The present study (April 2015 to March 2018) is carried out to document and enlist the indigenous utilization pattern of Palmyra palm (<italic>Borassus flabellifer</italic> L.) in coastal districts of Odisha, India. The purpose of the research is to explore multipurpose use of Palmyra palm with the aim to suggest for proper marketing of the products which provides livelihood support to the rural people of Odisha. Exploratory assessment is made through field survey, literature consultations and key informant interviews. Various plant parts such as root, stem, leaves, inflorescence, seed, and fruit are used for various purposes including food, beverage, fiber, medicinal, and timber. This plant has been instrumental for indigenous people in providing a substantial livelihood through their own indigenous wisdom from collection to the processing of products. Certain measures for its better utility are suggested.

Diet has a major influence on both, human health and their behavior. Raw veganism is a diet that brings together two concepts: the one of veganism and the one of raw foodism, a diet that excludes all ASF (Animal Source Foods), all food cooked at a temperature above 48 °C (118 °F), and any food that is changed from its ordinary condition, and/or processed. The aim of the study was to bring more information about raw vegan diet and the controversy raw vegan versus cooked food. Scientific data taken into account recommend the use of the raw vegan diet mostly for a short period.

Pros and Cons of Raw Vegan Diet

<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
Objective: To determine the symptoms, associated pathologies and features of Childhood Celiac Disease in the population of eastern Algeria.
Study: The retrospective study was conducted in Pediatric Specialized Hospital of Sidi Mabrouk - Constantine. This study was based on data of 100 patients.
Results: In this sample, we noted a diversity of signs and associated pathology, a variety of digestive symptoms represented mainly by abdominal pain (59%), chronic diarrhea (51%) and vomiting (48%). Extra-digestive symptoms represented mainly by palorous skin and mucosa, delayed status and weight and stagnation of the weight with the percentages: 69%, 53% and 51% respectively. In addition, we noted biological disorders and a series associated pathologies namely: anemia (29%) and mouth ulcers (6%).
Conclusion: Childhood Celiac Disease (CD) of eastern Algeria can be expressed by a variety of digestive symptoms and gastrointestinal disorders (GI) in addition to a series of associated conditions.

Characteristics of Celiac Disease in Childhood of Eastern Algeria

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title> The purpose of the present study was to analyse the changes in concentrations of total proteins, albumin, globulins and albumin/globulin ratio in dogs with experimentally induced acute inflammation. The study was performed on 9 mongrel dogs (experimental group) and 6 mongrel dogs (control group) at the age of 2 years and body weight 12-15 kg. The acute inflammation was reproduced by inoculation of 2 ml turpentine oil in the lumbar region subcutaneously and in same quantity saline in control dogs. Blood samples were collected into heparinized tubes before inoculation (hour 0) then at hours 6, 24, 48, 72 and on days 7, 14, 21. The statistical analysis of the data was performed using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The level of albumin statistically decreased in the experimental dogs from at 72nd h to day 14 while the concentration of globulins increased from the 72nd h to day 21. On days 7 and 14 the albumin/globulin ratio slightly decreased. During the whole post inoculation period the values of total protein have not changed. The dates of the present study confirm that albumin, albumin/globulin ratio and globulins are sensitive factors in inflammatory conditions in dogs.</abstract>

Changes in the Concentrations of Some Plasma Proteins During Acute Inflammation in Dogs

