<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">Increasing rates of body weight of children has become a motivation for investigating active transportation to school during the past years. Lack of proper data covering different geographical contexts is a problem seen in the literature of this subject. The present paper reports the findings of a recent survey on nine cities in seven European countries funded by the European Commission. The objective of the survey was to provide data covering several topics in relation with active commuting to school and body mass index, such as parental perceptions of safety and security, neighborhood facilities, land use characteristics, etc. in different regions of Europe in a way that cross-sectional comparisons between regions and city sizes is facilitated. For that, 2735 children/parents were handed out questionnaires, from whom 1424 filled out the questionnaires (response rate: 52%). This led to 1304 validated questionnaires. The respondents studied in 21 elementary schools of Foggia, Italy; Berlin, Germany; Thessaloniki, Greece; Rijeka, Croatia; Utrecht, The Netherlands; Łódź, Poland; Konstantynow, Poland; Malatya, Turkey, and Doğanşehir, Turkey as of March 2016 until January 2017. The survey instrument enables development of continuous and categorical variables for empirical research with strong focus on the built environment using the aggregate data provided by this study. It is expected that the output data eases production of knowledge about less-studied European contexts as well as cross-sectional comparison of results with more studied areas of Western Europe.</abstract>

Patterns of children’s travel to school, their body weight, spatial factors, and perceptions: A survey on nine European cities

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">Location decision-making constitutes one of pivotal tasks for banking managements, which applies to both banking headquarters and affiliates. The main objective of this article consists in analysis and interpretation of location factors that stay behind location-decision making of banking managements and subsequent collocation of banking head offices in the Czech Republic. In doing so, cluster analysis was utilised appropriately and it turned out, initial 18 location factors can be decreased to final three mutually similar groups, which satisfactorily embody location criteria banking managements take into account. As it has been proven banking landscape in the Czech Republic is still influenced by traditional hard factors of location, nonetheless their soft counterparts should be increasingly considered.</abstract>

Managerial decision-making on the location of banking headquarters in the Czech Republic

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">Observing the structure of employment and its trends constitute the fundamental baseline to assess the successes and failures of both national and EU social and economic policies in terms of evaluating effectiveness of support to regions framed by both competitiveness and cohesion issues. The study presents the assessment of structural changes of employment in the system of traditional three economic sectors using the measure of structures dissimilarity along with its decomposition and trends. The Czech NUTS 2 level regions were used for the study and the analysed period covered the years 2008−2014. The <italic>U</italic> measure of changes in structure of components was applied on data on employment (NACE classification). The results confirmed the current trends of (i) tertiarization in old industrial regions; (ii) the increasing share of employment in the industrial sector shown by some rural regions, and (iii) the growing fragmentation of the spatial pattern of socio-economic development.</abstract>

Decomposition of changes in structure and trends in employment in Czechia at NUTS 2 level

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">Quarrying represents a major human impact on the landscape. The positive effects of quarrying have also been appreciated over the last several decades and concern the role of quarries as sites with the potential for geoscientific education and geotourism. In this paper we present a procedure for establishing a multitemporal database of abandoned quarries and their multicriterial assessment in order to determine sites suitable for geotourism purposes. The case of the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area in Northern Czechia is used, as an example of conflicting interest between nature conservation and intense quarrying. Using the combination of old maps and current orthophotomaps, we identified 80 (mid-19th Century), 57 (mid-20th Century) and 38 (2007) quarries. 104 of them were further evaluated according to criteria of scientific and educational value and ‘potential use’ value (visibility, accessibility and extent). This process enabled to determine sites with the highest suitability for geotourism purposes. Finally, we discuss management context for these sites, and possible threats to the sites caused by increased geotourism.</abstract>

Assessing the geotourism potential of abandoned quarries with multitemporal data (České Středohoří Mts., Czechia)

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">The Lake Chad basin is one of the most unstable regions in Africa. The lake itself has shrunk and nowadays it covers less than 10 % of its area in 1960. These environmental changes have wider geopolitical consequences in the whole region, which encompasses countries such as Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon. Therefore, it seems that environmental threats may act as the detonators for larger political conflict as well as for a struggle for land and may cause growing instability in affected countries. The region is fragile, owing to the fact that several terrorist and Islamist groups are operating there. The most serious threat in the Lake Chad basin is militant Islamist group Boko Haram, which is based in north eastern Nigeria, but it is also active in neighbouring countries. As a result of both ecological changes and security threats, people are losing their traditional sources of income from herding and it is likely that there will be large waves of migration from the area. The paper focuses on the environmental challenges in the Lake Chad basin and their effect on the security in the region. The main attention will be paid to the strategies and actions of militant terrorist groups such as Boko Haram that will be analysed in the wider regional geopolitical context.</abstract>

GeoScape

The journal was established in 2006 strictly following the Open-Access policy. Its editorial board makes its best to protect the journal’s status as a non-profit publication platform free of any APC (Article Processing Charge). It is also for this reason that the journal is published only in electronic form. Volumes preceding 2014 can be found at lsru.geography.ujep.cz/research.html  The journal focuses on landscape and territorial research in its broadest meaning. It addresses the territorial organization of society and environment from the perspective of various hierarchic levels, functional and developmental dimensions, and their mutual relations. The aim of the journal is to establish a common platform for the publication of research on ecological and environmental issues, social dimension of sustainability, economic geography and regional development, cross-border cooperation and political strategies influencing the landscape, spatial planning, regional development, and policies at different scales. The interdisciplinarity is strongly encouraged.  In all its content the journal accentuates the practical implications of the research for public administration, planning, and regional development. Therefore, ideally, the papers discuss the relevance of the methodical procedures and of the results for the respective fields.  Submission and peer-review process  The journal welcomes papers that suite one of the following categories: original papers, research reports and discussion papers (see author guidelines for details). The journal also publishes Special Issues or papers grouped around particular themes (Thematic papers). The publication of Special and Thematic Issues is subject to approval of the editorial board based on evaluation procedure of the submitted proposals.
