Manuscript Submission

Submission of a manuscript implies assurance: that you are submitting your original work, that you have the rights in the work, that the content has not been previously published in form or in substance, that the manuscript itself has not already been published elsewhere and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities – tacitly or explicitly – at the institution where the work has been carried out, and that you have obtained and can supply all necessary permissions for the reproduction of any copyright works not owned by you. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.

Please refer to the Guidelines for Authors for more detailed information. Please read the guidelines before you prepare your submission. Be aware that submissions not conforming to these guidelines may be returned to authors for correction.

Disclosure and conflicts of interest: All authors must declare any financial or other substantial conflicts of interest that could be assumed to have an effect on the results or their interpretation in the manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed. For other ethical issues please consult the document “Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement” on HoST’s website.

Permissions

It is the author’s responsibility to secure any necessary permissions for publication.

Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to get permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.

Peer Review Process Description

HoST publishes articles, book reviews and distinguished lectures that explore the cultural, social and political dimensions of science, technology, and medicine (STM) in history across the world.

HoST publishes the following article types:

  • Full Papers (original research work that are part of a Thematic Dossier or that are spontaneously submitted to be included in the Varia section);
  • Works in Progress (spontaneously submitted original research work which is in progress and being carried out by graduate students);
  • Distinguished Lectures (papers presented at CIUHCT’s annual distinguished lectures);
  • Book Reviews (for details on the submission of Book Reviews, please see the dedicated section in the Guidelines for Authors).

The journal uses a double-blind peer review process for its Full Papers and Works in Progress, which means that neither the author nor reviewers know each other’s identity throughout the review process. The process proceeds in the following stages:

  1. Authors submit their paper to the chief editor of HoST (chiefeditor@johost.eu) or, in the case of papers that are part of a Thematic Dossier, to the guest editors, and receive an email confirming receipt of the manuscript.
  2. The Editorial Board reviews the submission to ensure it meets the requirements of the Guidelines for Authors and that it fits within the aims and scope of the journal. Articles that fail to meet these requirements are desk rejected.
  3. When a submission meets these requirements and the Editorial Board decides it warrants peer review, it is assigned to a member of the Editorial Board, who will be the primary editor, and the author is informed of this preliminary decision. The primary editor may ask the author to make minor changes, namely, to remove any identifying information, before proceeding with the review.
  4. Papers which are selected for review are sent out to two potential reviewers that are experts on the topic of the paper or a related field. In the case of relevant differences between the evaluations of the two reviewers, the primary editor will consult a third reviewer. Authors may propose a list of potential reviewers for their submission. Nevertheless, this will be seen as nothing more than a suggestion, and the ultimate selection of the reviewers is the sole decision of the members of the Editorial Board. Authors may also indicate experts on the topic of their submission with whom they have a potential conflict of interest and that thus should not be considered for the review of their manuscript. The average review time between submission and decision is 6-8 months. 5. The primary editor will send the reader reports to the author and convey one of three preliminary decisions: ‘Accept with Minor Changes’, ‘Accept with Major Changes ‘or ‘Reject’.
  5. The primary editor will send the reader reports to the author and convey one of three preliminary decisions: ‘Accept with Minor Changes’, ‘Accept with Major Changes ‘or ‘Reject’.
  6. Authors of papers with ‘Accept with Minor Changes’ and ‘Accept with Major Changes’ are given a reasonable amount of time to revise their papers according to the reviewers’ comments and suggestions and are expected to provide a letter answering those comments and suggestions. The revised version and the letter will be submitted to the primary editor.
  7. The primary editor will examine the revised version and the letter to ensure all relevant questions have been addressed. The revised version may also be sent out to at least one of the earlier reviewers or to a third reviewer, who may ask for further revisions or accept it as is. Once further revisions are made, the primary editor will make a final decision and inform the author.
  8. Once a paper is accepted, it will be sent to the Chief Editor to coordinate copy-editing. The median time between acceptance and publication is 4-6 months.
