The essay analyses the concept of the past in Graham Swift’s “Out of this World”, a novel organized like a collection of revisited mental photographs. It associates the characters’ piecemeal accounts with their mental photographs of the past, evincing their vision upon their remembered past experiences and upon their perceived reality. The past is presented as mental photographs which turn into fragmented stories.
