<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
A small increase in the relative humidity in the air in a coal deposit can cause a 1% increase in the moisture content of the deposit resulting in the probability of spontaneous ignition. By depositing the freshly extracted coal over the coal already in the deposit, there is a direct contact between the two surfaces that have different characteristics in terms of physical and chemical properties, so that the latter acts as a primer.
The coal with a higher temperature gives up the excess temperature to the coal with a lower temperature, thus initiating the formation of self-heating nuclei followed by self-ignition ones. The phenomenon is easy to observe in the colder periods of the season and especially usually after rain, when the vapors resulting from the exchange of temperature between the two types of coal are released into the atmosphere.
The common cause is the movement of water vapor through the deposit correlated with the adsorption on the coal granules. The heat of condensation of vapor at storage temperature is about 580 cal./gram of water. Condensing the amount of water required to increase the content from 3% of the weight of the coal to 4% leads to an increase in the temperature of the coal by more than 170C. This increase in temperature is sufficient to increase the oxidation rate by 5 times.

Revista Minelor/Mining Revue is a quarterly publication belonging to the UNIVERSITY OF PETROȘANI, ROMANIA, which publishes original articles on various aspects of the mining field. All articles must be sent electronically via email to <A href="mailto:mining-revue@upet.ro">mining-revue@upet.ro</A> The paper must be written in English, in MS-Word 2003 format or a newer one, according to the writing requirements. For this, please use the existing template. All articles will be reviewed by two independent reviewers, who come/work at a scientific institution other than the author’s/authors’, without a conflict of interest between the author/authors and reviewers. The review will be based on a review form, which will include the reviewer’s observations and conclusions regarding the paper being reviewed. The names of the reviewers will not be disclosed but, when an issue is published, a list of the reviewers who have reviewed the articles in that issue will be attached. No fees are charged for the processing of the articles and for publication. <DIV align=left> Revista Minelor/Mining Revue (MinRv), ISSN-L 1220-2053/ISSN 2247-8590, is an official journal of the University of Petrosani, Romania, published quarterly both printed and online. It is an international open-access, peer-reviewed journal focusing on the development and exchange of scientific and technical aspects (novelties) in the broad field of mining sciences. All published research articles in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and review by independent experts.
