Dear readers of „Beiträge“,

We would like to start the publication year 2021 and thus our Volume 30 with an editorial outlining a number of developments that we have already initiated or which are about to be implemented in future Volumes/Issues of the Journal.

The most obvious change: There is a new title of our Journal. In the last 10 to 15 years, a number of so called ‘new generation’ tobacco and nicotine products have been introduced, including heat-not-burn tobacco products, electronic cigarettes, oral tobacco products and oral nicotine delivery (OND) products. All these products aim to significantly reduce the number of toxicants the consumer is exposed to, while maintaining the desired properties and effects of flavor and nicotine. In order to appropriately reflect this development also in our Journal we have included “nicotine” and amended the title to:

“Contributions to Tobacco and Nicotine Research”

The old title will be kept as a subtitle “formerly: Beiträge zur Tabakforschung International”.

We have deliberately retained “Contributions” as in our opinion this is a distinctive mark – also in the German translation – and well known internationally. The modified scope of our Journal now explicitly designates the new tobacco and nicotine products:

Scope

Contributions to Tobacco and Nicotine Research (formerly: Beiträge zur Tabakforschung International / Contribution to Tobacco Research International) publishes articles with a focus on tobacco, nicotine and related consumer products. In addition, all aspects of research on the tobacco plant as well as on product technology and manufacturing are relevant for the Journal. Products of interest comprise (i) combustible tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, pipes, etc.), (ii) smokeless tobacco (SLT) products (snuff, snus, chewing tobacco, etc.), (iii) tobacco heating products (THP), (iv) electronic cigarettes (e-cigs, w/o nicotine), (v) oral nicotine delivery (OND) products. All scientific investigations on product-related properties (including physical, chemical, biological and toxicological properties) as well as on the influence on consumers’ behavior and response (including acute and long-term product use patterns and biomarker profiles) are considered for publication. Submissions can be of the following types: original investigations, reviews, short reports commentaries, letters to the editor.

A more formal change will be the transition of the time span for a volume: from 2 years to 1 year, starting with volume 30 (2021). Since 2020 we no longer print the articles per issue, but only publish them online.

Furthermore we will upload the published articles to the Journal′s website immediately after completion of proof production, which will significantly reduce publication time.

Our readers will be informed by e-mail about a new issue, including the abstracts of the articles as well as direct access to the full text. As a further service for our readers, we offer to send you a printed annual edition, if requested.

We are working closely with our Advisory Board in order to adjust and possibly enlarge this panel of peers. Here, it will be particularly important to represent the extended spectrum of our scope also in the composite of the Advisory Board. It is thus with great pleasure that we welcome Dr. Ernest Groman as a new member of the Advisory Board. Dr. Groman is a physician with a doctorate in Public Health. He is an Associate Professor for Public Health at the University of Vienna and the Scientific Director of the Nicotine Institute in Vienna.

The entire editorial team would be very pleased if our readers would let us have their opinion on these developments, please feel free to contact us by e-mail. Perhaps this will lead to further ideas for the future!
