International tourism plays an essential role in the global economy, contributing significantly to economic growth, developing local communities and stimulating infrastructure investment. In this context, the competitiveness of a destination becomes a determining factor in attracting international tourist flows, influenced by the quality of services, accessibility and marketing strategies. The paper examines the evolution of international tourism, focusing on Romania’s position and competitiveness in this sector. The analysis includes statistics on tourist accommodation, arrivals and overnight stays, providing a detailed picture of global trends and how they have influenced tourism in Romania. Tourist expenditure and external factors that affected tourism such as threats and opportunities during the period are also presented. The paper evaluates the tourist offer and the activity in the tourism sector, comparing them with other international destinations. Through this analysis, both the strengths and the challenges facing Romania are highlighted, highlighting its growth potential and the strategic directions needed to improve its competitiveness on the international tourism market.