<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
The vegetation indices (VIs) derived from the hyperspectral reflectance of vegetation are presented in this study for monitoring live green vegetation in the northern ecosystems of Iceland, along the fjords of Eyjafjörđur and the Skagafjörđur. The comparative analysis of the following VIs was performed: the NDVI, RVI, NRVI, TVI, CTVI, TTVI and SAVI. The methodology is based on the raster calculator band in a QGIS. The dataset includes a Landsat TM scene of 2013, UTM Zone 53, WGS84 captured from the GloVis. The computed bands include the NIR and R spectral bands and their combinations according to the algorithms of each of the seven VIs. The hyperspectral reflectance and crop canopy computations were applied to generate various scales of VIs and demonstrated following data range: NDVI: -0.91 to 0.65, RVI: 0.22 to 19.65, NRVI: 0.63 to 0.90, TVI: 0 to 1.12, CTVI: -0.64 to 1.07, TTVI: 0.70 to 1.18 and SAVI: -1.36 to 0.99 (roughly to 1.00). Of these, the RVI, NRVI, TVI and TTVI are adjusted to the positive values while the NDVI, CTVI and SAVI do include the negative diapason in the dataset due to the computing algorithm. The algorithms of the seven VIs are described and visualized in form of maps based on the multispectral remote sensing Landsat TM imagery identifying vegetated areas, their health condition and distribution of green areas against the bare soils, rocks, ocean water, lakes and ice-covered glaciers. The paper contributes both to the technical presentation of the QGIS functionality for the Landsat TM data processing by a raster calculator, and to the regional geographic studies of Iceland and Arctic ecosystems.

Hyperspectral Vegetation Indices Calculated by Qgis Using Landsat Tm Image: a Case Study of Northern Iceland

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title> The aim of this study was to determine the levels of Ni, Co, Pb, Cd and Hg in the muscle, hepatopankreas, kidney and gonads of European chub (Squalius cephalus) from the middle course of the Nitra River, during spring and autumn seasons by AAS method. The concentrations of metals (mg.kg-1 wet weight) in the muscle ranged as follows: Ni 0.15-1.18, Co 0.09-0.58, Pb 0.39-1.66, Cd 0.04-0.29, Hg 0.85-2.71. Statistically significant differences among individual tissues, as well as between seasons have been recorded. Higher metals concentrations were detected in inner organs than in muscle. Permissible limits for safe consumption in the case of Pb, Cd and Hg have been exceeded in 100%, 95% and 100%, respectively. Currently, for the Co and Ni are not set any permissible limits.</abstract>

Distribution of Heavy Metals (Ni, Co, Pb, Cd, Hg) in Tissues of European Chub (Squalius cephalus L.) from the Middle Course of the Nitra River, Slovakia

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
This study delves into the comprehensive evaluation of phytochemicals extracted from Anvillea radiata, with a focus on their potential anti-inflammatory applications. High-performance liquid Chromatography analysis reveals the dominance of catechin in the aqueous extract, alongside other compounds such as syringic acid, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and vanillic acid, as well as quercetin-3-β-D-glucoside and rutin in smaller quantities. An in vitro anti-inflammatory assay demonstrates the superior effectiveness of <italic>A. radiata</italic> aqueous extract at lower concentrations compared to Aspirin, raising possibilities for reduced side effects and enhanced cost-effectiveness. Drug-likeness predictions emphasize the potential of catechin, syringic acid, and vanillic acid for drug development due to their molecular characteristics. Toxicity risk assessment indicates that catechin, quercetin-3-β-D-glucoside, and rutin exhibit low toxicity risks and favorable drug-likeness properties. Molecular docking analysis highlights promising interactions between the identified compounds and crucial anti-inflammatory (COX-2, MPO, IL1β, IL6, and TNFα.) target proteins. Notably, catechin demonstrates a strong binding affinity to these proteins. Molecular dynamics simulations further support catechin’s potential, revealing significant deformability in complexes with COX-2 and MPO, indicating high structural flexibility. The variance map shows higher cumulative variances and the elastic network map yields satisfactory outcomes, further reinforcing the potential of <italic>A. radiata</italic> aqueous extract compounds, with catechin as a standout candidate for anti-inflammatory drug development.

