<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p> The aim of this paper is to analyse women’s state in Arundhati Roy’s The <italic>God of Small Things </italic>and Anita Desai’s <italic>Clear Light of Day</italic>. In both novels, women struggle with the world they live in because of their womanhood. Their situation can be discussed briefly in terms of Gayatri Spivak’s famous essay, “Can the Subaltern Speak?”</p></abstract>
