Considering the increase of life expectancy the total number of HF patients is expected to grow in the future, which makes HF an important focus of research. New high-throughput techniques, such as the “omics” (genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics) have brought new insight into disease pathophysiology, facilitating the discovery of an impressive number of candidate biomarkers. In this review we consider different perspectives on the evaluation and clinical potential of biomarkers in heart failure as their usefulness in clinical settings is constantly being evaluated in order to bring them closer to the point-of-care.