Exploring the Anti-Inflammatory Potential of Phytochemicals from <italic>Anvillea radiata</italic>: <italic>In Vitro</italic> Assay, Molecular Docking, and Molecular Dynamics Simulations

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
Rabbit feed in Algeria is still based exclusively on commercial pelleted diets, but the recent use of non-conventional ingredients in feed formulation is becoming more frequent, and several studies were carried out on the incorporation of local raw materials in rabbit feed worldwide. However, studies related to the incorporation of Jujube are nonexistent. In this context; this experimental trial assessed the impact of Jujube pulp on local populations’ rabbits’ hematological and biochemical parameters during three physiological stages: non-pregnancy, pregnancy, and lactation. 72 rabbits were divided into 18 groups of 04 rabbits each one, three groups of non-pregnant females fed 100 % commercial pelleted diet, three groups of non-pregnant females fed 50 % commercial pelleted diet with 50 % Jujube, three groups of pregnant females fed 100 % commercial pelleted diet, three groups of pregnant females fed 50 % commercial pelleted diet with 50 % Jujube, three groups of lactating females fed 100 % commercial pelleted diet, and three groups of lactating females fed 50 % commercial pelleted diet with 50 % Jujube. The levels of white blood cells (WBC), hemoglobin concentration (Hb), lymphocytes (L %), mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and Platelets (PLT) recorded in pregnant and lactating rabbits fed a diet incorporating Jujube were greater than those found in females fed 100 % commercial pelleted diet. The results revealed also that 79 % of the variations in ALP, 79 % in creatinine and 57 % in Tb expressed were related to variations in diet and physiological stage. The hematological and biochemical profile of the experimental animals indicated that Jujube is nutritionally appropriate without any deleterious effect on the female rabbits.

Hematological and Biochemical Indices of a Local Rabbit Does Population Fed Diet Incorporated with Jujube Pulp (<italic>Ziziphus lotus</italic>)

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
In the context of the restoration of the holm oak forest ecosystem, which has suffered damage from wildfires, and with the aim of reducing the wildfire risk, the primary threat to these natural habitats, this study seeks to establish a systematic approach to map areas at risk of forest fires. This approach relies on the use of remote sensing data, including Landsat 8 satellite images and digital elevation models using Geographic Information System (GIS). Factors influencing the ignition and spread of forest fires were assessed, including vegetation cover, topography, and human factors. A forest fire risk map has been created for the Holm oak forest in the Al Hassasna region (Saida province), enabling local authorities and forest managers to implement more effective fire prevention and management measures.

Fire Risk Mapping for Holm Oak Forests in El Hassasna Region as Part of the Ecosystem Restoration Programme

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
The first step of the proteomic study is the extraction and the success of this technique was based mainly on the choice of the best extraction. The purpose of this study was to determine the simplest and lowest-cost method of total protein extraction. Initially, various extraction methods were performed for protein extraction from roots of <italic>Astragalus armatus</italic> Willd. The methods employed were extraction by RIPA buffer, hypotonic buffer and distilled water. After determination of protein concentration by Bradford method and SDS PAGE electrophoretic analysis, the quantity and quality of extracted proteins using different protocols from <italic>A. armatus</italic> were determined and compared. The protein yield of RIPA buffer method was higher than the yields of hypotonic buffer method and distilled water method. The best protein patterns were produced by RIPA buffer method. The extract obtained by RIPA buffer was the optimal protocol for protein extraction.

An Efficient Protein Extraction Method from <italic>Astragalus armatus</italic> Willd. Roots for Proteomic Analysis

<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
<italic>Actinoalloteichus hoggarensis</italic> is a rare bacterial species that was isolated from the Algerian Saharan desert and is known for producing biologically active compounds. Despite its potential, little is understood about the enzymes it produces, including endoglucanases. These cellulase enzymes break down cellulose, the primary structural component of plant cell walls that provides strength and rigidity. The breakdown of cellulose by endoglucanases has numerous biotechnological applications, such as the production of biofuels, bioplastics, and paper. This study involves an <italic>in silico</italic> characterization of an endoglucanase from <italic>A. hoggarensis</italic> to gain insight into its structural and functional properties, with the goal of informing the development of novel biotechnological applications. Our study represents a major milestone in understanding the potential of this rare bacterial species and its enzymes, opening up exciting new avenues for further research and development.

