Aim

The present study was carried out to examine the impact of farm harvest prices on the income of the farmers from sugarcane crop in Haryana, India. It also addresses the critical issue of acreage response to prices in the agricultural sector.

Materials and Methods

It pertains to the whole of the state of Haryana, and the data for area, prices, yield, production, and income were collected, systematized and analyzed for the period 1982/83 to 2021/22 by dividing the whole study period into four periods. Farmers take decisions about crop and quantity based on the crop prices that affect the area allocation for different crops. To evaluate the acreage response concerning the price impact on relative profitability, the compiled data were analyzed by performing the Nerlovian distributed lag method.

Results

The findings emphasize that price remained the most instrumental factor in comparison to yield in increasing farm income from sugarcane crops. The examination of the relationship between the price of sugarcane and other selected variables highlights that income has a higher degree of correlation with the price of sugarcane.

Conclusions

In the majority of cases the relative crop of sugarcane, i.e., paddy was found more profitable.
