Welcome to the IZA Journal of Labor Policy. The IZA Journal of Labor Policy publishes scientific articles that are relevant for policy-making. This refers to papers addressing the impact of institutional settings and policy interventions on labor market outcomes, both from a theoretical as well as from an empirical point of view. In addition, the IZA Journal of Labor Policy publishes literature reviews and meta-analyses that synthesize existing research on policy relevant issues.
What makes the IZA Journal of Labor Policy distinct from the vast majority of existing journals in economics is its focus on policy relevance rather than scientific innovation. We even welcome empirical replications as long as they constructively build upon existing findings. We expect papers that carefully address the causal identification of effects, but we do not regard statistical significance of empirical findings as a criterion for paper selection.
Subject areas include evaluation of labor market programs and educational or other interventions that affect labor market outcomes, analysis of the relationship between institutions and labor market outcomes, and all public policy aspects of labor, education, welfare and related social policies, and retirement, including effective policy implementation.
The IZA Journal of Labor Policy is central to IZA’s mission of supporting informed and research-based labor policy debates around the world. We want to make a serious contribution to a scientifically grounded understanding of what works when and how.

The IZA Journal of Labor Policy has been founded in 2012. All back issues remain fully accessible through the websites of our first publishing partner SpringerOpen (izajolp.springeropen.com).

All articles published by the IZA Journal of Labor Policy are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately upon publication, without subscription charges or registration barriers.
Open access publication fees and waivers
The IZA Open Access Journal Series allows free worldwide access to your published article. This is not without costs for article processing and hosting at perpetuity. However, please note that the IZA Journal of Labor Policy explicitly does not expect any author to pay publication fees from her/his personal funds. Nor do we charge any submission fees.
Instead the IZA Open Access Journals aim at exploiting available funds at research institutions and third-party resources (e.g. external funding of research projects and publications). A continuously rising number of research institutions in Economics offer open access funds.
Please check with your employer or research funding institution whether funds exist to finance publication of your article and let us know. If your article is accepted for publication, the Open Access Publication Fee will then be €975/$1105.
During submission the Editorial Manager will giude you through the financing options. If no other funds exist, the IZA Journal of Labor Policy will fully cover all publication costs.

IZA Journal of Labor Policy operates a double-blind peer-review system, where the reviewers are not aware of the names and affiliations of the authors and the reviewer reports provided to authors are anonymous Publication of research articles by IZA Journal of Labor Policy is dependent primarily on their scientific validity and coherence as judged by our external expert editors and/or peer reviewers, who will also assess whether the writing is comprehensible and whether the work represents a useful contribution to the field.
Submitted manuscripts will generally be reviewed by two to three experts who will be asked to evaluate whether the manuscript is scientifically sound and coherent, whether it duplicates already published work, and whether or not the manuscript is sufficiently clear for publication. Reviewers will also be asked to indicate how interesting and significant the research is. The Editors will reach a decision based on these reports and, where necessary, they will consult with members of the Editorial Board.
Editorial policies
All manuscripts submitted to IZA Journal of Labor Policy should adhere to Sciendo's editorial policies.
Once your article is accepted, it will be processed by production and published shortly afterwards. In some cases, articles may be held for a short period of time prior to publication. If you have any concerns or particular requirements please contact the Journal.
Sciendo remains neutral with regard to jurisdictional claims in published maps and institutional affiliations.