<italic>In silico</italic> Structural and Functional Characterization of an Endoglucanase from <italic>Actinoalloteichus hoggarensis</italic>

<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
Self-medication is an increasing global public health issue that affects both low and middle-income countries and developed nations. The residents of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, face a serious malaria problem and have limited access to healthcare. Consequently, many of them resort to self-medication to treat the disease. The purpose of this study was to assess the level of awareness among Port Harcourt residents about the negative consequences of self-medication for malaria on their health. A descriptive survey method was employed to select 105 participants randomly from two local government districts in Port Harcourt. The collected data were analyzed using percentage-based descriptive statistics. The study found that the majority of the participants engaged in self-medication, but they were mostly uninformed about the adverse effects of self-medication for malaria on their health. The participants in the study believed that they could handle their malaria symptoms, likely due to prior experiences and a proper diagnostic laboratory test confirming their diagnosis. Low income and a lack of health insurance were identified as the main reasons for self-medication, while other factors included limited healthcare facilities, expensive drugs, the inability to afford medical expenses, proximity to hospitals, and negative perceptions of healthcare professionals. The study indicates that self-medication for malaria will persist as a problem in the research region unless measures are taken by authorities and the government to address the issue.

Exploring the Understanding of the Health Effects of Self-Medicating for Malaria Among Port Harcourt Residents

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title> The aim of the present study was to detect the antibacterial activity of medicinal plants against fish microflora. A total of 4 ethanolic extracts of 6 plant species were collected from local environments of Slovakia and screened for antibacterial activity against bacterial microflora. Extracts of Melissa officinalis L., Mentha piperita L., Origanum vulgare L. and Malva mauritiana were used. Bacterial strains were isolated from common bleak (Alburnus alburnus) and common rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) of Latvian origin. All bacterial strains were identified with the Matrix- Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Among fish microflora, Acinetobacter pittii, A. baumannii, Buttiauxella agrestis, Delftia acidovorans, Enterobacter cloacae, Serratia liquefaciens, Pseudomonas alcaligenes, Ps. oryzihabitans, Staphylococcus epidermidis, St. caprae, Pantoea agglomerans, Lelliottia amnigena, Providencia rettgeri, Escherichia coli and Rahnella aquatilis were identified. It has been shown that all plant extracts exhibit different degrees of antimicrobial activity against the tested bacteria. All bacterial strains in the present study were moderate sensitive to all extracts applied. The strongest antimicrobial effect of Malva mauritiana and Melissa officinalis L. against Pseudomonas oryzihabitans (6.67±1.53 resp. 9.67±0.58 mm) were found. The best antimicrobial activity of Mentha piperita L. was against Staphylococcus epidermis (7.33±0.58 mm) and strongest antimicrobial effect of Origanum vulgare L. was same against two bacterial strains Enterobacter cloacae and Serratia liquefaciens (9.67±0.58 mm).</abstract>

Antibacterial Activity of Melissa officinalis L., Mentha piperita L., Origanum vulgare L. and Malva mauritiana against Bacterial Microflora Isolated from Fish

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title> The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro cytotoxicity of different concentrations (500-7500 μg/mL) of gentamicin - GENT (aminoglycoside antibiotic) on the selected mammalian cell line (Vero - cell line from African green monkey kidney). Analysis of the cell morphological changes was microscopically evaluated (magnification × 400). Quantification of Ca, Mg and total proteins was performed using spectrophotometry on device Rx Monza (Randox). Quantification of Na, K and Cl was performed on the automatic analyzer EasyLyte. The cell viability was assessed using the metabolic mitochondrial MTT test. Vero cells were able to survive at concentrations of 500 (89.21 %), 1000 (79.54 %) and 2000 μg/mL (34.59 %). We observed statistically significant decrease of vital cell content at concentrations of 2000, 4500, 7500 μg/mL against control group. Vero cell line slightly reacted to the presence of GENT but total proteins and mineral parameters were not significantly affected. Vero cells were highly sensitive to GENT with a significant decrease of viability at concentrations of 2000 and 4500 μg/mL (P &lt; 0.001). Our data reveal that GENT has a significant cytotoxic and adverse effect on the cell viability.</abstract>

