<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><sec id="j_jdis-2018-0011_s_007_w2aab3b8c33b1b7b1aab1c16b1Aa"><h3>Purpose</h3><p>New developments in the study of delayed recognition are discussed.</p></sec><sec id="j_jdis-2018-0011_s_008_w2aab3b8c33b1b7b1aab1c16b2Aa"><h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3><p>Based on these new developments a method is proposed to characterize delayed recognition as a fuzzy concept.</p></sec><sec id="j_jdis-2018-0011_s_009_w2aab3b8c33b1b7b1aab1c16b3Aa"><h3>Findings</h3><p>A benchmark value of 0.333 corresponding with linear growth is obtained. Moreover, a case is discovered in which an expert found delayed recognition several years before citation analysis could discover this phenomenon.</p></sec><sec id="j_jdis-2018-0011_s_010_w2aab3b8c33b1b7b1aab1c16b4Aa"><h3>Research limitations</h3><p>As all citation studies also this one is database dependent.</p></sec><sec id="j_jdis-2018-0011_s_011_w2aab3b8c33b1b7b1aab1c16b5Aa"><h3>Practical implications</h3><p>Delayed recognition is turned into a fuzzy concept.</p></sec><sec id="j_jdis-2018-0011_s_012_w2aab3b8c33b1b7b1aab1c16b6Aa"><h3>Originality/value</h3><p>The article presents a new way of studying delayed recognition.</p></sec></abstract>
