Objective

Analysis of the incidence of urolithiasis in men who drink alcohol excessively, along with the determination of a dependency between the location of calculi and the necessity of their treatment. Methods: Study of 118 men treated in urology clinics in the Greater Poland Province consuming min. 6 units of alcohol/day. All patients were subjected to an ultrasound examination and, in case of the need for treatment or further diagnostics, a CT scan of the abdomen. Qualification for treatment was based on the 2021 guidelines of the European Association of Urology.

Results

Urolithiasis was diagnosed in 63.56% of the patients. 25.33% of the cases required treatment. The predominant age group requiring treatment was men over 65 years of age. A CT scan of the abdomen was performed in 63.16% of the patients with a diagnosis of lithiasis requiring treatment. The most common location of calculi in the urinary tract was the median calyx group (27.11%). The rarest location of calculi was the lower ureter (1.69%).

Conclusions

Men who abused alcohol had a higher risk of developing urolithiasis compared with the population risk. Given the beneficial effects of environmental factors such as lifestyle changes including alcohol abstinence, physicians should educate patients about harmful daily habits.