In Vitro Assessment of Gentamicin Cytotoxicity on the Selected Mammalian Cell Line (Vero cells)

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title> The aim of our study was to assess the impact of mulberry (Morus nigra L.) and sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) addition on improvement of antioxidant characteristics of dark chocolate. For evaluation of total polyphenolic content we used Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, for total content of flavonoids spectrophotometric assay based on a formation of coloured flavonoid-aluminium complex was used and for the content of total phenolic acids was used method using Arnow’s reagent. Three different methods were also used for measuring the antioxidant activity of samples: DPPH scavenging activity, reducing power method and phosphomolybdate method. Obtained results showed, that compared to plain dark chocolate used as control, chocolate enriched with mulberry exhibited higher polyphenolic content and antioxidant capacity. On the other hand, enrichment with sea buckthorn didn’t show such significant improvement in antioxidant characteristics, but increased the levels of bioactive compounds despite the lower content of cocoa solids.</abstract>

The Influence of Fortification of Dark Chocolate with Sea Buckthorn and Mulberry on the Content of Biologically Active Substances

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title> Quality of poultry products, especially eggs, is a very important issue for the consumers and for the processing industry. The aim of the present study was to examine the interaction between the storage time and age of laying hens and their effect on the quality of table eggs. Eggs from 34 and 59- wk-old Bovans Brown hens were sampled and stored in the refrigerator for 1, 2, and 3 weeks. Significant effect of hen age (P&lt;0.01) was found on egg weight, shell strength, albumen height and Haugh units (HU). Eggs from older hens had 2.58% higher mass compared to the eggs of young hens. Eggs from 59-weeks old hens had significantly lower shell strength (3.63 kg vs. 4.31 kg). Albumen height and HU were lower in eggs from the older hens compared to the young ones (5.7 mm vs. 7.11 mm for albumen height; 70.35 vs. 81.77 for HU). Significant negative effect of storage time was found on egg weight, albumen height, HU and yolk colour (P&lt;0.01). The results indicated that egg quality characteristics monitored in this study decrease by hen age and during storage. The interaction effects between storage time and age of hens were significant only for yolk colour (P&lt;0.05).</abstract>

The Effect of Storage and Age of Hens on the Quality of Table Eggs

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title> The aim of this study was to evaluate antimicrobial activity of bees gastrointestinal Lactobacillus spp. of against Paenibacillus larvae. Content of the intestinal tract was cultured for isolation of Lactobacillus spp. Gut homogenates were plated on de Man, Rogosa and Sharpe agar (MRS, Oxoid) plates and incubated for 48-72h at 30°C anaerobically. Then, the identification of isolates with MALDI-TOF MS Biotyper was done. The bacterial strains Lactobacillus gasseri, L. amylovorus, L. kunkeei, L. fructivorans, Paenibacillus larvae were isolated from gut content of bees. The disc diffusion method was used for the determination of antimicrobial activities of the Lactobacillus supernatant against two strains of Paenibacillus larvae. The best antimicrobial activity of Lactobacillus against Paenibacillus larvae from gut was found in L. gasseri supernatant. Lesser degree of antimicrobial activity against P. larvae was found in L. kunkeei supernatant. The strongest antibacterial activity against P. larvae CCM 4438 was found in L. gasseri and L. amylovorus and the least antibacterial activity was found in L. fructivorans.</abstract>
