The doctrinal standards of the Methodist Church in Britain assert a vocation of holiness yet what is unclear is the strategy through which this vocation might be enabled. The author outlines research that describes diverse responses to holiness within one particular British Methodist church. Throughout the article, the author asserts the relational nature of holiness and therefore presents an authentic and effective way for enabling local Methodist churches to engage with their Methodist doctrine through local and rooted relationships joining together in spiritual exploration and sharing in God's ministry.

Living Theology: Methodists Respond to a Call to Holiness

The missionaries of the Primitive Methodist Mission pioneered into Igboland in 1910 and encountered opposition and difficulties. Efforts to become established were hindered by several factors. However, starting from 1914, a religious awakening led by Garrick Braide, an African convert of Niger Delta Pastorate Church (i.e. Anglican Church in the Niger Delta), spread throughout Igboland causing widespread religious revival. Using original source material, this article examines how the Primitive Methodist Mission benefitted greatly from this religious awakening, and subsequently witnessed phenomenal growth and consolidation in Igboland.

The Impact of Garrick Braide's Revival on the Growth of Methodism in Eastern Nigeria between 1910 and 1932

In 2016, South Africa saw student and staff protests calling for the decolonisation of the teaching curriculum in institutions of Higher Education. Although these protests were centred in public universities, the issue of decolonisation also affects private institutions such as seminaries that need to transform curricula from being permeated with Western idealism to being authentically African. This article explores this issue for Methodist theological education. It argues that decolonisation affects not only the content of the teaching curriculum but also matters such as staffing and curriculum development. Its focus is to develop ways of implementing an Afrocentric curriculum in African Methodist seminaries.

How can we live together in peace? This article reflects on the need to develop an ethic of social responsibility that values and enhances solidarity. It is a response to the proliferation of violence in many African communities and seeks to argue against egoism (individualism) which it considers the root cause of much political and socio-economic insecurity across the continent. It maintains that a way of addressing this situation is the development of an altruistic mindset. The article thus attempts to combine traditional African cultural and religious narratives with comparable principles within the Christian tradition in order to explore the importance of altruistic action in the contemporary African context.

Holiness

 Holiness is an international journal of Wesleyan theology, published by Wesley House, Cambridge. The journal is dedicated to resourcing and extending the learning of the global Wesleyan/Methodist family, with a particular emphasis on decolonising theological scholarship. Holiness is an open access theological publication, providing an online platform for established and emerging scholars and practitioners in the Wesleyan/Methodist tradition from around the world. The journal publishes peer-reviewed articles in the fields of practical, contextual, biblical, and systematic theology.   Holiness: An International Journal of Wesleyan Theology is an open access platform that aims to resource the global Wesleyan/Methodist family for the transformation of church and world.  Holiness seeks to be    deliberately conversant with the Wesleyan/Methodist theological tradition  globally competent and decolonising in ethos  critically reflective on contemporary contexts  appropriately attentive to the praxis of holiness  creatively expressive of the tradition, while developing it through original research   The journal is read by practitioners and scholars around the world, and assumes a master’s level interest in theology. Readers are likely to be Methodist or Wesleyan in sympathy, but, of course, may also include those critical of the Wesleyan tradition.  The journal is ‘decolonising’ in ethos, in recognition that no particular ecclesial, theological or academic context is the judge and arbiter of all experience. Contributions from the global South as well as the global North are brought together in each issue of Holiness as one aspect of the journal’s commitment to this decolonising task.  Rooted in the Wesleyan tradition, Holiness is especially interested in the lived experience of Christian faith in different contexts around the world, and seeks to contribute to the development of a variety of contextually appropriate, theologically informed practices of holiness.  Articles published by Holiness present original research or offer exemplary reflection on issues in biblical, contextual, pastoral, practical and systematic theology. Some articles provide surveys of academic or practical fields of theological research, while others explore, extend and apply the Wesleyan tradition in particular contexts. Some articles bring insights and methods from other disciplines into conversation with Wesleyan theology and the practice of ministry in the global Methodist family, while others offer devotional exploration of Wesleyan themes. All articles are peer-reviewed and the journal as a whole seeks to contribute to the ongoing scholarly life of the Wesleyan/Methodist family.
