<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p><xref ref-type="bibr" rid="j_subbs-2018-0003_ref_015_w2aab3b7b3b1b6b1ab1ac15Aa">Lefebvre’s 1970</xref> prophecy of the total urbanisation of society has come true with the expansion of the urban into natural and rural territories. For Lefebvre, the question of nature is closed by its ‘steady, violent death’ (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="j_subbs-2018-0003_ref_015_w2aab3b7b3b1b6b1ab1ac15Aa">Lefebvre, 2003</xref>) and its replacement by a ‘second nature’ (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="j_subbs-2018-0003_ref_024_w2aab3b7b3b1b6b1ab1ac24Aa">Schmid, 2014</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="j_subbs-2018-0003_ref_026_w2aab3b7b3b1b6b1ab1ac26Aa">Smith, 2008</xref>). This closure accounts at an epistemic level, for the dominance of the urban (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="j_subbs-2018-0003_ref_014_w2aab3b7b3b1b6b1ab1ac14Aa">Krause, 2013</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="j_subbs-2018-0003_ref_006_w2aab3b7b3b1b6b1ab1ab6Aa">Brenner and Schmid, 2014</xref>). Far from being closed, <italic>the question of nature</italic> is renewed within the present conditions of planetary urbanisation, as the interiorised non-urban is <italic>‘operationalised’</italic> to sustain urban growth, thus making the non-city ‘an essential terrain of capitalist urbanisation’ (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="j_subbs-2018-0003_ref_008_w2aab3b7b3b1b6b1ab1ab8Aa">Brenner, 2016</xref>). In what follows, I present how the Romanian forest is operationalised as a territory of planetary urbanisation through forest management practices. Looking into the negotiations and manipulations on the ground provides a way to ‘pay attention’ (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="j_subbs-2018-0003_ref_029_w2aab3b7b3b1b6b1ab1ac29Aa">Stengers, 2010</xref>) to those practices that sort and select natural areas. In the face of the recorded disappearance of the forest, the effort of making visible the rationality of planning, and the challenges that are posed upon it inscribes itself within an ‘ethics of visibility’ (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="j_subbs-2018-0003_ref_021_w2aab3b7b3b1b6b1ab1ac21Aa">Roberts, 2012</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="j_subbs-2018-0003_ref_032_w2aab3b7b3b1b6b1ab1ac32Aa">Topalovic, 2016</xref>).</p></abstract>
