Interpretation of the concept of “discount” in Technical Works Tenders

Publicado en línea: 28 Mar 2019
Páginas: 16 - 23

Resumen

Abstract

The text deals with the concept of the discount submitted by a candidate contractor tendering for a public works project. In accordance with prevailing conceptions, the quantity of the discount is perceived as being the amount of monetary compensation the candidate building contractor is willing to forgo for the sake of emerging as the winner of the tender. The text argues on the contrary that the discount is an objectively measurable magnitude. Specifically it is equal to the algebraic difference of the absolute surplus value that could be appropriated by the public works contractor minus the quantity of relative surplus value by virtue of which he is able to recoup the amount of discount submitted in the tender.

No Guts, No Glory: Promoting Economic Independence of Brown Sugar Farmers Through Co-Operative

Publicado en línea: 28 Mar 2019
Páginas: 24 - 36

Resumen

Abstract

Banyumas regency is the largest producer of brown sugar in Indonesia. One location which produce brown sugar is in Ketanda Village. Unfortunately, most of brown sugar farmers have been trapped to bad middlemen for decades since they are lack of capital and market access. The farmers pay debt to middlemen with their sugar then the price is determined by the middleman. Moreover, middlemen buy brown sugar in much lower price than the market price. Both the buying price and the debt scheme determined by the middlemen are unfair to brown sugar farmers. This research used action research method. In the first step of action research, diagnosis, it was found that brown sugar farmers need an institution which can facilitate them to be free from middlemen, strengthen the farmers community, and also develop their business model. Therefore, the intervention made by gathering local actors and they committed to build a cooperative. There are two implications from this study. First, this study will enrich literature in cooperative as a social enterprise which has a main goal to manage social problem. Second, if successfully implemented, the cooperative model can be replicated in other regions to manage the same social problem, thus farmer’s economic independence will be achieved.

Evaluation of the Conceptual Theories, Elements, and Processes of Knowledge Management in Modern Day Organisations

Publicado en línea: 28 Mar 2019
Páginas: 37 - 54

Resumen

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the conceptual theories, elements, strategies along with the prospects and challenges of knowledge management (KM). The findings indicated that KM is a complex yet important process that requires organisations to create, process, disseminate and apply of knowledge. The findings also revealed knowledge is one of the most valuable resources of any organization. Therefore, effective KM is critical to the growth, performance, and survival of organisations. Furthermore, the many definitions of KM serve as a theoretical framework and empirical basis for multidisciplinary applications and prospects for organisations. Furthermore, the proper adoption and implementation of KM provides a systematic management approach for organisations to create, store, disseminate and apply knowledge critical to organizational performance and decision-making processes. Furthermore, KM can minimize the time, operational costs and material losses during product design, lifecycle, and quality assurance. Despite its merits, KM has numerous challenges. Most notable is the lack of an acceptable definition and understanding of KM concepts and practices. This can result in poor adoption and implementation thereby affecting sustainable organisational growth and development. Therefore, the paper concludes that KM adoption and implementation is critical to organisational goals, growth and performance.

The comparative method for policy studies: the thorny aspects

Publicado en línea: 28 Mar 2019
Páginas: 56 - 67

Resumen

Abstract

Over the past decades, the comparative method has attracted the attention of the theorists, and studies based on this approach have increased in applied policy research. In their daily and strategically policy decisions, the decision makers from local, regional and national levels use more and more the comparative research methods, especially due to interlinked relationship and the need for bench learning and benchmarking practices. The comparative method allows the actors to analyse other experiences, and thus to take decisions more efficient. This is a normal, an inevitable situation, when the unit of analysis is a country, a field of matters or a process where researchers compare cases from empirical or theoretical point of view. The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical view on the capacity of comparative method to foster knowledge in policy studies. The intention is to see and to explore the utility of comparative method for policy studies and policy analysis, since a new approach “evidence-based policymaking” arise, emphasising the importance of using evidence from other political and policy systems.

Publicado en línea: 28 Mar 2019
Páginas: 68 - 77

Resumen

Abstract

This study examines the effect of visualization level and level of assignment complexity on investment decision making as measured by level of accuracy, level of confidence and calibration level. This research uses experimental method. The experimental method in this research is 2x2 (mixed design) include: (1) Level of visualization (high and low) and (2) Complexity of task (high and low). The dependent variable in this research is the level of accuracy, level of confidence and calibration level. Data analysis technique used in this research is independent sample t-test. Participants in this study are students of Accounting Undergraduate Program in one Private University in East Java. The total participants in this study were 103 people, but only 77 participants who passed the check manipulation and can be analyzed further. The results of this study indicate that the visualization effect in decision-making has an effect only when decision makers receive assignment with low complexity of assignment. The results of this study indicate that the effect of the complexity of the assignment influences both decision-making as measured by the level of accuracy, level of confidence and calibration level.

On the relationship between intra group conflict and group performance: Evidence from Telecom Sector of Pakistan

Publicado en línea: 28 Mar 2019
Páginas: 78 - 87

Resumen

Abstract

The current study investigates the link between Intra Group Conflict (Task Conflict, Relationship Conflict) and Group Performance of the employees in the Telecom sector of Pakistan. Employees’ performances are improved by harmony, friendly environment and lack of conflict in an organization. To find out the practicality of these assertions, 200 questionnaires were distributed among employees of five main mobile telecom companies namely Telenor, Mobilink, Ufone, Zong and Warid at their head offices. 122 questionnaires were received back that resulted in 61% response rate. The paper addressed the extent of employees’ perception about Task Conflict and Relationship Conflict in their groups and also investigated that how these types of Intra-group conflict were linked to the overall performance of their groups. A theoretical model was developed to test these hypotheses. For the measurement of intra group conflict (Task conflict, relationship conflict) and group performance two valid and reliable instruments were used. Furthermore for analysis of these data Correlation and regression were used. The result of the study showed significant positive relationship between task conflict and group performance. However, negative association was found between relationship conflict and group performance. At the end, conclusion, limitations, and future research bearings are likewise highlighted.
