This article deals with the financing problems of statutory pension insurance in Germany, which are primarily the result of demographic changes in the population. It discusses the reform proposal of a price-indexed dynamisation of pensions and highlights the economic considerations and political ideas underlying the current linking of pensions to wage trends. The advantages and disadvantages of an alternative link to price trends are discussed. Furthermore, the reform proposal of a differentiated pension adjustment is critically examined. Differentiated adjustments are usually intended to protect only particularly vulnerable pensioners from high inflation.
