<abstract xml:lang="en" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>The study involved seedlings of <italic>Cichorium intybus</italic> var. <italic>sativum</italic> cv. ‘Polanowicka’ and fungi (<italic>Alternaria alternata, Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium culmorum, Fusarium oxysporum, Pythium irregulare, Rhizoctonia solani</italic> and <italic>Sclerotinia sclerotiorum</italic>) colonizing the soil environment in the field cultivation of that plant. Pathogenicity tests carried out in a phytotron showed that pre-emergence damping-off of chicory seeds, and thus no germination, was caused mainly by <italic>S. sclerotiorum, P. irregulare</italic> and <italic>A. alternata.</italic> The most harmful for the seedlings of root chicory proved to be <italic>P. irregulare, A. alternata, R. solani</italic> and <italic>F. oxysporum</italic>, while the least harmful were <italic>B. cinerea</italic> and <italic>F. culmorum.</italic> The growth of the affected plants was arrested and well-defined necrotic lesions appeared on their roots.</p></abstract>
