The coalition agreement of the current German government coalition envisages 400,000 newly built dwellings per year. For the time being, this target will be missed by a wide margin, despite the (re)establishment of the Ministry of Construction. In the meantime, the tide in the construction sector seems to be turning: The previously observed overcapacity is no longer the most pressing problem, but rather the turnaround in interest rates and rising costs are causing a noticeable slowdown. Basically, the question remains unanswered as to whether the efforts made so far to provide housing at affordable prices for all are sufficient or whether further measures are necessary.
