High lignin content of tobacco stem has been addressed as a drawback for its utilization on manufacture of reconstituted tobacco sheet. Therefore, the solvothermal method using ethylene glycol was investigated for the removal of lignin from tobacco stem. It was found that the removal efficiency of ethylene glycol on tobacco stem is much lower than that achieved on wheat straw and corncob, i.e., 13.9% <italic>vs</italic>. 39.3% and 44.1%, respectively. This can be rationalized in terms of the presence of solanesol in tobacco stem, which retards the strong hydrogen bond interaction between ethylene glycol and the free hydroxyl groups present in lignin. When solanesol was eliminated by applying an <italic>n</italic>-hexane extraction procedure, 40.5% of lignin was successfully dissolved from tobacco stem. The successful removal of lignin was further confirmed by the characterizing results of SEM, FT-IR and N2-sorption. The developed method provides a promising way to attenuate the negative effects of lignin on utilization of the otherwise wasted tobacco stem for production of reconstituted tobacco sheet.

Als Hindernis für ihren Einsatz bei der Herstellung von rekonstituierter Tabakfolie wird der hohe Ligningehalt von Tabakrippen angeführt. Es wurde daher die Solvothermalsyn-these unter Verwendung von Ethylenglykol als Methode zur Entfernung von Lignin aus den Tabakrippen untersucht. Die Untersuchung ergab, dass der mit Ethylenglykol erzielte Wirkungsgrad bei Tabakrippen mit 13,9% viel geringer war als bei Weizenstroh und Maiskolben mit jeweils 39,3% und 44,1%. Der geringere Wirkungsgrad kann mit dem Vorkommen von Solanesol in Tabakrippen erklärt werden, welches die starke Wasserstoffbrücken-Wechselwirkung zwischen dem Ethylenglykol und den freien Hydroxylgruppen im Lignin hemmt. Nach Anwendung eines Extraktionsverfahrens mit <italic>n</italic>-Hexan zur Elimination von Solanesol, konnten 40,5% Lignin erfolgreich aus den Tabakrippen gelöst werden. Die erfolgreiche Entfernung von Lignin wurde zudem durch die Ergebnisse der Charakterisierung mittels SEM, FT-IR und N2-Adsorption bestätigt. Die entwickelte Methode ist eine vielversprechende Möglichkeit, um den limitierenden Effekt von Lignin auf den Einsatz von Rippenabfällen bei der Herstellung von rekonstituierter Tabakfolie aufzuheben.

Il s’avéra que l’extraction à l’éthylèneglycol était moins efficace sur les côtes de tabac que sur la paille de blé et les rafles de maïs, avec des degrés d’efficacité respectifs de 13,9% contre 39,3% et 44,1%. Cette efficacité réduite peut s’expliquer par la présence, dans les côtes de tabac, de solanesol qui retarde la forte interaction de liaison des atomes d’hydrogène entre l’éthylène-glycol et les groupes hydroxyles libres présents dans la lignine. Une fois le solanesol éliminé grâce à une procédure d’extraction au <italic>n</italic>-hexane, 40,5% de la lignine des côtes de tabac fut dissoute avec succès. L’extraction réussie de la lignine fut, à nouveau, confirmée par les résultats de caractérisation par MEB, spectroscopie IRTF et sorption du N2. La méthode mise au point ouvre des perspectives prometteuses pour neutraliser l’effet contraignant de la lignine lors de la valorisation de déchets de côtes de tabac pour la production de feuilles de tabac reconstituées.
