Simulation based Performance Test of Incident Detection Algorithms Using Bluetooth Measurements

Abstract

This article analyzes the use of Bluetooth-based travel times, for Automatic Incident Detection (AID) purposes. Automatic incident messages were derived for simulated data through the use of an AID algorithm, which was developed by Technical University of Munich (TUM). A Vissim model of a 15 kilometre section of A9 motorway in Germany was set up, where different scenarios of traffic situation, incidents and detector layout were introduced and travel times were generated, processed and then run through the TUM algorithm. The performance measures Detection Rate (DR), False Alarm Rate (FAR) and Mean Time To Detect (MTTD) were used for the analysis of the incident messages' quality of the simulated data and compared for every incident scenario. Local data were also generated in the Vissim model and used by VKDiff algorithm for incident detection. A comparison of the quality of the incident messages of both TUM and VKDiff algorithm was conducted.

Wireless Magnetic Sensor Network for Road Traffic Monitoring and Vehicle Classification

Abstract

Efficiency of transportation of people and goods is playing a vital role in economic growth. A key component for enabling effective planning of transportation networks is the deployment and operation of autonomous monitoring and traffic analysis tools. For that reason, such systems have been developed to register and classify road traffic usage. In this paper, we propose a novel system for road traffic monitoring and classification based on highly energy efficient wireless magnetic sensor networks. We develop novel algorithms for vehicle speed and length estimation and vehicle classification that use multiple magnetic sensors. We also demonstrate that, using such a low-cost system with simplified installation and maintenance compared to current solutions, it is possible to achieve highly accurate estimation and a high rate of positive vehicle classification.

“Mass Centre” Vectorization Algorithm for Vehicle’s Counting Portable Video System

Abstract

Vehicle counting is one of the most basic challenges during the development and establishment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The main reason for vehicle counting is the necessity of monitoring and maintaining the transport infrastructure, preventing different kind of faults such as traffic jams. The main applied solution to this problem is video surveillance, which is presented by different kind of systems. Some of these systems use a network of static traffic cameras, expensive for establish and maintain, or mobile units, fast for redeployment, but fewer in diversity.

In this paper, one particular concept of a low-cost mobile vehicle counting system is investigated, which uses an object detection method based on calculating “mass centre” of detected features of possible object. A hypothesis of improvement of the basic algorithm was formulated and a modification was proposed. In order to prove the hypothesis, both basic and modified algorithms were tested and evaluated.

Reconfigurable SRTM System for Road Traffic in Kingdom of Bahrain

Abstract

This paper presents reconfigurable hardware architecture for smart road traffic system based on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The design can be reconfigured for different timing of the traffic signals according to the received and collected data read by the different sensors on the road; the design has been described using VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language). The SRTM (Smart Road Traffic Management) System has some more features that help passenger to avoid traffic jamming by sending the collected information through web/mobile applications to find the best road between the start and destination points, which will be displayed on Google maps, at the same time it will also shows the points of traffic jamming on Google maps. SRTM system can also manage emergency vehicles such as ambulance and fire fighter and also can send snapshots and video streaming for different roads and junctions to show the points of traffic jamming. The design has been simulated and tested using ModelSim PE student edition 10.4. Spartan 3 FPGA starter kit from Xilinx has been used for implementing and testing the design in a hardware level.

Abstract

Nowadays in logistics integral processes between the material and related flows in supply chains are getting developed more and more. However, in spite of increasing volume of statistical data which reflect the integral processes, the influence evaluation issues of the logistic operations reliability indexes on the total logistics costs remain open and require the corresponding researches implementation.

In this article we offer the methodological approach based on the existing approaches analysis. This approach allows to evaluate the influence of the logistic operations implementation reliability on the total logistic costs constituents. At the same time, the supply chains are regarded as recoverable (reserved) systems. In the article you can see calculations examples for the supply chains with the set level of reliable work probability.

Abstract

This article is devoted to feeder containership traffic optimization on the trunk and feeder shipping lines. The optimization is fulfilled in case of the necessity of laden containers delivery between fixed pairs of ports as well as in case of the requirement not to exceed the vessel's capacity, taking into account her residual value during transition between feeder port lines. The paper takes into account uneven distribution of empty container equipment in ports of line and the solution is suggested considering the estimation of the empty TEU’s number which is subject to reposition.

Transportation of Dangerous Goods in Green Transport Corridors - Conclusions from Baltic Sea Region

Abstract

The Green Corridor concept represents a cornerstone in the development and implementation of integrated and sustainable transport solutions based on trans-nationality, multi-modality and a high involvement of public and private stakeholders, including the political level. Despite the fact that the Green Transport Corridor (GTC) concept is founded on the three dimensions of sustainability with a strong emphasis on environmental aspects, the corridor hubs as well as the whole transport corridors have to find ways to handle and transport dangerous goods by keeping the high sustainability standards.

The paper addresses the research questions what kind of economical, ecological and social risks might occur in the context of handling and transportation of dangerous goods in a Green Transport Corridor in the Baltic Sea Region, what consequences they might have on the GTC design and how and with which measures they can be managed. Based on this analysis the development of a comprehensive risk management concept for the handling and transportation of dangerous goods in Green Transport Corridors in the Baltic Sea Region based on Schröder and Prause (2015) will be started. The concept will include practical implications and best practices.

