In lower altitudes of Austria, <italic>Juniperus communis</italic> formations of habitat type 5130 of Annex I of the Habitats Directive are only very rarely preserved relicts of former extensive grazing and are nowadays largely forested or have disappeared for other reasons. Only seven currently existing Natura 2000 sites mention and protect this habitat in the total extent of less than 15 ha indicated nationwide, covering only a small fraction of the occurrences that are completely insufficiently known even 25 years after Austria‘s accession to the EU. FFH habitat type mapping carried out in recent years (in particular N<sc>adler</sc> &amp; H<sc>aug</sc> 2018b) shows that there is also a second, even more vital focus of type occurrences in the Alpine region, namely in the high montane to subalpine altitudinal zones with juniper in its low-growing high altitude form (Subspecies <italic>nana</italic> according to Austrian terminology). Although there have always been sufficient interpretation aids identifying these high altitude occurrences, they have so far not been taken into account in the reporting system according to Article 17 of the Habitats Directive nor in the designation of Natura 2000 protected areas for habitat type 5130. This overview is intended to highlight this problem and improve the level of information.
There is a need for official action with regard to the inclusion of LRT 5130 as a protected property in existing Natura 2000 sites, with regard to the designation of significantly larger areas in existing protected areas and with regard to Natura 2000 renominations to be made in high altitude areas; all this has to be connected with efforts to improve the conservation status of this protected property, which must be significantly intensified.
The most important causes of endangerment are the abandonment of grassland use and eutrophication, which accelerates the succession to forest, on the one hand, and large-scale clearing in the form of woodland and alpine pasture milling, on the other.

Two species (<italic>Hieracium sibaricum, H. pillii</italic>) and 3 subspecies (<italic>H. diaphanoides</italic> subsp. <italic>semiorbiculare</italic>, <italic>H. glaucinum</italic> subsp. <italic>semibasalticum</italic>, <italic>H. glaucinum</italic> subsp. <italic>domimontis</italic>) are described as new for science from the Burgenland (Austria).

Neue <italic>Hieracium</italic>-Taxa aus dem Burgenland (Österreich)

From 2016 to 2018 a comprehensive mapping of hawkweeds (<italic>Hieracium</italic> s. str., <italic>Pilosella</italic> and <italic>Chlorocrepis</italic>) accompanied by intensive activities in collecting of herbarium specimens was carried out in the Burgenland (Austria). Additionally, records cited in literature and obtained by revision work in several European herbaria were added to our database. As a result, an annnotated list of hawkweeds species in Burgenland country is presented. It is based on almost 2900 datasets, of which nearly 2700 are documented by herbarium specimens. In additition to <italic>Chlorocrepis staticifolia</italic> the list includes 22 species of the genus <italic>Hieracium</italic> with 64 subspecies and 32 species of the genus <italic>Pilosella</italic> with five subspecies. All of them are documented by herbarium specimens. In addition, 31 subspecies from literature are cited in the text. Eight species of the genus <italic>Hieracium</italic> (<italic>H. diaphanoides, H. glaucinum, H. neostenophyllum, H. pillii, H. pseudobifidum, H. rotundatum, H. sibaricum, H. transylvanicum</italic>) and eight species of the genus <italic>Pilosella</italic> (<italic>P. acrothyrsa, P. calodon, P. erythrochrista,P. flagellaris, P. heterodoxa, P. koernickeana, P. tubulata</italic> and <italic>P. ziziana</italic>) were detected for the first time in Burgenland. Seven species, mentioned in the botanical literature (<italic>H. clusii</italic>, <italic>H. saxatile</italic>, <italic>H. schmidtii</italic>, <italic>H. subramosum</italic>, <italic>P. dubia</italic>, <italic>P. onegensis, Schlagintweitia intybacea</italic>) are classified as wrong or dubious information. The name of <italic>H. brevifolium</italic> subsp. <italic>brachysteleon</italic> is validated, the name of <italic>H. pilosellinum</italic> subsp. <italic>purbachense</italic> is lectotypified. Six new combinations are made: <italic>H. rotundatum</italic> subsp. <italic>lancifolium</italic>, <italic>H. rotundatum</italic> subsp. <italic>leptocephaloides</italic>, <italic>H. rotundatum</italic> subsp. <italic>platyrhombum</italic>, <italic>H. rotundatum</italic> subsp. <italic>pleiophyllopsis</italic>, <italic>H. rotundatum</italic> subsp. <italic>praecurrens</italic>, <italic>H. rotundatum</italic> subsp. <italic>subserratifolium</italic>.

<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
<italic>Euonymus latifolius</italic> in the Bohemian Massif – In the present study, scattered and mainly previously unpublished distribution data of <italic>Euonymus latifolius</italic> for the Bohemian Massif are aggregated and presented in tabular and graphical form. In Lower Austria, the otherwise pre- to perialpine distribution pattern extends northwards to the area of the Bohemian Massif, becomes isolated and represents the European northern range edge of autochthonous occurrences with an exposed range outpost in the Lower Austrian Freiwald region. So far there is evidence from 10 quadrants. Although siliceous growth sites are also colonized, the ecological assemblage remains species-typical and includes deciduous forests, but also copses. The discussion is mainly devoted to the topics of floristic status, cultivation and dispersal ecology. Contradictions in the reference material concerning range and status data are pointed out.

