<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>Humans have always been and still are fascinated by the elusive phenomenon of soul and have devised various approaches to interpret it and attribute different names to it; depending on which part, which religion, which tribe and which sect of the world they belong to. Theologians to philosophers to spiritual thinkers to literary authors and critics to scientists—all seem to be researching and explaining its nature and place in the universal scheme of things. Interestingly, there is a unanimity among all, regarding the eternity and indestructibility of soul. The ancient Hindu scripture, <italic>Bhagavad Gita</italic> establishes soul (<italic>Jivatma</italic>) as a triad of Self, Nature (<italic>Prakriti</italic>: material reality) and God (<italic>Parmeshvara</italic>). The inner self is Soul which bears reflections of both, the physical nature and God. Malleable in ignorance, it identifies with the sense-perception dominated body but once realising its true nature, it is capable of governing the body and its actions. With the support mechanisms and persistence, it traverses across individual body consciousness to universal consciousness. This article strives to make a hermeneutic study of this metaphysical text; inquiring how awareness of the duality of nature; transient and permanent, triggers a gradual process of evolution, leading to a complete transformation when a soul resides within a body as a unifying factor; not for exploiting it or others or vice versa but for bringing about universal harmony.</abstract>

Exploring Soul, Nature, and God. A Triad in <italic>Bhagavad gita</italic>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title> I argue that the bishop of Hippo taught sola fide, declarative justification, and the divine acceptance of sinners based on faith alone although he presented these pre-Reformational thoughts with strong emphasis on the necessity of growth in holiness (sanctification). Victorinus and Ambrosiaster already taught a Reformational doctrine of justification prior to Augustine in the fourthcentury Latin Christianity. Therefore, the argument that sola fide and justification as an event did not exist before the sixteenth-century Reformation, and these thoughts were foreign to Augustine is not tenable. For Augustine, justification includes imputed righteousness by Christ’s work, which can be appreciated by faith alone and inherent righteousness assisted by the Holy Spirit at the same time of forgiveness in justification. Nonetheless, the sole ground of the divine acceptance does not depend on inherent righteousness, which is real and to increase. The salvation of the confessing thief and the remaining sinfulness of humanity after justification show Augustine that faith alone is the ground of God’s acceptance of sinners. Augustine’s relatively less frequent discussion of sola fide and declarative justification may be due to his need to reject the antinomian abusers who appealed to the Pauline understanding of justification even when they do not have any intentional commitment to holiness after their confessions. Augustine’s teaching on double righteousness shows considerable theological affinity with Bucer and Calvin who are accustomed to speak of justification in terms of double righteousness. Following Augustine, both Bucer and Calvin speak of the inseparability and simultaneity of justification and sanctification. Like Augustine, Bucer also maintains a conceptual, not categorical, distinction between the two graces of God in their doctrines of justification.</abstract>

Divine Acceptance of Sinners: Augustine’S Doctrine of Justification

<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
This study casts light on how the issue of childlessness is portrayed in the Bible. The discussion begins with a commentary on Michal’s story, which provides the foundation for further reflection on how childlessness was dealt with in the biblical world, especially in the situations where no miraculous divine solutions were provided. Several humanly devised solutions, acceptable and practiced in the ancient world are presented. The last part of the paper focuses on the more eschatological view of human existence provided in the New Testament, showing that childlessness is a form of suffering included in the promise of redemption brought about by the inauguration of God’s kingdom. As such the response of the redeemed community is to be characterized by love and compassion.

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title> The simultaneous globalization and demographic shift of the Church to the Global South has produced an unprecedented climate for theological work. Pastors and theologians are confronted with the task of developing theological systems that are faithful to the authoritative standard of Scripture, tailored to the increasingly complex needs of their local contexts, and sensitive to the ongoing dialogue of other leaders around the globe. In light of the increasing cross-cultural dialogue among scholars and pastors within a globalized church and a corresponding desire to encourage greater ‘diasporadic consciousness’ therein, this article presents the biblical-theological shepherd-leader motif as a primary metaphor for understanding the distinct nature and role of pastoral leadership. This article presents shepherd leadership as a robust metaphor of pastoral leadership by reviewing Scripture’s use of the metaphor and recent significant works on the subject. In the second section of the article, I propose a model profile of the biblical shepherd-leader based upon the insights of the biblical-theological review.</abstract>

