<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>We determined the abundance, species composition, sex ratio and seasonal dynamics of thrips on one cultivar of Welsh onion (<italic>Allium fistulosum</italic>) and eight cultivars of onion (<italic>Allium cepa</italic>) in South Poland within three vegetation seasons (2014–2016). Nine species of Thysanoptera were identified on <italic>A. cepa</italic> and <italic>A. fistulosum</italic>. Irrespective of the onion cultivar, <italic>Thrips tabaci</italic> was the dominant species (64.4% of all collected thrips specimens), while <italic>Frankliniella intonsa</italic> also occurred in high numbers (28.3%). Conversely, Welsh onion was most often inhabited by <italic>F. intonsa</italic> (62.7%), although <italic>T. tabaci</italic> was also numerous (28.3%). The predatory <italic>Aeolothrips intermedius</italic> accounted for 4.5% on <italic>A. cepa</italic> and 2.9% on <italic>A. fistulosum</italic>. In the most numerous species, <italic>T. tabaci, F. intonsa</italic> and <italic>A. intermedius</italic> populations were formed mainly by females. The cultivar most colonised by thrips was Kroll of <italic>A. fistulosum.</italic> The tested cultivars of <italic>A. cepa</italic> demonstrated varying degrees of attractiveness to thrips in the subsequent years. The relationship between populations of <italic>T. tabaci</italic>, <italic>F. intonsa</italic> and <italic>A. intermedius</italic> changed in the subsequent months of the growing season. In June, mainly <italic>T. tabaci</italic> and <italic>F</italic>. <italic>intonsa</italic> occurred on onion plants, while from July, the percentage shares of <italic>F. intonsa</italic> and the predatory <italic>A. intermedius</italic> in the thrips population on many onion cultivars increased. The level of attractiveness of <italic>A. cepa</italic> related to onion thrips, which is reported as a main pest of onion, varies depending on the year and cultivar.</p></abstract>
