In 2004, the extent of territorial water was widened from 4 to 12 nautical miles, enlarging the protected areas.Elaborated on the basis of: Ministry of Environment 1984, Protected areas in Svalbard 2010.National parks established in 1973: 1 – Nordvest-Spitsbergen, 2 – Forlandet, 3 – Sør-Spitsbergen. Nature reserves established in 1973: 4 – Nordaust-Svalbard, 5 – Søraust-Svalbard. National parks established in 2003–2005: 6 – Nordenskiöld Land, 7 – Sassen-Bünsow, 8 – Nordre Isfjorden, 9 – Indre Wijdefjorden.