<abstract xml:lang="en"><title style='display:none'>Calvin's Doctrine of the Lord's Supper</title>In order to pinpoint its proprium, it is necessary to understand John Calvin’s Eucharistic
theology within the wider context of the intra-Protestant debates of his time. As a second-
generation Reformer, Calvin developed his ideas explicitly in reaction to and as a middle
way between the Lutheran and Swiss Reformed discussions of the 1520’s. To that end this essay
first focuses on the main developments from the Middle Ages onwards, and then presents
Calvin from the perspective of the positions taken up by some of his contemporaries, in particular
Philipp Melanchthon. Next, some representative texts written by Calvin himself are analysed.
Although Calvin’s Eucharistic views were not from the beginning a coherent and unified
doctrine but developed only gradually, they may be described in a systematic-synthetic way.
With respect to the matter of closed, open, and frequent communion, it is observed that for
Calvin a regular celebration is essential to the deepening of the believer’s union with Christ.</abstract>

I explain, in a Bayesian fashion, why this almost certainly did not happen.

<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
This paper examines the criticisms of Protestantism articulated by Romanian Eastern Orthodox theologian Dumitru Staniloae, highlighting over-generalizations in his assessments. Staniloae contends that Protestantism embodies dualism, anthropological pessimism, denigration of the sacraments, and indifference to sin, among other issues. This paper argues that some of these assertions reveal a lack of serious engagement and perhaps comprehension of the diverse range of the Protestant tradition. By scrutinizing Staniloae’s contentions through conversing with neo-Calvinist theologian Herman Bavinck, this paper attempts to demonstrate possible misinterpretations in Staniloae’s evaluations related to Protestant soteriology. In the reverse, the paper also evaluates some of Bavinck’s claims related to Palamist thought. Ultimately, this examination confirms that many of Staniloae’s criticisms of Protestantism are misinformed, just as Bavinck’s criticisms of Palamist thought lack both nuance and depth. By engaging in theological dialogue between these two theologians, this paper hopes to promote a greater appreciation for both traditions and the potential for further dialogue.

Mutual Misunderstandings: Herman Bavinck and Dumitru Staniloae in Dialogue

<abstract>
<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
This essay seeks to examine the distinctive way that Herman Bavinck employs the imitation of Christ within <italic>Reformed Ethics.</italic> The distinctive way in which Bavinck understands and applies the imitation of Christ in his exposition of the commandments is helpfully clarified in conversation with his contemporary, Wilhelm Geesink. Both Bavinck and Geesink penned a <italic>Reformed Ethic</italic> – one remained unpublished and the other posthumously published – in which they share methodological commitments to scripture, the law, and the Reformed tradition’s understanding of the normativity of the law for the Christian life. An analysis of the two thinkers on the first commandment shows, however, that amidst these striking similarities, Bavinck and Geesink differ in their appeal to the imitation of Christ as a guide for the Christian life. Through an examination of Bavinck’s ethical method and both Bavinck and Geesink’s exposition of the first commandment, this essay will highlight the centrality of the imitation of Christ in Bavinck’s ethics as an ethical norm, differentiating his application of the duties of the commandment for the Christian life from his contemporaries.

Imitating Christ: Bavinck’s Application of an Ethical Norm in the First Commandment

<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
This essay examines Herman Bavinck’s doctrine of atonement within his treatment of Christ’s humiliation in volume three of his <italic>Reformed Dogmatics</italic>. Through an investigation of Bavinck’s critiques of key nineteenth century theologians and of Bavinck’s own constructive account of the atonement, I show that Bavinck intended his theology of Christ’s work to serve as a corrective to the dominant approach to the theology of the atonement in his day. Against what he considered one-sided views of Christ’s work, I argue that Bavinck sought to offer an account which emulates Scripture in its multifaceted character. This theology further sought to retrieve and build upon historical Christian theology, most notably that of Anselm and especially the Protestant Reformers, in its focus on Christ’s vicarious satisfaction as the central (though not only) concern of his redeeming action. This exploration of Bavinck’s doctrine of the atonement not only deepens our understanding of Bavinck’s theological method but has relevance for broader studies of nineteenth and early twentieth century conceptualizations of Christ’s person and work and shows Bavinck’s attractiveness for contemporary constructive approaches to the atonement.

