<sec><h3>Background and objectives</h3>
<p>Including parents of preterm infants in family-centered care processes in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) requires nurses to have a basic understanding of need-based educational interventions. This paper aims to describe nurses’ subjective views of parents’ education and support needs.</p>

<sec><h3>Method</h3>
<p>A qualitative study consisting of six semi-structured interviews was conducted to analyze the subjective perspectives of nurses providing counseling to parents with premature children. The interview material was subjected to content analysis.</p>

<sec><h3>Results</h3>
<p>Three main themes were addressed by participating nurses: general and individual parental needs, changes in needs over time, as well as factors that facilitate or hinder nursing care needs assessments. Nurses’ assessment of parental needs is essentially based on their subjective perceptions and lacks systematic procedures. Parent counsellors assume discrepancies between their subjective needs assessment and parents’ actual needs. Participating nurses believed that the central function of their counseling work was to provide continuous, consistent, and coherent communication support to parents throughout the entire duration of their premature infants’ inpatient stay.</p>

<sec><h3>Conclusion</h3>
<p>Integrated care concepts in the NICU must actively involve all professional stakeholders in establishing family-centered care. Apart from their subjective professional assessment, nurses should primarily rely on standardized tools to identify parental needs. Such comprehensive needs assessments can ensure a continuous, timely response to parents’ actual needs through educational interventions that offer professional, effective support for parental coping and family well-being.</p>

<p>Der Einbezug von Eltern frühgeborener Kinder in familienzentrierte Versorgungsprozesse in der neonatologischen Intensivversorgung (NICU) erfordert von Pflegenden ein grundlegendes Verständnis für die Bedarfsorientierung edukativer Interventionen. Ziel dieses Beitrages ist es daher, subjektive Sichtweisen von Pflegefachpersonen auf Unterstützungsbedarfe und Bedürfnisse von Eltern zu beschreiben.</p>

<sec><h3>Methode</h3>
<p>In einer qualitativen Untersuchung wurden zur Analyse subjektiver Sichtweisen sechs leitfadengestützte Interviews mit Pflegenden, die als Elternberaterinnen für Familien mit frühgeborenen Kindern tätig sind, durchgeführt und inhaltsanalytisch ausgewertet.</p>

<sec><h3>Ergebnisse</h3>
<p>Allgemeine und individuelle elterliche Bedarfe, zeitliche Veränderungen der Bedarfe sowie Gelingensfaktoren und hemmende Bedingungen für pflegerische Bedarfsermittlungen werden dargestellt. Sie basieren wesentlich auf subjektiven Wahrnehmungen und nicht auf systematischen Vorgehensweisen in der Bedarfserhebung. Elternberaterinnen vermuten Diskrepanzen zwischen ihrer Einschätzung der Bedarfe und aktuellen elterlichen Bedürfnissen. Die zentrale Bedeutung ihres edukativen Beratungsangebotes verstehen sie in der kontinuierlichen Bereitstellung eines „roten Fadens“ für Eltern über die gesamte Zeit des stationären Aufenthaltes der Frühgeborenen.</p>

<sec><h3>Schlussfolgerung</h3>
<p>Integrierte Versorgungskonzepte in der NICU müssen alle beteiligten Berufsgruppen aktiv bei der Etablierung einer familienzentrierten Pflege einbeziehen. Pflegende sollten elterliche Bedarfe mit standardisierten Assessments erheben. Ergänzt durch subjektive Einschätzungen können die so erhobenen Bedarfe als Grundlage für die kontinuierliche Bereitstellung edukativer Interventionen genutzt werden, um tatsächliche Bedürfnisse rechtzeitig zu beantworten und elterliche Bewältigungsstrategien sowie das familiäre Wohlbefinden zu fördern.</p>
