<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

<p>The aim of the study was to compare the <italic>in vitro </italic>antibacterial activity of leaf extracts obtained from various <italic>Ficus </italic>species against four bacterial strains of fish pathogens (<italic>Serratia liquefaciens</italic>, <italic>Yersinia ruckeri</italic>, <italic>Pseudomonas fluorescens</italic>, <italic>Shewanella putrefaciens</italic>). <italic>In vitro </italic>tests for antibacterial activity assessment revealed that various <italic>Ficus </italic>species have notable antibacterial efficacy. The six most effective <italic>Ficus </italic>plants against <italic>S. liquefaciens </italic>that caused a zone of inhibition of at least 15 mm were <italic>F. lingua</italic>, <italic>F. erecta</italic>, <italic>F. rubiginosa</italic>, <italic>F. tinctoria</italic>, <italic>F. sur</italic>, and <italic>F. aspera</italic>. The maximum antimicrobial activity against the <italic>Y. ruckeri </italic>strain was observed for ethanolic extracts of <italic>F. hederacea</italic>, <italic>F. formosana</italic>, and <italic>F. hispida</italic>. Our results also demonstrated that the <italic>Pseudomonas fluorescens </italic>strain exhibited high susceptibility to ethanolic extracts derived from 20 plants (the mean value of inhibition zone diameters (IZD) was more than 15 mm). <italic>F. erecta</italic>, <italic>F. sur</italic>, and <italic>F. virens </italic>extracts were more effective against <italic>P. fluorescens. </italic>The <italic>Shewanella putrefaciens </italic>strain revealed a high level of susceptibility to ethanolic extracts derived from the leaves of 32 species (the highest value of the IZDs was observed for <italic>F. erecta</italic>). The data presented in the current study indicated that ethanolic extracts derived from leaves of various <italic>Ficus </italic>species are a promising alternative to the use of antibiotics and chemotherapeutics in controlling infections caused by the <italic>Serratia liquefaciens</italic>, <italic>Yersinia ruckeri</italic>, <italic>Pseudomonas fluorescens</italic>, and <italic>Shewanella putrefaciens </italic>strains.</p>
