<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p><italic>Capsicum annuum</italic> L. CM334 is susceptible to <italic>Nacobbus aberrans</italic> but highly resistant to <italic>Phy-tophthora capsici.</italic> Resistance to <italic>P. capsici</italic> is associated with the over-expression of various defense genes such as those encoding pathogenesis-related proteins. The transcriptional alterations of defense-related genes were determined in galls induced by <italic>N. aberrans (Na)</italic> in CM334 chili roots. Transcripts accumulation of <italic>WRKY-a, WRKY1, POX</italic> (peroxidase), <italic>PR-1</italic> (pathogenesis-related protein 1), and <italic>EAS</italic> (5-epiaristolochene synthase) was estimated by qRT-PCR, and they were compared with those recorded in the incompatible CM334- <italic>P. capsici (Pc)</italic> interaction. The levels of all studied genes were significantly (P s 0.05) lower <italic>(WRKY1, POX</italic> and <italic>PR-1)</italic> or down-regulated <italic>(WRKY-a</italic> and EAS) in the presence of <italic>N. aberrans</italic>; in contrast, in the incompatible interaction, all genes were significantly up-regulated. The alterations induced by <italic>N. aberrans</italic> could be necessary to ensure the successful completion of its life cycle in CM334 chili roots.</p></abstract>
