<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>The variation of the widely spread <italic>Cortinarius saniosus</italic> is described with respect to morphological, ecological and molecular characteristics. <italic>C. chrysomallus</italic> D. Lamoure and <italic>C. aureomarginatus</italic> P.D. Orton are regarded as synonymous with C. saniosus based on morphological and molecular data. A new closely related species <italic>C. aureovelatus</italic> Bendiksen, K. Bendiksen &amp; H. Lindstr., growing in coniferous and mountain birch forests, is described. A taxonomical and nomenclatural treatment of the complex, based upon present knowledge, is proposed.</p></abstract>
