<abstract xml:lang="en"><title style='display:none'>Abstracts</title> How close are the relationships between young adults and their parents today? Which factors account for closer or less close relationships between the generations? The theoretical model considers opportunity, need, family and cultural-contextual structures. The empirical analyses draw on the Swiss TREE survey (“Transitions from Education to Employment”). They reveal remarkably close ties between the generations. However, we also find a number of strains, such as the separation of parents and unemployment of adult children, that contribute to family relationships being less close. The findings provide insight into the reality of intergenerational relationships during a dynamic period of life.</abstract>

This article examines the spatial dynamics of artists as they face the challenges presented by peripheral territory in visual arts, putting their mobility and flexibility to the test. Whether staying anchored in a geographical area or moving abroad depends on the dominant scheme within the world of art. The globalization of contemporary art promotes the formation and recognition of “hypermobile” artists, but it can also lead to local strategies of withdrawal.</abstract>

From the Periphery to the International Scene. Artistic Trajectories in the Trial of Mobility

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>This article looks at interprofessional disagreements about how care should be provided in nursing homes for elderly people. The article shows that, while work is discussed by referring to four general principles, their prioritization remains a point of contention. This priority ranking is specific to the norms of each profession involved, which are not always compatible.</abstract>

Disagreements in Nursing Homes. Analysing the Competition between Occupations with Fuzzy Boundaries

<abstract xml:lang="en"><title style='display:none'>Abstracts</title> This article analyzes the gender wage gap in Switzerland, using data from the Swiss Household Panel. The results show that women in Switzerland earn still less than men with the same endowments. One of the main reasons for this gap is occupational segregation: women and men working in femaledominated occupations have lower wages than those in integrated and male-dominated occupations. In order to have equally distributed job categories, 40% of the male or female employees would need to change jobs. But the “preferences” for jobs between genders seem to have been frozen for decades. The gender wage gap is particularly large within part-time employees working below 50%. Younger cohorts, however, seem less exposed to gender wage differentials.</abstract>

Längsschnittanalysen mit Daten des Schweizer Haushalt-Panels zeigen, dass mit der Geburt des ersten Kindes die Wahrnehmung von Frauenbenachteiligungen und die Zustimmung zu Frauenfördermassnahmen steigen. Diese Erhöhung ist allerdings nur von vorübergehender Dauer. Kein klares Muster zeichnet sich bei den bildungsspezifischen Analysen ab.</abstract>

This article studies the rise of academic data science in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. By focusing on the boundary work that accompanies this development, we try to understand current transformations in knowledge production within digital academia and beyond. Drawing on qualitative interviews with data science scholars, we identify five lines of demarcation in claiming universal epistemic authority. This boundary work is characterized by multiple tensions and varies depending upon context and counterpart, making it inherently relational.

Building on scholarship on the mediatization of organizations, we propose a conception of the social media orientation of organizational leaders and apply it to higher education. Based on an online survey of 276 leaders of Swiss higher education institutions, we show that social media platforms have made their way into university management and communication but are still not as important as news media. The study discusses differences between university types and uses the literature on new public management to derive influencing factors.

The digitalization of research practices in the humanities has led to the emergence of the field of digital humanities (DH). Through a qualitative study of Swiss universities we explore how institutional structures and definitions of DH interact. We show that underdefinition enables flexibility in institutionalization, while the local contexts that lead to diverse institutional arrangements may necessitate the underdefinition of DH.

The qualitative analysis of political strategies and documents shows that actors in this policy field use open, ambiguous terms to characterise digitalisation. By building on this discursive strategy, the political actors aim not only to reduce uncertainty about the digital transformation as a complex phenomenon but also to build political consensus about the future development of this discursive field.

This article examines how digitalisation is used for organisational distinction in the field of Swiss universities for the period 2010–2020. It shows that digitalisation does not fundamentally challenge the order of the Swiss university field but triggers competitive dynamics that are accompanied by different forms of identity articulation. The article concludes that the interplay of competition and identity articulation of actors is complex and must be analyzed in the context of relative field positions.

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title> Am Übergang in nachobligatorische Ausbildungsgänge durchlaufen viele Jugendliche in der Schweiz eine sogenannte Übergangslösung oder ein Brückenangebot wie z. B. ein zehntes Schuljahr. Wir beleuchten in diesem Beitrag zum einen, wie schulische, individuelle, familiäre und systemische Kontextfaktoren den Übertritt in solche Brückenangebote beeinflussen. Zum anderen gehen wir der Frage nach, wie sich ein verzögerter Einstieg über ein Brückenangebot auf die Chance auswirkt, eine Ausbildung auf Sekundarstufe II zu beginnen bzw. abzuschliessen. Auf der Basis der TREE-Daten modellieren wir zunächst die interessierenden Übertrittsprozesse mittels einer multinomialen logistischen Regression, um dann mittels Propensity Score Matching deren Wirkung auf die nachobligatorischen Bildungschancen abzuschätzen.</abstract>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>This study estimates the prevalence of non-take-up of social assistance using administrative data from the Canton of Bern. Regional variation in non-take-up rates is then used to study the contextual effects of social norms with respect to welfare receipt legitimacy. Social norms are proxied with the degree of urbanity, language regions and communal voter shares of left- and right-wing parties. Multiple regression analysis, extended by several robustness checks, suggests that social norms do indeed have an impact on take-up behavior.</abstract>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>Factorial Survey Analysis (FSA) is an analytical tool that presents respondents with fictional situations (“vignettes”) to be rated or judged. In this paper we study the use of FSA in labour market sociology, with a particular focus on employer-based surveys, and what they can teach us about hiring preferences. FSA is useful in this context as it targets employers directly and comes close to a causal design. This review article seeks to pinpoint the contributions FSA has made to the field, identify its limits and propose topics in which it may be useful.</abstract>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>Population aging and international migration have propelled the aging of ethno-cultural minorities to the forefront of social scientific inquiries. Examining how scholarship on old age makes sense of ethnicity and race has become relevant. Based on a scoping review of peer-reviewed articles published between 1998 and 2017 (n = 336), the present article asks whether the notions of racialization and racism inform this scholarship and argues that a racism-sensitive research agenda is needed.</abstract>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>Flexibility in highly skilled jobs combines the characteristics of the secondary and the professional labor market, which oblige to revise the separation between salaried work and self-employment. Two cases are studied: the employment system of artists and technical workers in the performing arts and the work of independent contractors mediated by umbrella firms. An analysis of the French labor market shows how “flexicurity” may work, but also how its books may get unbalanced, as employers learn to make strategic use of unemployment insurance.</abstract>