The Multifaceted Work of Christ: Herman Bavinck’s Doctrine of Atonement as Both Corrective and Retrieval

<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
Engaging recent scholarship on Bavinck’s revitalization of the <italic>vestigia trinitatis</italic> and its connection to the organic motif, this essay identifies and examines two aspects of Bavinck’s account that remain underdeveloped with scholarship on this topic. First, it explores the lingering importance triads within Bavinck’s account of the <italic>vestigia.</italic> Bavinck may have developed a primarily non-numerical account of the <italic>vestigia</italic>, but he still acknowledges the place of triadic analogies, especially in humanity. Second, it contextualizes Bavinck’s appropriation of the <italic>vestigia</italic> within his understanding of creation as relative, divine, self-communication in order to illuminate how creation can bear the imprint of the Trinity even as the Trinity remains unlike anything in creation. Much work has been done on Bavinck’s triniform account of creation and his organic cosmology, but these accounts can often miss or gloss over the doctrines that Bavinck utilizes to carefully guards against a direct correlation between God and creation.

Trinity and Creation: Bavinck on the <italic>Vestigia Trinitatis</italic>

<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
This article introduces the theology of a neglected figure in the Dutch Reformed (<italic>Gereformeerde</italic>) tradition of the nineteenth century: Jan Bavinck (1826-1909), the father of Herman Bavinck (1854-1921). The approach to his theology is done by describing his definition of piety (<italic>vroomheid</italic> or <italic>godzaligheid</italic>), a fundamental subject within the Reformed tradition. The relevance of piety is briefly described in the theology of John Calvin (1509-64) and the <italic>Nadere Reformatie</italic> in order to argue for the necessity of exploring Jan Bavinck’s description of the nature and application of godliness. After analysing some primary sources, I argue that Jan Bavinck’s theology of piety can be described as experiential and holistic. In this way, it may be considered, in general terms, as a bridge between the <italic>praxis pietatis</italic> of old Calvinism – characterised by Calvin and the <italic>Nadere Reformatie</italic> theologians – and neo-Calvinism, represented by Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) and Jan’s son Herman Bavinck.

Jan Bavinck’s (1826-1909) Reformed Piety: Experiential and Holistic

<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
In the theological retrieval of neo-Calvinism, Herman Bavinck (1854-1921) is the golden child, but does he ere? This article explores a misnomer in Bavinck’s theology, that of adoption within the <italic>ordo salutis</italic> (order of salvation). Bavinck’s doctrine of adoption seems to be misplaced because he writes of adoption as <italic>juridical</italic> (<italic>RD</italic> IV, 219, 226-227), a term that belongs properly to justification. Yet he draws upon adoption to illustrate sanctification. The two doctrines, justification and sanctification, are of course intimately linked in his system, but Bavinck either misdeploys or mis-categorizes adoption. In light of Bavinck, placing it in the <italic>juridical</italic> category, but drawing upon it to illustrate sanctification it remains unclear why it remains <italic>juridical</italic>. First, the article explores the main contours of Bavinck’s <italic>ordo salutis establishing</italic> the main categories and ordering, this will lay hold to the problematic placement of adoption. From there, a constructive alternative is set forth, that of the category of <italic>relational</italic>.

Is There Room in the Inn?: Visiting Adoption in Herman Bavinck’s <italic>Ordo Salutis</italic>

The syntax of 2 John 1: 5 is problematic. Six manuscripts, Ψ 5. 81. 642*. 1852 l, try to solve this difficulty by emending the participle ‘γράφων’ to the indicative verb ‘γράφω’. Culy and Leedy on Greek NT diagrams, on the other hand, understand the participle ‘γράφων’ to modify ‘ἐρωτάω’. In the latter approach, the participle ‘γράφων’ serves to modify ‘εἴχομεν’. This last approach, however, is divided into two possibilities: either it functions as a participle of condition or of attendant circumstance. Three English Bibles use a participle of condition (Holman Christian Standard Bible, NET Bible, and Christian Standard Bible). The other English translations, however, employ the function of attendant circumstance participle. Despite these syntactical discrepancies, this research offers a fresh reading of the puzzled syntax of 2 John 1: 5.

