<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>The application of DNA-based methods enables to identify <italic>Yersinia enterocolitica</italic> carrying the <italic>ail</italic>-gene with a greater sensitivity compared to culture methods and biochemical tests used for detection of pathogenic <italic>Y. enterocolitica</italic> in animal and food samples. In this study, 100 samples of pig tonsils were examined, among which 17 were positive for the <italic>ail</italic> gene. Additionally, biochemical tests and RT-PCR showed that nine <italic>Y. enterocolitica</italic> isolates carried the <italic>ail</italic>-gene. Two <italic>Y. enterocolitica</italic> isolates of 1A biotype had the <italic>ail</italic> gene. The results demonstrated the usefulness of RT-PCR method applied for detection of potentially pathogenic, possessing the <italic>ail</italic> gene <italic>Y. enterocolitica</italic> in the material examined.</p></abstract>
