<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

<p>Yellow (<italic>Cyperus esculentus</italic>) and purple (<italic>C. rotundus</italic>) nutsedges, and coffee senna (<italic>Senna occidentalis</italic>) are common weeds in the southern USA and each have been reported as alternative hosts for plant-parasitic nematodes. Our objective was to determine the host suitability of these weeds to plant-parasitic nematodes common in Florida agriculture and turfgrass systems. The root-knot nematode (RKN) species tested included <italic>Meloidogyne arenaria</italic>, <italic>M. enterolobii</italic>, <italic>M. floridensis</italic>, <italic>M. graminis</italic>, <italic>M. hapla</italic>, <italic>M. incognita</italic>, and <italic>M. javanica</italic>. The host status of sting nematode, <italic>Belonolaimus longicaudatus</italic>, was also evaluated, but only on the nutsedge species. All RKN species evaluated reproduced on both nutsedge species and had a reproductive factor greater than one, except for <italic>M. graminis</italic> on yellow nutsedge. However, only <italic>M. hapla</italic>, <italic>M. javanica</italic>, and <italic>M. graminis</italic> induced visual galls on yellow nutsedge and only <italic>M. graminis</italic> caused galling on purple nutsedge. <italic>Meloidogyne arenaria</italic> and <italic>M. graminis</italic> reproduced at a greater rate on purple nutsedge than on yellow nutsedge. Both nutsedge species were good hosts to <italic>B. longicaudatus</italic>. Coffee senna was a host to <italic>M. enterolobii</italic>, a poor host to <italic>M. incognita</italic>, and nonhost to the other RKN species evaluated.</p>
