<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>For the study of the first year of life, Sander, Stern, and Gomez each chose the adult–infant relationship as the unit of analysis; they followed its development, respectively, in <italic>moments of meeting</italic>, in the <italic>proto-conversation</italic> and in the <italic>focus of attention</italic>. The authors explicitly refer to the Gestalt theory and support the need to interpret the behavior of the child as part of a wider context, as the experiences of <italic>a person in relation</italic> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="j_gth-2018-0015_ref_006_w2aab3b7b4b1b6b1ab1ab6Aa">Galli, 2010</xref>) since birth.</p></abstract>
