<abstract xml:lang="en" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>The present study describes synthesis of a series of 2-phenyl benzimidazole-1-acetamide derivatives and their evaluation for anthelmintic activity using Indian adult earthworms, <italic>Pheretima posthuma.</italic> The structure of the title compounds was elucidated by elemental analysis and spectral data. The compounds 4-({[2-(4-nitrophenyl)-1<italic>H</italic>-benzimidazol-1-yl]acetyl}amino) benzoic acid (<bold>3a</bold>), <italic>N</italic>-ethyl-2-[2-(4-nitrophenyl)-1<italic>H</italic>-benzimidazol-1-yl] acetamide (<bold>3c</bold>), <italic>N</italic>-benzyl-2-[2-(4-nitrophenyl)-1<italic>H</italic>-benzimidazol-1-yl] acetamide (<bold>3d</bold>), <italic>N</italic>-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-[2-(4-nitrophenyl)-1<italic>H</italic>-benzimidazol-1-yl] acetamide (<bold>3f</bold>), 2-[2-(4-nitrophenyl)-1<italic>H</italic>-benzimidazol-1-yl]-<italic>N</italic>-phenyl acetamide (<bold>3h</bold>), 2-[2-(4-chlorophenyl)-1<italic>H</italic>-benzimidazol-1-yl]-<italic>N'</italic>-phenylacetohydrazide (<bold>3k</bold>), 2-[2-(4-chlorophenyl)-1<italic>H</italic>-benzimidazol-1-yl]-<italic>N</italic>-(4-nitrophenyl) acetamide (<bold>3n</bold>) and 2-[2-(4-chlorophenyl)-1<italic>H</italic>-benzimidazol-1-yl]-<italic>N</italic>-phenyl acetamide (<bold>3q</bold>) were found better to paralyze worms whereas <italic>N</italic>-ethyl-2-[2-(4-nitrophenyl)-1<italic>H</italic>-benzimidazol-1-yl] acetamide (<bold>3c</bold>), N-(4-nitrophenyl)-2-[2-(4-nitrophenyl)-1<italic>H</italic>-benzimidazol-1-yl] acetamide (<bold>3e</bold>), 4-({[2-(4-chlorophenyl)-1<italic>H</italic>-benzimidazol-1-yl] acetyl}amino) benzoic acid (<bold>3j</bold>), 2-[2-(4-chlorophenyl)-1<italic>H</italic>-benzimidazol-1-yl]-<italic>N</italic>-ethyl acetamide (<bold>31</bold>) and 2-[2-(4-chlorophenyl)-1<italic>H</italic>-benzimidazol-1-yl]-<italic>N</italic>-phenyl acetamide (<bold>3q</bold>) were better to cause death of worms compared to the anthelmintic drug albendazole.</p></abstract>
