<italic>S. cerevisiae</italic> var. <italic>boulardii</italic> yeasts, historically recognized as a separate species, are now considered a subspecies of <italic>S. cerevisiae.</italic> Strains of <italic>S. cerevisiae</italic> var. <italic>boulardii</italic> are widely used for prevention and treatment of disorders of human digestive system. The use of preparations based on <italic>S. cerevisiae</italic> var. <italic>boulardii</italic> impacts the functioning of the intestinal barrier, which leads to a change in the composition of the digestive tract microbiota and alleviates intestinal epithelial defects. Despite the clinically confirmed probiotic properties of these unicellular microorganisms, the number of reports of infections in humans has been increasing. Population studies suggest that <italic>S. cerevisiae</italic> yeasts are responsible for 0.1–3.6% of all cases of mycoses in patients receiving therapy with probiotics containing <italic>S. cerevisiae</italic> var. <italic>boulardii</italic>. The presence of a central venous catheter, parenteral nutrition, immunosuppression and co-morbidities in patients are considered as factors predisposing for infection. This work summarizes the most important information on biology of <italic>S. cerevisiae</italic> var. <italic>boulardii</italic> and presents the latest epidemiological data on fungemia caused by these fungi.

Drożdże <italic>S. cerevisiae</italic> var. <italic>boulardii</italic>, historycznie stanowiące odrębny gatunek, uznawane są obecnie za podgatunek drożdży <italic>S. cerevisiae</italic>. Szczepy <italic>Saccharomyces cerevisiae</italic> var. <italic>boulardii</italic> są powszechnie wykorzystywane w profilaktyce i leczeniu zaburzeń układu pokarmowego. Stosowanie preparatów na bazie <italic>S. cerevisiae</italic> var. <italic>boulardii</italic> wpływa na funkcjonowanie bariery jelitowej, co prowadzi do zmiany składu mikrobioty przewodu pokarmowego i łagodzi nieprawidłowości warstwy nabłonkowej jelita. Mimo klinicznie potwierdzonych, probiotycznych właściwości tych jednokomórkowych drobnoustrojów, wzrasta liczba doniesień na temat wywoływanych przez nie zakażeń u ludzi. Badania populacyjne sugerują, że drożdże <italic>S. cerevisiae</italic> są odpowiedzialne za 0,1–3,6% wszystkich przypadków grzybic, stwierdzanych u pacjentów stosujących terapię środkami probiotycznymi zawierającymi <italic>S. cerevisiae</italic> var. <italic>boulardii</italic>. Za czynniki predysponujące do rozwoju zakażeń uznaje się obecność centralnego cewnika żylnego, żywienie pozajelitowe, immunosupresję oraz choroby współistniejące. W niniejszej pracy zebrano najważniejsze informacje dotyczące biologii <italic>S. cerevisiae</italic> var. <italic>boulardii</italic>, a także przedstawiono najnowsze dane epidemiologiczne dotyczące fungemii wywoływanych przez te grzyby.