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>The study is a response to the call for papers on African issues and discusses the notion of leadership in the Zimbabwean context. Based on material drawn through an interdisciplinary research process, this article argues that the phenomenon of fear emanating from a Zimbabwean religio-culture cuts across the country’s socio-political structures and affects its different forms of leadership. Therefore, by drawing on primary and secondary as well as literary and non-literary, sources, the article examines how and why religio-culture and especially its elements, such as the phenomenon of fear, continue to influence the people’s understanding of leadership. The quest for a cross-cultural perspective leads to the consideration of both African and non-African scholarly views. In order to draw on concrete data, I focus on the perceptions and experiences of ordinary citizens whether professionals or non-professionals. Furthermore, the study considers arguments and propositions from disciplines such as history, political science, religious studies, anthropology, and African philosophy, among others.</abstract>

Religio-Culture, Fear, and Zimbabwe’s Leadership Perceptions

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>The beatific vision is widely perceived as a Roman Catholic doctrine. Many continue to view deification as a distinctively Eastern Orthodox doctrine incompatible with the Western theological tradition, especially its Protestant expressions. This essay will demonstrate that several Reformers of the first and second generation promoted a vision of redemption that culminates with deification and beatific vision. They affirmed these concepts without apology in confessional statements, dogmatic works, biblical commentaries, and polemical treatises. Attention will focus on figures in the Reformed tradition though one could produce similar surveys for the Lutheran and Anglican branches of the Reformation as well. John Calvin will receive extended treatment because some scholars dispute whether he affirmed deification. This essay presents important evidence thus far overlooked which should settle the question.</abstract>

Recovering the Reformation’s Ecumenical Vision of Redemption as Deification and Beatific Vision

<abstract xml:lang="en"><title style='display:none'>The Use and Abuse of John Calvin in Richard Hooker's Defence of the English Church</title>At times Richard Hooker (1554-1600), as an apologist for the Church of England,
has been treated as “on the Calvinist side”, at others as an “anti-Calvinist”. In fact, Hooker and
his Church were dependent on John Calvin in some ways and independent in others. Hooker
used recognized sources to paint a picture of Calvin and his reforms in Geneva that would
negatively characterize the proposals and behaviour of those he opposed in the Church of
England, and yet he adopted Calvinist positions on several topics. A judicious treatment of
Hooker’s attitude to John Calvin requires careful reading, and an understanding of the polemical
use of the portrait of Calvin. Calvin was indeed grave and learned, but he was human and,
as an authority, inferior to the Church Fathers, who were formally recognized as authorities in
the Church of England.</abstract>

The Use and Abuse of John Calvin in Richard Hooker's Defence of the English Church

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>This paper discusses the complex relationship of Reformed confessions and Reformed orthodox scholasticism. It is argued that Reformed confessions differ in genre and method from Reformed scholastic works, although such differences between confessional and scholastic language should not be mistaken for representing different doctrines that are no longer in harmony with each other. What is more, it is precisely the scholastic background and training of the authors of such confessions that enabled them to place their confessional writings in the broader catholic tradition of the Christian church and to include patristic and medieval theological insights. Thus proper attention to their scholastic background helps to see that at least in some confessions the doctrine of predestination, for instance, is not as ‘rigid’ as one might think at first sight. In order to demonstrate that the doctrine of the Reformed confessions was much in line with the scholastic theology of Reformed orthodoxy, this paper discusses, after having explained the terms ‘Reformed orthodoxy’ and ‘scholasticism’, the early Reformed scholastic theologians Beza, Zanchi, and Ursinus, who also have written confessional texts. The paper also includes a more detailed discussion of the <italic>Belgic Confession</italic> and the scholastic background of the Canons of Dordt and the <italic>Westminster Confession</italic>, thereby focusing on the doctrines of God, providence, and predestination.</abstract>
