<abstract xml:lang="en" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">The paper describes the bioassay-guided isolation, structure elucidation and anticancer evaluation of five flavonoids (-)-liquiritigenin (<bold>1</bold>), (-)-neoliquiritin (<bold>2</bold>), isoliquiritigenin (<bold>3</bold>), isoliquiritin (<bold>4</bold>) and formononetin (<bold>5</bold>) from the twigs of <italic>Jacaranda obtusifolia</italic> H. B. K. ssp. <italic>rhombifolia</italic> (G. F. W. Meijer) Gentry. The structures were elucidated based on 1H, 13C NMR, comprehensive 2D NMR, MS analyses and comparison with previously reported spectral data. Compounds <bold>1</bold> and <bold>3</bold> were demonstrated to be inhibitory <italic>in vitro</italic> against NCI-H187 (small cell lung cancer) with <italic>IC</italic>50 values of 30.1 and 16.6 μg mL-1, respectively. The isolates were non-cytotoxic to Vero cells (African green monkey kidney).</abstract>
