<p>A total of 181 cultivable endophytic bacterial isolates were collected from stems of 13 species of herbs inhabiting Europe (Poland): <italic>Chelido- nium majus</italic> L., <italic>Elymus repens</italic> L., <italic>Erigeron annuus</italic> L., <italic>Euphrasia rostkoviana</italic> Hayne, <italic>Foeniculum vulgare</italic> L., <italic>Geranium pratense</italic> L., <italic>Humulus lupulus</italic> L., <italic>Matricaria chamomilla</italic> L., <italic>Mentha arvensis</italic> L., <italic>Papaver rhoeas</italic> L., <italic>Rosmarinus officinalis</italic> L., <italic>Solidago gigantea</italic> L. and <italic>Vinca minor</italic> L. The isolates were screened for their antifungal activity and fifty three were found to inhibit fungal growth. Of these, five had strong antifungal properties. These selected isolates were identified as: <italic>Pseudomonas azotoformans</italic>, <italic>P. cedrina</italic>, <italic>Bacillus subtilis</italic> group and <italic>Erwinia persicina</italic>.
