<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

<p>In the current study, 65 <italic>Vibrio</italic> spp. were isolated from the Monastir lagoon water, were characterized phenotypically and genotypically. In addition, we looked for the presence of three <italic>Vibrio parahaemolyticus</italic> virulence genes (<italic>tlh</italic>, <italic>trh</italic> and <italic>tdh</italic>) and ten <italic>Vibrio cholerae</italic> virulence genes (<italic>ctx</italic>A, <italic>vpi</italic>, <italic>zot</italic>, <italic>ace</italic>, <italic>tox</italic>R, <italic>tox</italic>T, <italic>tos</italic>S, <italic>tox</italic>RS, <italic>tcp</italic>A and <italic>cp</italic>P). We also investigated the antibiotic susceptibilities and the adherence ability of the identified strains to abiotic material and to biotic surfaces. The cytotoxicity activity against HeLa and Vero cell lines were also carried out for all tested strains. All <italic>Vibrio</italic> isolates were identified to the species level and produced several hydrolytic exoenzymes. The results also revealed that all strains were expressing high rates of resistance to tested antibiotics. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values showed that tetracycline and chloramphenicol were the most effective antibiotics against the tested bacteria. <italic>Vibrio alginolyticus</italic> and <italic>V. cholerae</italic> species were the most adhesive strains to both biotic and abiotic surfaces. Besides, <italic>V. alginolyticus</italic> isolates has the high levels of recombination of genes encoding <italic>V. cholerae</italic> and <italic>V. parahaemolyticus</italic> virulence factors. <italic>In vitro</italic> cytotoxic activities of several <italic>Vibrio</italic> extracellular product were also observed among HeLa and Vero cells.</p>
