level of the specific ten determinants of safety culture, we studied interdependence between the enterprise’s industry, its size (small, medium, large) and points assigned to each determinant. The results of the study are evaluated using a 3D point graph. The discussion shows parts that were evaluated the highest or lowest and outlines suggested approaches to improve the current state.