The Model to Assess the Implementation of Technical Conditions Defined in Annex IV of Marpol Convention 73/78: The Case of the Baltic Sea Port of Klaipeda

Abstract

Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission members seeking to implement MARPOL 73/78 Annex IV amendments which recognize the Baltic Sea as special are, in which discharge of uncommitted sewage from passenger ships is forbidden, must ensure that ports are equipped with adequate reception facilities. To ensure implementation of amendments of Annex IV in port of Klaipeda, the analysis framework model was defined by authors. The model evaluates the readiness of the port to changes brought by the amendments of MARPOL Annex IV. The scientific problem comes with perception of adequacy. Resolution MEPC.200(62) amending MARPOL 73/78 Annex IV states, that port reception facilities must be adequate to the needs of passenger ships using them without causing undue delay. Concept of adequacy is not defined, therefore other guidelines explaining adequacy were used: EU directive 2000/59/EC and IMO resolution MEPC.83(44) Guidelines for ensuring adequacy of port reception facilities. Based on these sources, criteria that must be met to ensure adequacy were identified and tested in article: 1) reception facilities meet needs of ships normally using them; 2) discharge of sewage does to cause undue delay; 3) reception facilities does not provide disincentive to use them; 4) facilities are accessible; 5) facilities contribute to the improvement of the marine environment.

Application of Fuzzy Sets for the Improvement of Routing Optimization Heuristic Algorithms

Abstract

The determination of the optimal circular path has become widely known for its difficulty in producing a solution and for the numerous applications in the scope of organization and management of passenger and freight transport. It is a mathematical combinatorial optimization problem for which several deterministic and heuristic models have been developed in recent years, applicable to route organization issues, passenger and freight transport, storage and distribution of goods, waste collection, supply and control of terminals, as well as human resource management. Scope of the present paper is the development, with the use of fuzzy sets, of a practical, comprehensible and speedy heuristic algorithm for the improvement of the ability of the classical deterministic algorithms to identify optimum, symmetrical or non-symmetrical, circular route. The proposed fuzzy heuristic algorithm is compared to the corresponding deterministic ones, with regard to the deviation of the proposed solution from the best known solution and the complexity of the calculations needed to obtain this solution. It is shown that the use of fuzzy sets reduced up to 35% the deviation of the solution identified by the classical deterministic algorithms from the best known solution.

Detection of Tree Roots in an Urban Area with the Use of Ground Penetrating Radar

Abstract

The paper is devoted to using ground penetrating radar (GPR) for the detection of tree roots in an urban area, since GPR allow detect the hidden objects in non invasive way. It is necessary exactly to know the growth direction, thickness and depth of the roots of the tree to confidently assert about the tree root influence on the technical condition of engineering objects and structures: of the buildings, of pavements, of roadway, of engineering communications and etc. The aim of the given research was experimentally to evaluation the possibilities of detection of tree roots in an urban area with the use of GPR on frequency 400 MHz and of algorithms of secondary processing of GPR signals. Results of interpretation of radar profile and evacuation of soil around tree show the possibility of detection of the tree roots and the determination of their parameters using one or two radar concentric profiles.

Storage Management of Hazardous Containers Using the Genetic Algorithm

Abstract

This work discusses the problem of dangerous containers storage in a container terminal. Container terminal represents an essential intermodal interfaces for global transportation network. Several materials handling possible to move containers at the port to better meet the needs of ships awaiting loading or unloading. Have a good organization of the terminal's container storage area requires a special effort. Containers search times can be considerable and lead to delays causing financial penalties for terminal management operators. An optimal location for a container in a terminal is very important for companies because this operation reduces transportation costs. In this article, we propose an approach for the placement problem of hazardous containers through the description of an optimization model to solve and optimize available storage space. The interest of this work is to develop a computer tool to enable the identification of the best location of a hazardous container using the Genetic Algorithm.

It is necessary exactly to know the growth direction, thickness and depth of the roots of the tree to confidently assert about the tree root influence on the technical condition of engineering objects and structures: of the buildings, of pavements, of roadway, of engineering communications and etc. The aim of the given research was experimentally to evaluation the possibilities of detection of tree roots in an urban area with the use of GPR on frequency 400 MHz and of algorithms of secondary processing of GPR signals. Results of interpretation of radar profile and evacuation of soil around tree show the possibility of detection of the tree roots and the determination of their parameters using one or two radar concentric profiles.

Abstract

This work discusses the problem of dangerous containers storage in a container terminal. Container terminal represents an essential intermodal interfaces for global transportation network. Several materials handling possible to move containers at the port to better meet the needs of ships awaiting loading or unloading. Have a good organization of the terminal's container storage area requires a special effort. Containers search times can be considerable and lead to delays causing financial penalties for terminal management operators. An optimal location for a container in a terminal is very important for companies because this operation reduces transportation costs. In this article, we propose an approach for the placement problem of hazardous containers through the description of an optimization model to solve and optimize available storage space. The interest of this work is to develop a computer tool to enable the identification of the best location of a hazardous container using the Genetic Algorithm.
