<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>This paper is the third part of our bird ringing data analysis series (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="j_orhu-2017-0020_ref_007_w2aab3b7c10b1b6b1ab1ab7Aa">Harnos <italic>et al.</italic> 2015a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="j_orhu-2017-0020_ref_006_w2aab3b7c10b1b6b1ab1ab6Aa">2016a</xref>) in which we continue to focus on exploring data using the R statistical environment. Here, we give a short description of missing data patterns, then handling and visualization techniques that help simultaneously explore the data and the structure of missing values. We try to emphasize that missing data can seriously distort the results of the analyses, therefore the conclusions drawn.</p></abstract>
