This paper presents a methodology for the identification of key dynamic parameters of a synchronous generator and excitation system based on measured transient and frequency responses. Identification is formulated as an optimization problem, where the objective function is constructed as a weighted sum of normalized root mean squared errors between the simulation model output and the measured data. The linearized model of the hydrogenerator and hydro turbine, derived from a nonlinear fifth-order model of generator, hydraulic turbine, and PI governor, is obtained for identification purposes. This identification approach is based on optimization and can be used in practice where typical identification methods are not feasible. Real test data from a voltage regulation experiment in a hydroelectric power plant were used to identify five selected parameters: transient reactances, d-axis open circuit time constant, exciter gain, and generator inertia.
