<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>Endophytic fungi viz., <italic>Nigrospora sphaerica</italic> (E1 and E6)<italic>, Subramaniula cristata</italic> (E7), and <italic>Polycephalomyces sinensis</italic> (E8 and E10) were isolated from the medicinal plant, Shirazi thyme (<italic>Zataria multiflora</italic>). In <italic>in vitro</italic> tests, these endophytes inhibited the mycelial growth of <italic>Monosporascus cannonballus</italic>, a plant pathogenic fungus. Morphological abnormalities in the hyphae of <italic>M. cannonballus</italic> at the edge of the inhibition zone in dual cultures with <italic>N. sphaerica</italic> were observed. The culture filtrates of these endophytes caused leakage of electrolytes from the mycelium of <italic>M. cannonballus</italic>. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the isolation and characterization of fungal endophytes from <italic>Z. multiflora</italic> as well as their antifungal effect on <italic>M. cannonballus</italic>.</p></abstract>