<italic>Euonymus latifolius</italic> im Böhmischen Massiv

In the area around Molln (district Kirchdorf an der Krems) in Upper Austria, “Bergwiesn”, a private association with the objective of maintaining the cultivated landscape, takes care of more than 30 meadows in difficult and steep terrain. By annual mowing, they aim to keep the plots clear of encroachment and to remove nutrients. In the present study, 26 of those meadows were examined, in order to find out whether their vegetation matches that of nutrient-poor grassland on calcareous soil and whether the success of the maintenance measures can be statistically confirmed. Additionally, literature research was conducted on the feed quality of these meadows. The results show that more than a third of the plots match the vegetation of nutrient-poor grassland on calcareous soil, while the rest can be categorised as fertilised meadows. Yet, all meadows show key species of both vegetation types, and by continuous nutrient removal, fertilised meadows could be transformed into nutrient-poor grassland. Therefore, appropriate measures can contribute to the development of meagre meadows, which are particularly valuable in nature conservation terms. The statistical analysis yields no significant results. Looking at the feed value through conventional parameters, these meadows need to be given a rather low rating. Still, as an addition to conventional feed and for alternative uses (e.g. wellness purposes), hay from meagre meadows harbours some potential.

Naturschutzfachliche Bewertung der Pflegemaßnahmen von Wiesen auf Steilflächen in Molln (Oberösterreich)

Larch pastures are use-stabilized features of alpine cultural landscapes, which are characterized by a two-layer structure made of a loose screen of European larch (<italic>Larix decidua</italic>) with pastures underneath. As a product of rural alpine farming, larch pastures are widespread in the traditional use systems on both siliceous and carbonate subsoils in the high montane-subalpine altitudinal zone of the Alps (cf. M<sc>ayer</sc> 1974; 31f.). The combination of geology and cultivation shows a remarkable floristic diversity, especially in the case of formations over carbonate substrates. Rationalizations within alpine farming since the decades after the Second World War - and again accelerating within the past 20 years - promote dynamic changes within the vegetation composition of many larch pastures. The paper reconstructs the vegetation dynamics on larch pastures on carbonate under the influence of decline in use and abandonment using examples in Totes Gebirge, Dachstein massif and Osterhorn group. Via the tabular comparison of phytosociological vegetation recordings from eleven alpine pastures that are currently managed at various levels of intensity or were abandoned at different times, the directions and stages of dynamics are traced and the development of the number of species is examined.

Lärchweiden im Toten Gebirge, Dachsteingebiet und der Osterhorngruppe: Struktur und Dynamiken ihrer Vegetation im Gefolge von Rücknahme und Aufgabe der Nutzung

In this article we present the new species <italic>Crocus cobbii</italic> from the northwestern part of the Iberian Peninsula. The definition of <italic>Crocus cobbii</italic> is based on molecular and detailed morphological findings, including the molecular examination and morphological revision of its four relatives, <italic>C. nudiflorus</italic>, <italic>C. clusii</italic>, <italic>C. salzmannii</italic>, and <italic>C. serotinus</italic>. An epitypfication for <italic>C. serotinus</italic> was done and a lectotype for <italic>C. nudiflorus</italic> designated. In addition, our molecular data assign the origin of the English <italic>C. nudiflorus</italic>, from which the plant was originally described, to the eastern Pyrenees.

<italic>Crocus cobbii</italic> K<sc>erndorff</sc>, P<sc>asche</sc> &amp; H<sc>arpke</sc> species nova (Liliiflorae, Iridaceae) and its relatives

<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
The survey deals with the position of the silver fir (<italic>Abies alba</italic>) within the mixed mountain forests of Upper Austria‘s Mühlviertel. With a focus at sea heights between 500 and 900 m, the Mühlviertel low mountain range is one of the core areas of the Central European fir area (cf. D<sc>unzendorfer</sc> 1988, W<sc>agner</sc> 1989). On the basis of an evaluation of existing plant-sociological recording material, supplemented by new recordings by the author, the sociological and local spectrum of the fir is worked out using a synthetic overview of the forest vegetation of the Mühlviertel and a systematic classification of the societies with the participation of Fir is made. It was possible to differentiate between six societies in which the fir tree appears, which can be assigned to three different syntaxonomic units at association level - the <italic>Fagion sylvaticae</italic>, the <italic>Dicrano-Pinion</italic> and the <italic>Abieti-Piceion</italic>. On the basis of characteristics of the structure of the stands as well as their distribution, it is shown that in addition to the natural and local conditions, a plenter-shaped management has a decisive influence on the occurrence of the fir. This is further investigated on the basis of a detailed study on farmed plenter forests, the so-called „Julbacher plenter forests“
